Went today and watched.

Today they scrimmaged, which provided a quick glimpse of what some of these players actually bring in game time.

Myers and Weber were a defensive pairing, and both played like, you guessed it, "men among boys". Calm, cool and collective, they looked NHL ready. Butler also played very well, and looks to be an obvious lock for a roster spot next season. The most impressive defenseman IMO was actually Weber. He looks hungry and motivated for a roster spot this season.

The only forwards that impressed me were Gerbe and Kennedy. Both played well, and both seemed very willing and capable of playing sound two way hockey.

I didn't catch Ennis on the ice at all, so Im unable to comment on him.

Foligno participated in the scrimmage, and laid on a few hits. As was reported, his feet seemed a bit slow.

I don't know what it is, but I absolutely love reading posts like this and sven233's. I think it's because it evokes a long lost ... I don't know... feeling... a feeling that life has otherwise beat down... what is it again?.... oh yeah, Hope.

Keep 'em coming.

I'll be there again tomorrow. I will be sure to pass along any information and observations. Last year, they played pretty much a full game on the last day of practice. They kept score an everything. The only thing they really did different was that when someone took a penalty, instead of going to the box, it was just a penalty shot situation.

So, hopefully they will be doing the same thing tomorrow. As I said, I will be sure to report back any information or observations.

No problem

Kennedy actually may have had the best play of the game. He chased a defenseman behind the net, stripped the puck off the dman's stick, then passed it out front for a quick one timer goal. It all happened in about a 3 second span. :worthy:

When you say someone is a lock for the roster, keep in mind that they're skating with a bunch of 18-21 year olds.

Someone needs to tell that to the easily-impressed John Vogl and Tim Schmitt.

Just got back from the scrimmage game. Some quick thoughts while they're fresh; I'll post pictures later:

Orpik handled Butler rather well in the corners. I was impressed.

Great goal by I believe it was McNabb who brought it all the way from deep in his own end.

I DO NOT like Gerbe. Trade him.

I like Foligno. I bet he makes it to the NHL level faster than initially anticipated.

I don't know what the fuss is over Enroth, the gray team (his) wasn't doing so well today and some of the goals (like McNabb's) were Miller-like soft.

On the flip side, I do like Eno. He was really good.

Funny how the gray team was losing through most of the game when they had the likes of Weber (who wore the injured sweater), Gerbe, Butler, and others playing on that team.

I had my two little boys with me who were freezing, so we left with about 5 minutes left on the clock for the second half of the scrimmage. Needless to say I don't know the final score, but the grays were losing 3-1 when we left.

All in all, a nice way to satisfy the mid-off-season hockey jones. It was nice and cold in there, too!

Almost forgot to add: after watching today's game, I wonder if some of the problems with the Sabres start way early in their development process. The largest example was the several times I saw guys bringing the puck in from the point, had an obvious pass to a team mate on the open side of the net, but instead decided to shoot the puck RIGHT INTO THE GOALIE. That pissed me off because how many times have we watched that happen the past two Sabres seasons?

Another thing: in the penalty shots (they had penalty shots instead of putting guys in the box for penalties) no one seemed to have any moves, or try anything particularly crafty or different. All of the penalty shots I saw were lame.

I hate it when they shoot it right into the goalie as well, but consider all of the times that the team also tried to make that extra pass instead of just shooting the puck. I vividly remember fans screaming SHOOT in HSBC arena when the Sabres were on the powerplay and fans couldn't stand the passing. It goes both ways I guess.....

Just got back from the scrimmage (had to stop and get some tacos).

Brief thoughts:

Eno looked good. Enroth, not so much.

Ennis was the best player on the ice.

Gragnani isn't worth keeping.

Didn't see enough of Myers (he wasn't on the ice a lot), but he was on the ice for the third blue goal, so a -1 for the Myers-Weber line.

Gerbe didn't look like anything special.

McNabb was a surprise.

All in all, worth going to, even though it wasn't overly exciting.

Also, ink didn't assault me with his calves, but we did stand around and look bad-ass.

Was ink wearning a white shirt and red baseball hat?

naw, black tank top and i believe a black red sox cap.

oh and tons of tattoos.

There were three or four guys covered in tattoos that I saw. I did not see a black shirt/black cap combo, though. I did sit behind someone with a laptop who addressed his emails as coming from "John Vogt, Jr.".

Hey, I was there too. Must have gone to shoot some pics when you were talking with Ink.

Ink dude, you drove like 80mph back home?

Close. My Dakota got like 23 MPG. Sweet!

So many new guys, hard to keep track. That and most of the names were floating around in the wind after the first half.

Gerbe: totally UNimpressed.

Ennis: he's got some wheels and great stick handling. At one point he kept the puck on his stick for a good 40 seconds, skating around looking for someone to pass to.

McNabb: he definitely is 6'-4". Laid some nice hits as well.

Myers, Butler, Weber. Yes, men among boys. These guys never seemed to "freak out" when challenged.

Foligno likes to hit.

Lamoureau made some good saves. Better than Eno or Enroth IMO.

Took a bunch of picks, I'll try to load 'em up tonight.

Please tell me they didn't spell his name wrong on his jersey too.

I took his name off the roster sheet. I think his jersey sticker had an "x" on the end. is that right? LamoureauX?

Did Eno move OK? He was out most of last year with an ankle or something like that. He might have a big season in the CCHA.

Lamoureux. I still can't believe the screwed that up on the roster. It probably doesn't speak too well for him sticking around beyond this camp.
