spndnchz Posted August 6, 2009 Report Posted August 6, 2009 Thought it might be "fun", with some younger posters or out of towners etc that are looking for some history of the Buffalo Sabres seasons. So post up 1) the season u refer to 2) what happened (or didn't) to the team or to yourself (hockey related) 3) lets try to keep it chronological and start with Season 1. 4) Once we run out of stuff to say on that season, someone can post the next season is starting. So, 1970-1971 Sabres are one of two expansion teams added to bring the league to 14 teams,

Once the day for a year has passed, then no more comments for that year? I like the idea, but I think we should layout the rules a little more.
spndnchz Posted August 6, 2009 Author Report Posted August 6, 2009 ok, so are you thinking one long thread? 30 separate threads? Once the day for a year has passed, then no more comments for that year? I like the idea, but I think we should layout the rules a little more. I figured to waste some time before the season starts. First pre-season is Sept 17th. So we have about 40 days. Each season (in one possibly long thread) would be about a day or so of postings. Like, today and tomorrow 1970-71, then Sat, sun 1971-72 and so on. You older guys must have stories of the Aud, players, what the surroundings were like in those years. If you want to post something for 1982 right away You'll have to wait! lol
spndnchz Posted August 6, 2009 Author Report Posted August 6, 2009 Let's say that if a 3 poster majority want to move on to the next season they can call 'Season ends at midnight" and then move on to the next year. Who ever starts the next year has to include the first regular season opponent in their post. like "October 10, 1970 Sabres vs. Pittsburgh Penguins"
nobody Posted August 6, 2009 Report Posted August 6, 2009 You'll be able to skip the 80's so that will give you more time for the other years.
spndnchz Posted August 6, 2009 Author Report Posted August 6, 2009 70-71 Sabres spin the wheel to get the number one overall pick : Gilbert Perreault.
carpandean Posted August 6, 2009 Report Posted August 6, 2009 Team name was chosen in a contest, with the Sabres being selected because sabres are a symbol of leadership and both strong offense and defense.
SDS Posted August 6, 2009 Report Posted August 6, 2009 So, back to the 1970-71 season... I just turned 1 year old and PA was just starting to look at retirement homes... Perreault was the 1st pick and led the team in scoring. Tom Webster was the 1st pick in the expansion draft - he was taken from the Bruins. We win the 1st game, but start the season 2-12... I do know that every time the Sabres score - I was probably peeing in my diaper, but that may have been a coincidence.

Why not give everyone a day or so to think about it and iron out the format (I like a separate thread for each season that will later be archived)? This could go alongside This Day in Sabres History in the site's history section.
Calvin Posted August 7, 2009 Report Posted August 7, 2009 excellent idea spndnchz! this is going to be great, i love reading about Sabres history
mphs mike Posted August 7, 2009 Report Posted August 7, 2009 excellent idea spndnchz! this is going to be great, i love reading about Sabres history  April 1971 - I attend my first Sabres game with my Cub Scout group. The Sabres are playing the Blues and, in the 3d period, Bert scores, breaking the record for most goals by a rookie. He ends the season with 38, a record which will last one year. Maybe when we move on to 71-72 we'll find out who breaks it!
Eric in Akron Posted August 7, 2009 Report Posted August 7, 2009 I was born in the same year as our beloved Sabres. The Sabres started out with a surprise as Punch Imlach, who was expected to go to the new Canucks expansion, became Buffalo's first head coach. Punch was fired from the Leafs and he became a part of a partnership group with the Canucks organization. The partnership group was inline to become the ownership group for the Canucks, but the group fell short financially. After Medicor bought the Canucks, Punch was offered a job with the Canucks but chose the coaching spot with the Sabres. In a side note - Joe Crozier (Sabres 3rd HC) was also part of the partnership with Punch that was inline to buy the Canucks. Eric
spndnchz Posted August 7, 2009 Author Report Posted August 7, 2009 http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jlOPr-VvFZ4 Sabres would finish 5th in the Eastern Division with a 24-39-15 record. No playoffs.
Stoner Posted August 7, 2009 Report Posted August 7, 2009 In November of that first season, coach and GM Punch Imlach returned to Maple Leaf Gardens in Toronto and saw his Sabres hammer his old team 7-2! Imlach got a standing ovation from the crowd. Imlach had led the Leafs to four Cups in the 1960s before the Knoxes brought him to Buffalo in a briliant PR and hockey move.
spndnchz Posted August 7, 2009 Author Report Posted August 7, 2009 1970-71 Roster click to make big. FWIW, Eddie Shack has his jersey online for sale.
mphs mike Posted August 7, 2009 Report Posted August 7, 2009 1970-71 Roster click to make big. FWIW, Eddie Shack has his jersey online for sale. Looking at the roster reminded me that Joe Daley was the only Sabres goalie to play without a mask.
spndnchz Posted August 7, 2009 Author Report Posted August 7, 2009 Gilbert was paid $3,194,694 for his first season as a Sabre. He was also a (+/-) -39 that season. Correct me if I'm wrong but, $165,000 was the league minimum at the time.
spndnchz Posted August 7, 2009 Author Report Posted August 7, 2009 1970-1971 Season ends tonight with a game against Philadelphia April 4, 1971. 3-3 tie.
SDS Posted August 7, 2009 Report Posted August 7, 2009 click to make big. that's what he said?

spndnchz Posted August 7, 2009 Author Report Posted August 7, 2009 I think that's what he would be worth in today's dollars based on his stats for that year. (from What if sports) Someone find the number before the season ends tonight!

(from What if sports) Someone find the number before the season ends tonight! I'm trying to remember the year Perreault held out. Maybe around 75 or 76. I think he finally got something like 100 grand, and people were shocked. I'd love to know if my memory is SMC. Where would you research such a thing online?
carpandean Posted August 7, 2009 Report Posted August 7, 2009 According to this article, Gilbert made $375k in the 1984-85 season, the 10th highest in the NHL (Gretzky was top at $875k.) Doesn't answer the question completely, but puts an upper bound on it.
Mbossy Posted August 8, 2009 Report Posted August 8, 2009 Sabres open the season on Sun,Oct 10, 1971 with a 2-1 win over the Pittsburgh Penguins.
