billsrcursed Posted July 24, 2009 Report Posted July 24, 2009 Looks like Afinogenov is going to the KHL....Link- http://sports.yahoo.com/nhl/blog/puck_dadd...?urn=nhl,178394 I'm just a little shocked no NHL teams are interested. Granted, the guy's a head case, but you can't deny his speed, he does have some playoff experience, and the way some of these rosters look as of right now, he would probably be an upgrade to someone's 3rd line.... you would think some ego-maniac GM would take a chance and convince himself he has the coach that will be able to "fix" Max's on-ice issues.... maybe he's asking for too much???

I'm going to assume there was probably slight interest from teams but for his sake he'll probably make way more money there than here.
Kristian Posted July 24, 2009 Report Posted July 24, 2009 I'm going to assume there was probably slight interest from teams but for his sake he'll probably make way more money there than here. I would agree with that, which is yet another reason Darcy should've just unloaded him for a 5th rounder last July. For a "penny pinching" team, we sure do a nice job of throwing millions at players who either play like complete garbage, or don't play at all. I like Connolly as much as next guy when he actually plays, but I just can't believe anyone other than Darcy thought Max had any trade value whatsoever, and surely enough we ended up stuck with an extra 3 mill. in payroll, and a completely useless player for 08/09. Oh well, yet another chapter written and closed in the farce better known as "The Sabres Front Office".

The link implies that he would rather play in the states, so you have to wonder just how much of an issue the money would be. Sure, everybody's got a price (thank you Ted DiBiase), but just how much of a difference in salary it would take, who knows.

Two or less Posted July 24, 2009 Report Posted July 24, 2009 Really? Who offered the 5th rounder. Be specific and provide a source. I have no idea what was offered (if anything) but check out this interview from Max..... Russian link- http://www.championat.ru/hockey/article-36417.html Translation link- http://translate.google.ru/translate?prev=...history_state0= I asked for a trade. And they didn't want to trade me at all, and didn't let me play. As a result, neither I helped them nor they got something for me. Everyone lost. But now I'm a free [agent], can choose where to play. I heard, there were trades settled to a lot of places. But. Team owner [Tom Golisano] once came and told me: whatever you want, but I won't trade you anywhere, that's it... - Why? - He told me: I like you (smiling). Whatever coach is doing with you, I don't care. That's it. Enjoy it or not. He pretty much says Darcy had him traded but Golisano rejected it....
wonderbread Posted July 24, 2009 Report Posted July 24, 2009 He pretty much says Darcy had him traded but Golisano rejected it.... he also said this...WTF? "But I have some glasses managed to gain, slaughter even." Looks like Tom has a good vision program in place for the players.

Guest Sloth Posted July 24, 2009 Report Posted July 24, 2009 The reason Max played with those guys is because he was even more clueless with the puck than his linemates. I saw him play for Team Russia at several world cups, and time and time again you'd see Max do one of his patented end to end rushes only to lose the puck, and once the whistle blew you'd see guys like OV and Kovalchuck standing on the bench with the exact same WTF look on their faces we've come to know so well from our own bench. I don't think we can argue the quality of his linemates when playing for his country, and yet he still sucks. Max is clueless - He plays his own game 95% of the time, he has no on-ice awareness whatsoever, doesn't know where the opposition or his teammates are, he has no shot and very limited passing skills. His only upside is speed, and above average stickhandling. His downsides? Just about everything else in the game of hockey. I'm probably one of the biggest Ruff questioners on this board, but Ruff had nothing to do with ruining Max's career - This is a guy who's made an entire pro career from one single upside : Being fast. I don't think that qualifies as "ruining" anything, but rather getting more than the most out of next to nothing. We can talk about Max's terrible play as of late, but remember his career looked to be on the a major upswing in the 05/06 season. Max lead the Sabres in points w/ a total of 73, he had a +/- of 6, and he had 31 pp points. I know the argument can be made about the "temporary" rule changes enforced in the 05/06 and 06/07 seasons, but you can't argue w/ the fact Max showed he knew what to do w/ the puck in those seasons. I don't care what rules were being in enforced. If a player does not know where he should be on the ice, and what he should be doing on the ice, he will not put up 73 points, and not have 31 pp points. I know Max became a head case after the 06/07 season, but he did have the right frame of thought for a couple of seasons in his career. I do agree it was time for Max to move on. I'm not trying to say Buffalo should've tried to keep him for the upcoming season.
spndnchz Posted July 24, 2009 Report Posted July 24, 2009 Hard to decipher much from that translation, but I gather: Ruff didn't like him and he knew it. He liked the guys on the team and the fans He's received an offer from a 'select' NHL club, but is waiting for others He'd rather play in NHL than KHL
nobody Posted July 24, 2009 Report Posted July 24, 2009 - The complex relationship with a coach it led to what you have wanted to exchange. Why not come? I asked for an exchange. And they told me just what or did not want to change and are not allowed to play with. As a result, no I did not help them, nor they for me nothing is gained. Neither myself nor the people came out. But now I'm free [agent], I can play where I want. - Actually, is not the first year went to talk about that Afinogenov can change the club ... And where I just did not change - to talk. Just the owner of the [Thomas Golisano] once came up to me and said: how do you want, but I you can not change and all. - Why? She says you are like me (smiles), and that the coach there with you do not have my affairs. Want - Rejoice, you want - no. I take this to say that Golisano went to Max and told him that he and Max are alike; that Lindy does what he wants not what Golisano might want. in other words, Golisano doesn't interfere with hockey decisions (except I'm sure if it alters the budget.) , is not the first year went to talk about that Afinogenov can change the club ... - И куда меня только не меняли - по разговорам. - And where I just did not change - to talk. Просто владелец команды [Томас Голисано] как-то подошёл ко мне и сказал: ты как хочешь, а я тебя никуда не поменяю, и всё. Just the owner of the [Thomas Golisano] once came up to me and said: how do you want, but I you can not change and all.
Kristian Posted July 24, 2009 Report Posted July 24, 2009 Really? Who offered the 5th rounder. Be specific and provide a source. The rumor mill was pretty busy about how there were offers on the table for Max last off-season, but I'll be perfectly honest and admit that I dreamed up the 5th rounder part. However, I'll go out on a limb and bet that the offers Darcy were looking at were of better value than a 5th rounder. Though it appears Tommy G may have been the reason Max wasn't traded, in which case the FO in this particular case may be of no fault. This is news to me, and I'm not sure how it all fits in. All I know is we ended up paying a player who didn't want to be here 3 mill. for doing next to nothing. Don't give a hoot whose fault it may or may not be, all I know is that it's bad business and if you don't see that, then your problems with me are clouding your judgement in ways that can't be healthy. Happy?
red Posted July 24, 2009 Report Posted July 24, 2009 And Tommy G. supposedly stays away from team management... If he has played a role in team management, it'd explain certain moves made by "Darcy." This, and the earlier scoff Golisano is rumored to have made when Regier went to him to request the money it would take to keep Drury with the team. Maybe Golisano moved to Florida to protect his arse from fan reprisal...
red Posted July 24, 2009 Report Posted July 24, 2009 I am sorry if I keep posting references to the NFL here, but does anyone remember the Tampa Bay Buccaneers and their lame duck owner, Hugh Culverhouse? He was an absent-minded miser, and under his watch the Bucs were horrible and the laughing-stock of the league for years. Then he died, ownership changed (finally), and the Bucs were all of a sudden in the playoffs and winning a Super Bowl. I sincerely hope that this is not the case with the Sabres. I sure hope that Golisano is not the NHL version of Culverhouse.

No, no, no...it's all Darcy's fault. He's not being told what to do - he operates all by himself. :wallbash: Leave it to a Max story to confirm that even the man at the very tip-top is fiddling with the team and leaving DR as the fall guy.

I have very little sympathy for Max. I don't disagree that the team rode his stock to the bottom....but by the end of last year his stock was pretty low. They could have waived him....but there was always the chance he would play his way out of things. He had a regular power play shift....... No goals and 7 pts on the PP in 45-50 games. For an offensive wing? How much is that worth on the trade market? You're not getting traded because you are too stupid to realize you are playing stupid. That my take.

Bmwolf21 Posted July 25, 2009 Report Posted July 25, 2009 Not much to say that already hasn't been said. Just someone wake me when it's official and Max has signed a contract elsewhere.
Kristian Posted September 17, 2009 Report Posted September 17, 2009 Max is trying out with Atlanta. Hope they sign him, that should improve our chances of getting points against them this season.
