Connolly. Again, not many players are better "when he plays" and that is the risk factor. The team's record with him in the lineup against out is much better when he's in.

Hecht - If he continues to stink like last year, then yes I'll agree, but maybe it was one year.

Lydman - I think he's ok, maybe overpaid a million.

Paetsch - He can be replaced by others but they'll only make slightly less than he does.

Lalime - What are you going to get for a million bucks in the backup role?

Tallinder - He needs a change. That is obvious.

The Sabres were 22 and 26 with Connolly in the lineup last season and 19 and 15 when he was out.

TSN was showing a graphic today, that teams who spend the most $$$ on July 1st, usually comes to haunt them in the end. GM's panic and want to rebuild as quickly as possible and forget to remember finances for the future. Montreal's spending today, though looks sexy on paper, could really back fire on them. All three forwards they signed are soft.... on an already soft team..... and Spacek got over paid. We'll see how it turns out but as much as i want Regier to fix this team, i hope he never goes into a day spending money like a crazy manor.

What's the difference of signing players to bad contracts on July 1st compared to other days of the year? Regier has signed just as many bad contracts on overvalued players as any GM in the league. Because he doesn't do it on the 1st day of free agency it makes it better?

The price the NYR paid for Gaborik was high, no doubt. But getting any goal scorer off of the Wild is going to enhance their career numbers. As for the injury thing, no disputing that. He hasn't played a lot. I still think this was one of the day one FA gems. I would be flat out drooling if he was sporting a slug.

Who is going to deal the puck to Gaborik?............Sather is senile. He has created the weakest team in the division up the middle with the exception of Toronto....the diffference is Toronto still has money to spend.

Gomez? Oh, never mind.

That would have worked. Drury is a very good passer around the crease and shifty from the goal extended, but he is probably more comfortable with a Mike Grier on his Right Wing.

Doesn't make it better; just different. It means that, generally, Darcy is correct about the July 1st market and most players signed in the first day are grossly overpaid. On a separate, but related note, he is wrong when it comes to signing players at other points in the season to inflated contracts. The correct answer is not to also be a player in the July 1st market -- as the old saying goes, two wrongs don't make a right -- it's to not overpay at other times.

The Sabres go to great pains to point out what other teams do wrong and what doesn't work. The bottom line is that whatever you believe they could of or should of done or what they done right or what they done wrong is that they have missed the playoffs 5 out of 7 years and they have no right to indict any other teams policies. What they have done hasn't worked either.

All that being said, I still think they may surprise us in the coming days or weeks. They are not dumb people and they know this is their last chance to prove they can rebiuld this team.

Thanks. That's pretty much the point I was making with my question. Darcy gets lauded for bucking the free agent system even though he makes the same egregious mistakes just at different times of the year. A bad contract signed over the summer or at the trade deadline hurts this team just as much as if it were signed at the start of free agency.

Why would you believe this is their last chance? This has come up a few times. If this team misses the playoffs by a few points we will all hear the same old excuses and all the same people will be back the following year. I have little doubt that even if this team finishes in the bottom 10 this season any changes will be made.

2 good posts, although I'd note that I don't think it's fair to put the post-Dominik playoff misses on Darcy or LQ, given that LQ wasn't involved until the end of that era and that the team went BR and was taken over by the NHL and was in danger of folding or moving, owner was arrested, etc.

This is an excellant point and in my book is what the Sabres need to address as well. Look at the 2 teams in the SC final this year and what the center talent and depth was and that for my money is a model to follow for success

Very true. I'd rather have an extra scoring line center playing on the wing than find myself relying on a winger to fill in at center. One of the biggest problems created in the Summer of '07 was that we went from 3-1/2 centers (I can't count Timmy as 1 until he actually plays most of a season post lockout) to 1-1/2. That hole has been left unaddressed now for two offseasons and has yet to be addressed in this one. We'll see if it comes through trade. One thing that gave me hope was Darcy bringing in Moore at the deadline, presumably to provide some insurance down the middle. I'm not saying that Dom is the answer, but at least it showed some acknowledgment of the problem. If we finish the Summer with Darcy again saying that whether we are fine down the middle will depend on Timmy staying healthy, I will flip my #$%^.

NOW I understand better what you were saying last night. This is correct. What to do about it now? Can the Sabres actually get someone to take, say, Tallinder?

That is the problem. Other teams pay big bucks for big players and then in a few years they have to trade them away. The Sabres pay midlevel bucks for midlevel players and then in a few years they have to wait a few more years for those contracts to end.

Or in some cases overpay midlevel players and get stuck with them because their contracts don't match the product (I'm pointing at Hecht on this one). I would expect more than 27 points out of someone making close to 4 mil a year. Maybe its just me. I don't know anymore. Hopefully it was just a bad year but I don't see them moving him.

...I blame Drury for him being in New York.

Wow.

I can't believe that there are still people who feel this way about Drury.

  • It was the first opportunity he had to go and play in New York.
  • The team he grew up watching.
  • The opportunity to wear #23 in Ranger blue.
  • Etc...

He was not going to sign here unless the team really wanted to keep him and keep ($$$) him.

They did everything short of packing his family up and driving them down the 90 to NYC.

Any blame falls solely on the Sabres for allowing him to leave.

I criticize Gore for his BS global warming 'The Debate Is Over' statement but it is almost fitting here.

(Although, the debate is never over...even for this little item)

Does that take into account any other players who might have been in or out of the lineup?

Hmmm, like say a certain goalie and a certain 40 goal scorer at the end of the season?
