2ForTripping Posted July 6, 2009 Report Posted July 6, 2009 Just saw it over on TSN . The full list of players going to arbitration is there as well.
Lanny Posted July 6, 2009 Report Posted July 6, 2009 Good for him.. I could see him being awarded way too much based on his goal total, and i could see the sabres not accepting it and allowing him to become a FA. Gerbe or Kennedy could bring just as much to the table and cost more the half as much.
Eleven Posted July 6, 2009 Report Posted July 6, 2009 Oops--scanned the front page for "MacArthur," didn't see it, and started a new thread, which thankfully has been merged with this one. Anyway... The team doesn't need this guy as much as he needs a job in the NHL.

I think a hefty raise could jeopardize his position in Buffalo. A team-friendly raise may not..
X. Benedict Posted July 6, 2009 Report Posted July 6, 2009 Just saw it over on TSN . The full list of players going to arbitration is there as well. MacArthur is in a funny position. Most likely he'll settle for something slightly over 10% before the hearing. Once it gets that far he is in danger of Buffalo walking away, in which case he might just make less.
inkman Posted July 6, 2009 Report Posted July 6, 2009 I see no need for him to be on the team this coming season. If this is a way for the Sabres to get away from players like him, then so be it. Hopefully Paille will be handled in the same fashion. Let's get some actual difference makers on this team. They don't have to be 50 goal scorers, just guys that you notice every game.

nucci Posted July 6, 2009 Report Posted July 6, 2009 Not sure what an arbitrator will give MacArthur but I doubt he will be a member of the Sabres this year. Not a big loss to me. Too many average players on this team already.

Not quite enough scoring for the 2nd line, not enough jam and defense for the third, and he plays smallish. He does have nice hands though. Now if we could surgically remove his hands and sew them onto Mike Ryan's useless stumps, we'd have a player.

If he was a 13th or 14th forward I might not have a problem with him on the roster but taking a regular shift, no thanks.
LabattBlue Posted July 6, 2009 Report Posted July 6, 2009 While I am not advocating MacArthur getting a huge increase in salary, I think way too many folks here are tossing him to the curb with no regrets. In his first full season as a Sabre getting bounced around from line to line to the press box, he scored 17 goals which put him 6th best on the club and only 3 behind Stafford and Pominville for the season. I'd give him another year and see if he is able to make the leap to 2nd line winger. I don't think it is a given that Gerbe or Kennedy come up and score at the same pace. I'd focus more on getting rid of the dead weight or locker room primadonnas who have been Sabre regulars for 3- 4+ years before worrying about throwing away a potential scoring line winger who at times showed a good work ethnic along with a knack for scoring goals. Young players are going to be inconsistent.

If he gets his 10% increase then fine however I feel that if his salary in any way hampers the teams ability to sign/trade any additional players the he may need to go. While focusing on clearing dead weight should be paramount DR needs to remember that they young talent can be retained for a significantly smaller salary if identified properly prior to the big payday. Kind of like he thought he was doing with Hecht :wallbash: and less like he did with Pominville. :wallbash:

I can't really separate Clarke from the like of those guys, only he has less talent. I'm not a huge advocate of any of the above players but someone is going to have to put the puck in the net, outside of Vanek.

He went all out early season to stay on the roster and really didn't have the stamina to sustain it. But if he is to prove he has an upside, this blank has to be filled in: I want Clarke MacArthur on the ice when the team needs someone to _________ . Otherwise, he is the left shooting forward in the vein of Denis Hamel or Erik Christensen that can't crack a top 6.
Two or less Posted July 6, 2009 Report Posted July 6, 2009 Sign and trade. That's only possible in the NBA.
Eleven Posted July 6, 2009 Report Posted July 6, 2009 I want Clarke MacArthur on the ice when the team needs someone to _________ . Dress because the team is out of other players? I think we should start calling him "The Corporal." He's no general.
Mbossy Posted July 6, 2009 Report Posted July 6, 2009 That's only possible in the NBA. Can't they sign him, which in effect they have short of salary, and trade him before the season starts, packaged up with someone?

I'm not writing the guy off.........but I think a one year contract would be okay with not much beyond the 10% RFA raise. Andrew Peters filed for Arbitration every year he was eligible and ended up getting something like $10,000 above the 10% raise before it went to a hearing. 10K x 3 ain't a bad little bonus when you have a limited shelf life. It's not the scoring touch that hurts MacArthur at all.....he needs to show a little more Ric Seiling in his two way game if he is to have a solid future.
