Grier signs with Sabres

I'm very suprised by this. Does this mean the Sabres are doing what it takes to win according to Grier?

Buuuuurrrrrrn.

I don't know how I feel. I am torturing myself by watching the new episodes of "Who Wants..." with Regis, one of my favorite shows back in the day. I wish Regis hadn't come back. It's not the same. A lot of people said bringing back Jay McKee would be a mistake. I guess I just don't know enough about Grier the player today.

At least there's a pulse down there.

hmmm, he must feel that DR is committed to winning. I'll buy it.

I think it's boosted by some of the things this signing implies, as in impending trades. It's a good signing of a physical forward with top line talent, and it should theoretically mean more action is coming. That promise alone is good enough for me.

Let me start by saying that it'll be great to Mike back; definitely the type of attitude that this team needs.

That said, my one concern is this: everyone here is penciling him in on the third line and talking about how this means a trade is eminent, but as of right now, he is our second-line RW and gives us 13 forwards. Currently, no trade is necessary. If we re-sign Stafford or another top-line RW, then I will hold my breath for an "impending trade." Until then, it just means that we will have two third-liners in our top six, MacArthur or Hecht on the left wing and Grier on the right wing.

Of course, as I say that, I start to think about a Vanek-Connolly-Grier line. Hmmm ...

Side note: props to kamikaze63_99 over at LGS, who posted this last night at 8pm:

Off topic:

The Sabres have signed a gritty winger to dig into the corners and bring some serious leadership to the mix. The contract was negotiated last week - I have no terms.

I cannot reveal who it is, however. My source has forbidden me to do so. Safe to say you will be "surprised" - I think most of us will be quite happy.

That being said: I know something you don't know LOL

Add him to your list of people who are "in the know."

You know, this was the first thing I thought, too. I like him as a player, always have, and he is what they need. But I have to admit I am a little annoyed (bad choice of words, but it's the closest I can come right now) he was SO vocal about the "commitment to winning" stuff and fed the reputation that it was a bad organ-eye-zation to play for ... and now he comes back ... why exactly? I am curious. Not trying to rip the guy ... yet ... just very interested what he will say. Because everyone else on the planet seems to think nothing has changed ... so does he know something we don't (it's possible) or is he just going to the team that offered the most money? It's not exactly a players' market out there for guys like him.

I'll disagree a little with this. This wasn't a Havlat-Blackhawks situation. Grier didn't go on TV and blast the team to anyone who would listen. He made one remark in passing, one time, to one reporter. It happened in the heat of the moment, after he was treated in a somewhat offhanded manner by the Sabres. So, yes, he did make a negative comment about the team, and the same thing occurred to me when the Sabres signed him, but I also don't think it's fair to say he was "SO vocal."

I like the signing, and I too am psyched because I think a trade is in the hopper. But Grier isn't a top line player. He played 15 min. per game last year, much less in the playoffs, and missed 20 games in March with a knee injury. Realistically he's a 3rd-liner.

Not to mention veteran leadership and accountability in the locker room.

There we go. Good call.

Now, as to the trade situation -- here's what the forwards look like:

Connolly-Vanek-Pommer

Roy-Stafford-MacArthur

Gaustad-Grier-Hecht

Mair-Paille-Kaleta

Extra: McCormick, Ellis, Kennedy, Gerbe

I think we can assume they aren't bringing in Dominic Moore.

I don't think they want to trade Stafford, but with every day that goes by, I'll be less surprised if they do -- although I'd expect him to be accompanied by Hecht or Tallinder -- ie part of the price for anyone trading for Stafford is taking one of our bad contracts. I want to keep Stafford, but if we got a real top 6 forward (like Horton, but I highly doubt that will happen -- he's too good, at too low of a price, for Florida to trade him) back in the deal, I'd be fine with it.

If Florida is actually in the equation here, they may be interested in the forgotten forward, Mancari. I'm sure they've seen quite a bit of him over the years.

You can put those lines together any number of ways. I like:

Vanek-Connolly-Stafford

MacArthur-Roy-Pommer

Paille-Gaustad-Grier

McCormick-Mair-Kaleta

Extras: Ellis, Kennedy maybe Moore.

Yes I know Hecht and Gerbe aren't on the list. This is a list I like made with what they have and what they CAN (somehow) throw away.

I can see MacArthur and Paille being swapped around - that left side is weak, though. That's where we need attention. And the more I go over lines, the more I think we can't lose Stafford unless we get someone better for that line in return.

his leadership and accountability are definite pluses, and should help spread maturity in the lockerroom

however, his real offensive contribution i doubt will be enough to crack the top two lines. i still like the idea of him and Goose on a line together

definitely sounds like some sort of trade is in the offing, once again Darcy and LQ are teasing us with promises of change to come

Grier is getting long in the tooth, but I really like the intangibles he'll bring to the dressing room. In my (reality checked) optimal scenario, they do bring back Moore. If they do that, assuming they don't get rid of Hecht, then the lines could look like this

Vanek-Connolly-Stafford

Roy-Moore-Pominville

Hecht-Gaustad-Grier

Paille-Mair-Kaleta

spares MacArthur & McCormick. You'd have a couple of reasonable scoring lines, a true shut down 3rd line (they might not score 30 goals all year, but the opponents' top line won't score much more than that), and a reasonable "energy" line. Swapping out Stafford for Horton, and I am reasonably pleased with those lines.

I'm still very concerned about the D.

Haven't seen Horton play outside of the few times he's played against Buffalo, but (and feel free to call me Darcy Regier) I believe we could get better return for Stafford, especially if packaged with Hecht or even MacArthur.

Horton has scored 28, 31, 27 & 22 the last 4 years compared to Stafford's 13, 16 & 20 the last 3. Horton is a year older and twice the physical presence Stafford is at 229 pounds.

I'd pull the trigger on this without blinking.

+1

I'm sure this wouldn't be a straight up trade, but given some of the "other" guys mentioned who DR would pair up with Stafford to get Horton, it would STILL be a steal. That said, I find it hard to believe Florida would give him up....

I just can't see your lineup being what we wind up with since they gave that one-way contract to Ellis. Unless McCormick's on a two-way deal...

Yeah, after I posted I realized I didn't have Ellis on there. I guess there isn't room for Moore w/out some moves being made.

You know, you are right. My annoyance is not really with Grier ... it's not his fault one remark was repeated over and over in column after column as evidence of how screwed up the front office is ... a legit piece of evidence, but still ... it was one remark by one guy.

And really, was any issue made out of that quote in the first year or two that he was gone? It seems like that just started to pop up last year.
