Grier signs with Sabres

This thread is unintentionally hilarious.

I also heard in his spare time that Mike Grier is dropped into Afghanistan to take out nests of Taliban -- just by glaring at them.

I was referring to X Benedict's comment about holding leads. I'm excited about the signing, but like Ink says, it's not Jerome Iginla.

Yikes! Afinogenov #1? I'm not sure he even meant to put it into the net. That Sanderson goal was garbage goal time. What about Pominville? Drury? It seemed like it was the list of best stick handling before a goal. Speaking of stick handling, watching Stafford and Connolly just weave in and out of entire teams really makes me yearn for those two to carry more of the load this year.

Two categories are needed. Best Goals. Biggest Goals. Only a few bridge the gap. May Day is one, it's safe to say.

Same with Moments. There are Greatest Moments and Most Memorable Moments. I'd say Campbell's hit on Umberger was one of the most memorable moments in franchise history, but hardly one of the greatest. Grosek's OT goal to eliminate the Flyers is one of the Greatest Moments, but seems to have been forgotten. Weird.

great post, great perspective --- yeah, reading it again, just spot f'ing on.

despite its poor resolution quality, and the absence of grosek's goal, this offering had me going ... until it got to #1.

That goal was a culmination of his career. I don't think he knew he scored until the red light came on.

Drury's goal gives me goosebumps every time. Then a tear of happiness. The crowd, the noise level, the jumping around. I was screaming as loud as I could after that goal and I couldn't even hear myself.

Wow!!! I saw this on the WGR page, too. Link for that: http://www.wgr550.com/Grier-Back-in-Buffalo/4976980

Absolutely great signing by Darcy. This is a signing I can really get excited about for Buffalo this offseason. Not great, but I like it, that's for sure.

It's great and it's not great?

Excited about?

It seems you are confused. Grier was decent in 2005-2006. I watched all his games last year in SJ and he is losing it. Very slow and typically never even noticed.

This is NOT an exciting signing. Darcy is signing fringe players who won't make a difference.

The team needs at minimum a top 4 defenseman (like Dennis Seidenberg) or a top 6 forward who can play on the top 2 lines. The team is full of bottom 6 forwards.

This news is a big YAWN!

I know this one @ 3:43 hardened both my nipples:

One of the greatest games and some of the best Sabre goals I've ever seen.

Grier gets the opener, assists on another and finishes his night off with the pass to Captain Clutch for the game.

The Skill and Roy were something else in this game as well.

The penultimate example of this team's resiliency over the course of the 05-06 season.

I think 10 goals 147 hits in 62 games 38 blocked shots +8 is a decent player to add even when not noticed.

only 25 PIM.

(although I've long suspected that the SJ scorer is pretty liberal with hits)

Grier's smart and he's going to make you play your ass off to beat him.

Well DR must have showed him he was committed to winning 1.2 mil

I wonder if Vaclav Varada is available.

I think he is doing the geico commercials now.

And X I don't think thats a bad deal at all. It makes you wonder what DR has up his sleeve.

Are you reading my post in context? We're being told by a certain few here that this is a near-worthless signing that is not worth the reaction it has received.

It's not worth the reaction it has received. That's why it's funny. We ARE morons for thinking this is as awesome as it is. We should not be as excited about this as we are, but we're so desperate for good news that this is like giving a homeless man Carlo Rossi instead of Thunderbird.

It's really not and I'm guessing 5 games into the season, a certain few of the biggest Grier cheerleaders will become his biggest critics.

Good signing.

Grier is not a Top 6 forward as the team may need- but that is all I'm going to give to the critics of this signing.

Perhaps the biggest (no pun intended) slight on these Sabres is that they are 1.) too small and 2.) too soft.

Grier fixes both of these issues.

As do the signings of McCormick, Montador, and all of this years draft picks.

I think (finally) losing that goof Peters is a great thing. Spreading out toughness to all areas of the team (which Grier does) is really a great approach.

Now, if they would only bring back JP DuMont...

Hey, at least we've moved up from fourth-line signings to third-line ones.

His points on the Power Play would be worth it alone. Doesn't matter what team he's on, I always try to pick him up during fantasy hockey. The guy is an assist maker and at his age had almost as good a season as Pomminstein, who, despite being terrible, still managed 66 points. J.P. had 65 points, and 22 on the power play. Pominville had 24. I'd throw a lot of stuff Nashville's way to get Dumont back. The guy was good.

Good post. As far as the FO getting a clue about being too soft/small, I think we'll wait and see if another move is made to confirm this. Funny how much Grier's signing can give us that bit of hope.

As far as Jean Pierre Dumont goes... I know you're kidding but... I was saying the whole 06-07 season that losing JP is much more of a burden than everyone thought. He's been decent for the Preds since. Making 4mil the next three years...I'd rather take Staff at whatever he'll make. Just my two cents.

Dumont is a proven producer. Stafford isn't. Would I take Stafford at 2mil per? Yes. Would I take J.P. over Drew if Drew wanted any more than 2mil? Oh hell yes. If this team wanted to make the playoffs this year, swapping Stafford for J.P. would certainly be a productive decision, especially for crucial power plays.
