Officially the Dog Days of Hockey?

Dog days of sports, really. We have the whisper of Bills training camp, but ultimately, there's nothing doing except mid-season baseball until September.

Aug. 9th Hall of fame game, other than that, not much doin for sports. Been watching the golf channel too much recently.

I hate summer...

I don't literally hate it, but the season between glorious spring and gorgeous autumn has always felt very dull to me. Mainly July and August.

Sure feels like it.

Discuss. I'll be scraping the moss of the lawn chairs.

I sure there is a lot to talk about in those other NHL cities whose teams decided to try and improve.

not an attack DeLuca but do you type this stuff to get a rise or just to keep beating on the drum?

I don't neccessarily disagree with you but unless large crowds descend on HSBC with torches there is little that we as the common everyday fan can do. Other than not buying merchandise or tickets. Ultimatly this will be purchased by another fan until thy put a horrible product on the ice. As long as a fanbase supports mediocrity there will not be FO change. "If it ain't broke don't fix it." The players may develop and they may not.

What else is there to talk about? There are threads about mail boxes and lawn mowing. The only story around the Sabres is their inability to, or their unwillingness to, make any moves to improve a 10th place team. You can call it "beating a drum" if you like. If that drum beat can keep me from being afflicted by the same apathy that has come over this franchise and a great number of fans I am going to keep the drum going.

It's shocking that fans are not more upset and voicing their displeasure considering the continued support this franchise receives and frankly doesn't deserve. It's appalling that this franchise refuses do the things needed to get this team into the playoffs. While fans continue to purchase season tickets in large numbers all they are rewarded with is mediocre hockey and a bunch of lame excuses.

Some of us have some patience and realize that they have until October to improve the team.

I am fascinated to find out what move you think the Sabres are going to make between now and October? What do the Sabres have to offer to a trading partner? Vanek? Roy? Not Pominville at his price tag. Their not cashing Tallinder in for a difference maker.

The Bruins just signed Derek Morris. He makes a good team better. I'm not saying the Sabres should have gotten Morris specifically. Another team in the Conference just got a little better. And just like the Sabres are expecting their young players to play better this season so is every other team in the Conference. The Sabres are expecting their players to improve while every other team stays exactly the same. That's not patience that's just stupidity.

I'm pretty confident that the Sabres aren't going to make any moves the remainder of the off-season, but frankly it's just annoying to me listening to people constantly b*tch and moan about the same thing over and over. Yeah, the front office sucks and the Sabres probably won't do any better than they did the last few years (though a healthy connolly vanek and Miller does mean playoffs imo). but do you really expect people to stop going to games? I don't care if the Sabres finished in last place every year, I'm still going to attend as many games as I can and watch the rest on TV. It's not like there's a better team to follow around here.

So what you're saying is, "no playoffs next year", then?

While I love baseball, it's definitely a monotonous time of year for sports. Baseball is all we have from mid-June to September. Then the NFL gets started and baseball pennant races heat up. But for now, it's relatively boring.

Nice piece, good reading and interesting debate...... does anyone have the xmradio option they describe, sounds like all hockey all the the time... I guess only for the ..... wait for it......... Rabid fan.... WOOF.

Spend a night listening to those radio calls from different NHL cities, and it's entrancing. You hear fresh perspectives on the game, mixed with unabashed homerism. You hear interviews between periods with visiting beat writers and ex-jocks that can be fascinating. You hear hockey, rather than see it, opening up the Game to the mind's eye in a captivating way.

I have the XM hockey station. Its sweet. They have all the broadcasts from around the league. They also have hockey talk not sure who deos it though. It is interesting to listen to all the different calls from around the league. Including the out west games that you normally would never hear. It makes the long trips that much better because you can listen to your game where ever you go.

When did I say people should stop going to games?

If this was a vote, I'd say Dog Days of Sports in general.

However, it doesn't last too long.

Because before we know it, Pre-season NFL Football will start!!! haha Rather pre-season NFL football will be over!! YES!

The first notable events we have to look forward to is the August start of College football. In some ways college football is much better than the NFL. By this time Pre-season football is almost wrapping it up and football season is right around the corner. Maybe, just maybe by then the Sabres will have made "a deal" that will have us talking about a potential winning season or maybe Steve Motador remains the lone move the Sabres give to their fans who renewed their seasons because in the grande scheme of things they don't care about us just the money they pry from our wallets. When 95% renew they get a good laugh and a piggy bank full of credit card transactions. They couldn't be happier! While we couldn't be more desperate for a champion!! Oh the dog day of sports is upon us for sure. But soon enough we'll be given more to talk about, or is it we'll be given less to talk about which in turn gives us more to complain about while we continue to shell out more money for a non champion-esqe product....

The more I type the more I can't wait for events such as the Fair and lawn fetes to take my mind off of the Dog days because when there is no news, the teams(Sabres in particular) aren't getting better and if they aren't getting better we already know where they stand, as good (or bad) as last year.

Good Riddance Dog days.

look, hater: darcy and quinn are hard at work evaluating, reevealuating and RE-reevaluating every aspect of this organization. you expect them to hold press conferences every day of the summer to give away their secrets?

you just wait till the RE-reevaluation is over and all the players improve on their own in the off-season. then you'll have something to talk about. we're a solid contender for 9th in the conference.

I'm not going to speculate what moves are going to be made...I'll leave that to Eklund; however, I will share your concern if this is the roster that we take to training camp.

???

I think she means she's worn out with rehashing the same old discussions. This has been a long summer on this board. I'm burned out too; I need hockey.
