inkman Posted July 13, 2009 Report Posted July 13, 2009 Unless Friday was the exception, I thought he looked like an infant among boys. He didn't show any more speed than anyone, any more skill than anyone, was knocked off the puck with relative ease by no name dmen, and childishly slapped his stick on the ice during the shot while trailing a player during the shootout simulation. If he is being counted on for any sort of impact this year, the Sabres are in big trouble. I thought Ennis, Kennedy, and Byron all looked head and shoulders B-) above Gerbe. Linky GERBE GETTING CLOSE: Nathan Gerbe insists his struggles last season with the Sabres ? he registered just a single point in Buffalo through 10 games ? came because he played a more defensive style trying to conform to the NHL game. This year, Gerbe plans on using the gifts that have brought him success first at the college, then at the American Hockey League level. That means the jitterbug will be at full throttle. ?Maybe last year I tried to be too safe or too defensive,? Gerbe said. If camp was any indication, Gerbe is ready to make a run at a roster spot. He consistently stood out among his peers, and offensive contributions came as often as they did in Portland last year. Don?t be surprised if he?s this year?s breakout Sabre.
Calvin Posted July 13, 2009 Report Posted July 13, 2009 that was my reaction too, almost all the eyewitness accounts by the folks here on THC thought he was pretty poor at the development camp.. was Tim Schmitt even at the camp?
spndnchz Posted July 13, 2009 Report Posted July 13, 2009 I'd agree he was slow on Friday at camp. While others have said he was impressive the first few days. Maybe he was just tired out from the week. Which would more point to conditioning than his talent.
North Buffalo Posted July 13, 2009 Report Posted July 13, 2009 ?Also Schmitt's comments on Tyler Myers are opposite of what has been posted on this board. Since I was not there, it came as a surprise that he was so critical of Myers? Was this just a lazy reporter writing a story or was he trying to play devils advocate?
Stoner Posted July 13, 2009 Report Posted July 13, 2009 Gerbe said in an interview this week he wasn't trying to make the team in development camp, just work on little parts of his game.
spndnchz Posted July 13, 2009 Report Posted July 13, 2009 Gerbe said in an interview this week he wasn't trying to make the team in development camp, just work on little parts of his game. Maybe he should try lifts in his skates. That would elevate his game.
SDS Posted July 13, 2009 Report Posted July 13, 2009 Maybe he should try lifts in his skates. That would elevate his game. pat lafontaine had a huge 1/4" insert between his holder and his skate boot because his legs were so uneven in length. I have no idea what he did to lengthen that 3rd leg though...

BetweenThePipes00 Posted July 13, 2009 Report Posted July 13, 2009 The next thing I take Tim Schmitt's word on will be the first. Over the last few years it seems I disagree with just about anything he writes about the Bills or Sabres when he is writing about a game I actually watched, so it is tough to take his word for anything sight unseen. It's easy for him to dismiss the defensive side of the game in July and say Gerbe will be better going "full throttle," but Max did a lot of things full throttle too and was a complete nightmare much of the time. And whatever issues he saw in Myers that apparently no one else saw, I don't think anyone expects him to be an All-Star right off the bat. He's still better off learning from his mistakes and being challenged every day in the NHL than going back and dominating in junior.
shrader Posted July 13, 2009 Report Posted July 13, 2009 So the team makes it very clear that they were calling him up in hopes of filling some of the lost offense due to the Vanek injury and Gerbe responds by trying "to be too safe or too defensive"? Brilliant. But then again, this is Nate Gerbe we're talking about.
bob_sauve28 Posted July 13, 2009 Report Posted July 13, 2009 So, does then mean MacArthur gets resigned if Gerbe can't show some promise? I sort of thought he was the General's replacement
X. Benedict Posted July 13, 2009 Report Posted July 13, 2009 So, does then mean MacArthur gets resigned if Gerbe can't show some promise? I sort of thought he was the General's replacement Dominic Moore would be more important to this franchise at anything over 1.8 than Clarke.
bob_sauve28 Posted July 13, 2009 Report Posted July 13, 2009 Dominic Moore would be more important to this franchise at anything over 1.8 than Clarke. I'd absolutely agree with that
nfreeman Posted July 13, 2009 Report Posted July 13, 2009 that was my reaction too, almost all the eyewitness accounts by the folks here on THC thought he was pretty poor at the development camp.. was Tim Schmitt even at the camp? Well, the article states: Here are some random notes and thoughts after a week spent watching the team before decent crowds at Dwyer Arena So he probably attended most if not all of the sessions.
