Lindy is happy

excerpts from the Buff News, Lindy interviewed after camp:

Lindy Ruff, however, isn?t worried.

"I like what we have here as a team, and these guys can continue to grow," the coach said today.

Ruff closed the Sabres? development camp at Niagara University with a steadfast endorsement of his players and the organization. The Sabres, as of now, are sticking with the core of players who failed to make the postseason the past two years, and Ruff has no problem with that.

"I?m OK going in," said Ruff, whose team finished two points out of a playoff spot. "We were pretty close to being where we wanted to be, and a couple disappointing things happened, and we ended up not getting there. The fact that we were able to put on a strong finish [7-2-1 in the final 10 games] was something that I really felt was important for our team."

Unlike a vocal portion of the fan base, Ruff doesn?t see the need for a roster shake-up. He feels the Sabres will return to the postseason if his players merely fulfill their potential and stay healthy.

"I expect more to come from within," he said. "I think that we have more there. We?ve got a [Jason] Pominville that can have a better year. We?ve got a [Drew] Stafford that can continue to grow, and I think with Timmy [Connolly] healthy he can make some players around him better. I think we?ve got some young guys that can step in and make a difference."

So, we should assume Stafford is gonna be signed? Lindy does make a point that if the guys play to potential they can win it. I think we still need a vet center.

Whoa! I don't even know where to start on this one.....I wonder what magical crystallizing event Lindy expects will make last year's also-rans into Cup contenders? Maybe at the first team meeting he should make everyone watch "Rudy".......

That says it all. Lindy loves his job. Play nice.

The next time one of you Ruff apologists tries to argue that if only the guy had some decent players, he'd really show what a great coach he is, I'm going to copy and paste these comments.

Pretty close to where they wanted to be? Eighth place? He expects more to come from within? He hasn't been able to get it out of them for over two seasons now.

LINDY LIKES HIS TEAM. AGAIN. BUT HE CAN'T GET IT INTO THE PLAYOFFS.

Lindy's knob-polishers, please, STFU.

I actually agree with Ruff here. When this team played to it's full potential last year, they were pretty good. They had a couple of runs last year that showed what this team is capable of doing.

The problem is getting these guys to actually WANT to play to their full potential night in and night out. That's where I feel the problem lies. I just see some guys on this roster who choose not to bring it on a nightly basis, and Lindy can't seem to get through to those guys. Not sure what the answer is, but adding another vet wouldn't hurt. These guys need a "T.O." in the locker room. Someone to stand up and call people out, get in faces, shake things up. We don't have a guy like that in our room. Maybe Rivet, but I doubt it's gonna happen. Guess we'll see...

Insanity: doing the same thing over and over again and expecting different results.

I am not sure or is Ruff just towing the line because he is a soldier and isn't going to throw Regier or the ownership under the bus while still giving himself enough wiggle room after the fact by saying we are almost there....

I would be Linde would like another play making center and another scorer with some beef. I wonder if he'll rush up Kasian?

Lindy is either brushing up on "coach speak" or he has a death wish as the head coach of the Sabres. IMO, there is no way he is happy bringing back the same players for the most part that have not sniffed the playoffs for two years.

Please remove head from rectum and consider reality: Do you really think his failure to publicly blast his roster, on July 10, means that his players are good enough to constitute a contending team, and the team's poor showings the past 2 years means Lindy is a bad coach? Really? hatShat do you expect him to say? That management better get him a couple of forwards who can score and have some onions, like the ones they unaccountably allowed to leave 2 years ago? Is Lindy less of a man or a coach for not blasting his boss through the media, or not quitting in disgust? Isn't it possible that he's been assured that further roster changes are in the hopper? Maybe he really likes getting paid $2MM or whatever it is to coach in the NHL, and he realizes that no job is perfect, and sometimes you gotta toe the company line even if you're not happy about something?

Also, is it just a crazy coincidence that Lindy was named an Olympic coach? All those professional hockey lifers are maybe just out to lunch about his coaching ability?

In any case if the sabres don't make the playoff this year I expect you'll get your wish.

What else is he supposed to do, crap all over his players? This stuff is directly out of the NHL coaching handbook.

Only complaint I have about Lindy is his use of back-up goalie and I am not even sure that is entirely his fault.

Long Live Lindy. Hmmmm, maybe I will make a t-shirt with the logo L3. PA, can I count you in for a couple?

I don't give two s**ts what Lindy says in public; I care what he says behind closed doors. It is quite likely that those two things are very different. Unfortunately, we won't ever know what he says behind closed doors, as I imagine that he is not the type of guy to come out after he leaves and blast them. I'm not assuming that he's saying all the right things, because I have no idea, by I also don't know that he isn't.

I do, however, fear that this means that he has been told that no big changes are coming.

I didn't watch the entire movie, but "Rudy" himself spoke at my graduation from Genesee Community College in 1994. I can honestly say that the man is definitely not a good public speaker.

It's out of the basic management handbook. When talking to people outside the organization, stick up for the people who work for you, and the people who hired you.

When the doors close, take care of business.

That's just plain common sense. If only guys like Michael Peca had learned that a long time ago... <_< (Yeah, I know, Peca was a player and not management. However, I still think the same rules apply.)

OK, maybe rationality flew out the window for a minute, but don't some of you Spocks ever get emotional it when you hear this drivel? How stupid do they think the fans are? Option 1 is for Lindy to not really answer the question, or to answer less emphatically. Option 2 might be for him to have gone to DR and LQ and said, listen, next time I'm asked what I think of our team, the paint is going to peel off the walls. Love to see how the gentle flowers on this team would respond to it. They might get pissed!

The "people outside the organization" are the customers! Who said it here just today: give us a fricken' bone! You can only beat down the fan base so long before people lose hope.

Why not? Getting their warm milk and nipples ready every night, wiff their bwanky at nighty-night hasn't worked.

And I guess Tortorella never got that book, he's got a cup and he made the playoffs last year.

But what exactly does it prove in July? Fire them up now and they just might break 80 for the first time ever.

Is that their golf score,... or their end of season point total?

Why is it so hard to believe? The team president and GM have no problem bringing the same load of crap. Why not the coach?

How about sending a message to the GM to get off his arse and get some players on this roster. In the end it will be Lindy's reputation that takes a hit when he can't get this sad attempt at a NHL roster into the playoffs. Regier doesn't care, a day after he is fired no one will even remember he was part of a NHL franchise.

Nonsense. They were talking about him as potential GM of the Leafs not too long ago. And it's utterly ridiculous to say he doesn't care.
