FogBat Posted July 16, 2009 Report Posted July 16, 2009 Messiah defender? What are you babbling about? Did my username change to Crosschecking and no one told me? :w00t:   At least I didn't start the fire this time... (Now where's that ROTF smiley? I needed it this time.)
FogBat Posted July 16, 2009 Report Posted July 16, 2009 Ok, go ahead and call me out for being wrong on this theory. However, given that Kaleta is from WNY, I think he wanted to stay home. Just my two cents and nothing more.

shrader Posted July 17, 2009 Report Posted July 17, 2009 I'm sure he likes the idea but being a RFA, he had no choice in the matter. Being a RFA with little to no interest from anyone around the league. Even if there was any interest, any team would be crazy to go even above 1 million.
ntsabresfan Posted July 17, 2009 Report Posted July 17, 2009 Glad to see Kaleta signed for another year !!!! Signing his QO shows this is where he wants to be . I think he is a pretty important part of this team . Please stay healthy Pat
darksabre Posted July 17, 2009 Report Posted July 17, 2009 Sorry I figured you were also on two bills drive and the pollitical section under a different moniker as many here are and would understand the Messiah reference to Obama. But it still was a tangent. Eww no. I don't touch TBD with a 30ft pole. I get plenty of Bills talk right here. I use the same sn for everything so I can never be accused of being someone else. Although I probably would have gotten it then. :P btw, my stance on politics and the like is that it should never be discussed on a forum. it just never ends well. Cross board reference = 1 penalty drink. Excellent. :w00t:   At least I didn't start the fire this time... (Now where's that ROTF smiley? I needed it this time.) Glad you liked it. I was hoping you'd catch the lighter side of it. :)

That Aud Smell Posted July 17, 2009 Report Posted July 17, 2009 Stafford is like 6'-2" and 213 poundsKaleta's 6 foot and 200. You must've been wearing ur cowboy boots. if that's what's reported somewhere, i think they're rounding up. my brother and i stood next to kaleta at a carving station (hmmm, beef on weck) at (yet another) fundraiser last september; my brother's a moderately fit guy and stands 5'10" and goes about 180#; kaleta was no taller than my brother and (no surprise) looked leaner and stronger; we put him at ~190#, tops. in point of fact, you know who his build reminds me of? mike peca (is bigger than your peca). kaleta's big enough to play the game he's playing right now -- at a minimum, he just needs to keep his head on a swivel and do it to them before they do it to him. finally, kaleta as 6' and 200# is a little like gerbe being reported as 5'6" and 160#; i'd bet dollars to doughnuts it's more like 5'5" 145#.

inkman Posted July 17, 2009 Report Posted July 17, 2009 As for Kaleta, I was amazed at how small both he and Stafford are. 5'10" and goes about 180#; kaleta was no taller I've see Kaleta in person on more than one occasion. If he is 6' I am 6'9". See above.

That may be what Stafford is listed at, but there is no way he is that tall. I would guestimate 6'1" At the end of the season, I would be surprised if he was over 180, he looked that thin and so did Kaleta. Kaleta may be 5'11", but I had close to three inches on him. Stafford didn't look much taller. P.S. Stafford wears those big grandpa shoulder pads. Makes him look bigger than he is.
inkman Posted July 17, 2009 Report Posted July 17, 2009 Can we all get over the fact that hockey players sizes are inflated? In happens in most sports, probably to give them a bigger than life image. I'm certain the Sabres aren't the only NHL team to do this, so the entire conversation is moot. I've met hockey players and they never seem to measue up to whatever they are listed at. Lets get over it already.
BetweenThePipes00 Posted July 17, 2009 Report Posted July 17, 2009 99% of athletes are not as big as they are "listed." Stafford is PLENTY big enough to play a bit of a physical game when he wants to ... he has shown flashes of digging the puck out of the corner and powering to the net with a guy on his back unlike anyone the Sabres have had since maybe Mike Foligno ... his problem is not his size but that the battle or "jam" as Lindy likes to call it is not there consistently ... Foligno did it every night, Stafford does it once a month ... maybe ... I like the kid but he has to show up every night.

If he could use all his God given talent to hustle half as much as Kaleta he could (and here it is... the cliche) potentially be a star.

It's tough to compare a guy like Kaleta to a guy like Stafford ... Kaleta has had to battle for everything he has ever gotten in his hockey career ... Stafford was successful at every level mostly on talent ... the light needs to come on for guys like that and sometimes it takes a while ... problem is, the Sabres have little margin for error and can't wait very long.

As far as that goes, the sizes of the various agitators I listed above: Tucker -- 5'10", 178, age 34Avery -- 5'9", 185, age 29 Kaleta -- 5'11, 195, age 23 Neil -- 6'1", 209, age 30 are all from ESPN. If the question is whether the guys are in the same weight class, we should probably assume that all of the sizes are exaggerated (thanks, spndchz), so the info is probably still a fair indicator of their weight classes relative to each other. 99% of athletes are not as big as they are "listed." I would just add that the Sabres are probably going to end up giving him a contract in the $7-$8MM range this year, which is not likely to help him realize that he needs to work harder -- ie I can see him seeing the contract as validation of how great he is, etc. I don't mean to say that the Sabres should let him go. The Sabres should absolutely keep him. I just think it's far from a sure thing that he turns into a dependable, consistently productive top 6 winger.

Cause U be smokin' something for a year deal.

nfreeman Posted July 17, 2009 Report Posted July 17, 2009 That's a 3 or 4 year deal? Cause U be smokin' something for a year deal. I was assuming a 3-yr deal. And it's a bit early to be smoking anything, even if it is Friday.
That Aud Smell Posted July 17, 2009 Report Posted July 17, 2009 I was assuming a 3-yr deal. And it's a bit early to be smoking anything, even if it is Friday. while i agree with the risk you identify, i could live with 3 years/$8MM; i'd think he's looking for something more like 3/$9. like malibu stacy said, "math is hard" -- when will stafford be slated for ufa status? i remember that was a big piece of the puzzle with roy at the time we re-signed him -- the team paid a bit of a premium to have some of those ufa years eaten up by the deal.
spndnchz Posted July 17, 2009 Report Posted July 17, 2009 Better than being just as small as everyone else. Do you just date porn stars or something? Size is the last thing I look at in a man, just before I dump him. :w00t:
ntsabresfan Posted July 17, 2009 Report Posted July 17, 2009 as someone already stated, he had no other options. Who stated that ? Do they work for the team ?
