red Posted June 30, 2009 Report Posted June 30, 2009 people will blast me for this, but I have always loved McKee, can understand why the Sabres elected to select Spacek and let McKee go (different philosophy and $1 million less), but I would LOVE to have McKee back in Buffalo. His size, toughness, durability, leadership, should not be passed over. We may lose Tallinder, Spacek (hope not), and Numminen this year. McKee would probably come at a bargain (since he did not light it up in St. Louis and has been battling injuries since leaving Buffalo) and could solidify the D. I love the guy!
inkman Posted June 30, 2009 Report Posted June 30, 2009 people will blast me for this Did you read the thread? Nearly everyone is 100% in agreement with you.

That Aud Smell Posted June 30, 2009 Report Posted June 30, 2009 As long as he washes his shin guards he can come back. and be a :chris: You seem to think Jay's going to play in Portland. yeah, i don't get that - wouldn't there be waiver issues that would make such an arrangement all but impossible?

wjag Posted June 30, 2009 Report Posted June 30, 2009 I remember an interview they did with him when the Sabres played the Blues. It was pretty obvious he still loved the Sabres.

Now you're going to think I'm picking on you with this, but it's not the case. I have to ask: Durability?
wonderbread Posted June 30, 2009 Report Posted June 30, 2009 Now you're going to think I'm picking on you with this, but it's not the case. I have to ask: Durability? Great point and I agree with that idea to a point however the leadership that "I" think he would bring would be worth the 1.5 or so he would cost. He would be an upgrade over Paetsch for sure.
shrader Posted July 1, 2009 Report Posted July 1, 2009 Great point and I agree with that idea to a point however the leadership that "I" think he would bring would be worth the 1.5 or so he would cost. He would be an upgrade over Paetsch for sure. Yeah, no doubt, but I don't think Paetsch belongs in the discussion here. He is what he is, a 7th defenseman. Where ever McKee goes, he'll go there to be in the top 6.
Taro T Posted July 1, 2009 Report Posted July 1, 2009 There would be a big saving if that was done. Some vet.presence could be brought in to assist w/ our forwards. On the other hand what if Hanks suddenly "gets" it? Has a stellar rebound season and plays like a Norris candidate. Then you say "good for him, he finally got the injuries out of his head; sucks that it took a change of scenery for him to get it, but good for him." Now you're going to think I'm picking on you with this, but it's not the case. I have to ask: Durability? McKee would be the #6 d-man w/ limited ice time at 5 on 5 and no ice time at pp. He'd get about 1:10-1:20 each pk. With that sort of ice time, he'd probably be reasonably durable - 60+ games. That should be enough for your #6 who'd be getting <$2MM. At $4MM/yr he's nowhere near durable enough; at $1.6MM, why worry. If he is out more, it just means Weber will get some real ice time this year. The team definitely will have a leadership gap on the blueline with the loss of Teppo and likely Spach. McKee fills that gap well. He'll add toughness to the d, but probably wouldn't be much of an upgrade over Spach in that department. He's slow as sin, but the team can afford to have 2 pylons out there (him and Rivet); I wouldn't want to see a 3rd one. He's smart and it can't hurt to have the 2 primary voices on the backline being gritty players. Yeah, no doubt, but I don't think Paetsch belongs in the discussion here. He is what he is, a 7th defenseman. Where ever McKee goes, he'll go there to be in the top 6. Nah, he's an 8th; but he allows your young #7 to get ice time in Portland.
Eleven Posted July 1, 2009 Report Posted July 1, 2009 Yeah, no doubt, but I don't think Paetsch belongs in the discussion here. He is what he is, a 7th defenseman. Where ever McKee goes, he'll go there to be in the top 6. McKee wasn't always in the top 6 in Saint Louis, but he'd be in the top 6 on this team. On other teams? I don't know. He really might not make the top 6. But on this team, he's in the starting lineup, like you say. And again like you say, Paetsch just isn't it. Paetsch should be a great coach in Portland some day. He isn't the NHL quality D-W that his coach (where did HE get that idea?) wants him to be. I think he tries hard--I really do--but I just don't think that he is an NHL-caliber player. What really pisses me off is, Paetsch does try, and there are a couple of his more talented teammates that have the skills (that Paetsch does not have) but who don't put in the effort that he does. It's like Paetsch is the Sabres' version of Rudy.
