Hot topic icons?

Ok, I'm re-doing dome of the topic icons that you see along the left hand side. Does anyone really use the color of the those icons to determine if it is a "hot topic"... meaning that there are more than 10 replies. You can already see the number of replies in the column.

I have only used those icons for three things:

1. see unread topics

2. see that I have already read that topic (same as #1 really...)

3. see topics I have posted in (displays a white dot or in this case a little paper thingy)

So, I ask the question - do we need "hot topic" icons or can we just let them be the same as the other topics?

right now, I changed them from that ugly orangish color to blue with a read background. The question is if they should just be blue with a yellow background like all the other threads.

IMO save the real estate for something else. Thet are not that readable w/o high resolution, the differences are not that inutitive and as you said redundant based on the numbers and the rankinG(ASSUMING TOP TO B RANKING IS STILL THE MOST RECENT REPLIED)

well, I'm not going to change the template - I'm just changing the color of the icons and stuff like that. If you do a hard F5 reload - you'll see the new icons.

The key to the icons are in the legend at the bottom of the topic list view page. I think I found something I can live with.

As chz said, I want to see the new posts, hot or not, I don't care.

Try to avoid re-reading posts and see the 'new' stuff.

Some thread with 5 posts are hot, while others with 50 might be sh!t.

Scott, can the threshold for replies be increased? Almost every thread has more than 10 replies. "Hot topic" has been watered down to mean almost nothing. What if it were 25 or even 50 replies? (Nutty idea -- what if in even higher cases, say 100 replies, the thread becomes pinned as a Classic Conversation? You mentioned with the Complaint thread that sometimes a thread becomes a "feature" of its own.)

Actually I'm not in favor of a hot topic icon at all, but if it's going to be there, I wish it had more meaning.

how does 50 sound then...

I'm not sure changing the number retroactively changes the current threads, but it will be 50 going forward unless someone else has a better number.
