San Diego Sabres Fan Posted July 15, 2009 Report Posted July 15, 2009 Sabres sign Patrick Kaleta today terms not disclosed. Good move, but can they start looking at signing some players that were not on the team last year! Signing a 6th or 7th Defenseman and another that most likley will be in Portland is nothing to get us very excited. I don't think there is another team that has done as little in the free agent market as the Sabres. Are you listening Darcy?

shrader Posted July 15, 2009 Report Posted July 15, 2009 he accepted the qualifier. Yeah, just saw that over on TSN. That really was a no brainer for both parties.
wonderbread Posted July 15, 2009 Report Posted July 15, 2009 Yeah, just saw that over on TSN. That really was a no brainer for both parties. is that the 10% increase?
nobody Posted July 15, 2009 Report Posted July 15, 2009 So for $550K. I'll say good deal. Of course I'd rather have him locked up for 2 or 3 years.

Wow, a complaint about the front office not doing enough in free agency despite the signing of a player. How original of you.
silvermike Posted July 15, 2009 Report Posted July 15, 2009 Well, arguably, the front office didn't do anything today, Kaleta just decided to sign the deal that he had been tendered by league mandate.
nfreeman Posted July 15, 2009 Report Posted July 15, 2009 Nobody should be complaining about keeping Kaleta.
X. Benedict Posted July 15, 2009 Report Posted July 15, 2009 Well, arguably, the front office didn't do anything today, Kaleta just decided to sign the deal that he had been tendered by league mandate. The organization didn't have to qualify him. Kaleta's agent could have shopped him. He signed his offer, one less thing to worry about.
North Buffalo Posted July 16, 2009 Report Posted July 16, 2009 Wow, a complaint about the front office not doing enough in free agency despite the signing of a player. How original of you. Wow, you sound like a Messiah defender. Enough already, the Sabres could be doing a lot more and until they fill the need in the middle, I think all the complainers have every right to use their voice on the Mountain Top.... Biblical enough for you.

All I'm saying is my opinion of a poster goes right out the window the moment they make threads like this. We couldn't have a thread that says "hey, we signed Kaleta. Hopefully there will be more good news in the coming weeks." No. It's "Darcy's a hump and oh hey, Kaleta signed a qualifier, but the real point is that Darcy is a hump. Darcy = hump. Humpcy. You like my whining, I know it. It's why I do it. Because everyone else whining hasn't gotten the job done, I will also whine. Don't you like it? Well, Darcy is a knob." Who else wants an order of Whaaamburgers and Cries?

You've got the dudes-who-post-redundant-threads-for-no-reason beat locked down. Freedom isn't free.
awesomechip Posted July 16, 2009 Report Posted July 16, 2009 is that the 10% increase? hey there its me chip i think it was a good signing he will provide energy and hits all season long
shrader Posted July 16, 2009 Report Posted July 16, 2009 The organization didn't have to qualify him. Kaleta's agent could have shopped him. He signed his offer, one less thing to worry about. And from a pure budget standpoint, he's signed for the absolute minimum they had budgeted for him. That'll help when it comes to the rest of the RFAs.
Lethbridge Broncos Posted July 16, 2009 Report Posted July 16, 2009 kaleta is great. he equals passion and emotion. he is kurt maltby IMO. a team guy who aggitates. great find by regier..
nfreeman Posted July 16, 2009 Report Posted July 16, 2009 hey there its me chip i think it was a good signing he will provide energy and hits all season long Welcome to the board. Good call on Kaleta.
wonderbread Posted July 16, 2009 Report Posted July 16, 2009 hey there its me chip i think it was a good signing he will provide energy and hits all season long welcome awesome chip. Great to have you one the board!!! Good call. I am glad he signed the QO. Hopefully he continues to fill his needed role on the team. :nana:
... Posted July 16, 2009 Report Posted July 16, 2009 So for $550K. I'll say good deal. Of course I'd rather have him locked up for 2 or 3 years. Yah, Kaleta is among the heart and soul of the Sabres right now. I think the reason he didn't get a longer deal is: A) The Sabres are cheap, but more importantly they're probably concerned about his ability to stay healthy. The way he plays, he's a marked man. B) Kaleta matured as an offensive player last season (and not "offensive" as in "offending", but rather as a player who makes actual plays that lead to goals). I bet he think that if this trend continues, he can do better than $550k a year. He might be eying up a Mair-like contract or better.
darksabre Posted July 16, 2009 Report Posted July 16, 2009 hey there its me chip i think it was a good signing he will provide energy and hits all season long I think we're all looking forward to seeing crash bandicoot out there again. Welcome to the board.
North Buffalo Posted July 16, 2009 Report Posted July 16, 2009 Okay D4rk Sabre: I agree there is a lot of whining about Marcy's decision making deserved too and you are within your rights to whine about the whining, and I agree this is a redundant thread.... degrading into more whining, but given what Marcy has done in the off season he has given the whiners nothing the shut up and not be redundant. In the NYC area it is Emmanuel for the Mets and their whole front office so I agree to much whining, just thought your whining about the whining was kinda silly and figured a tangent was the best way to respond.

You've sorta got me figured out then. By trying to be as much of a dick as possible, now all the whiners know how silly they sound on this end. I enjoy reading posts where people air their complaints in an organized, logical, and factually supported manner. That's why I love this board. It's mind numbing ranting that gets me all riled up, especially during a stressful offseason where the only thing I want to do is have it be October 3rd. As far as going off on tangents, I love completely derailing a thread. I just had no idea where to go with what you said. :P
RayFinkle Posted July 16, 2009 Report Posted July 16, 2009 Wow, a complaint about the front office not doing enough in free agency despite the signing of a player. How original of you. I don't think the Sabres signing their own exclusive rights free agent to a qualifing tender offer is anybody's idea of improving the team via free agency. Apparnetly you feel differently but I suspect you are in the minority.

I bet he think that if this trend continues, he can do better than $550k a year. He might be eying up a Mair-like contract or better. It can be summed up pretty quickly. He got what he deserved. He's at a stage in his career where he hasn't proven a thing yet. If he wants bigger money, he's going to have to go out there and earn it. Sure, there's always the chance that he blows up and has a monster year, costing the Sabres more longterm, but with a player of his style, that's a very low risk move by the Sabres. They are in no way cheap on this one. With the current group of RFAs, the only one Kaleta takes priority over would be Mancari (who I'm sure will end up taking his QO too).
