VansTheMans Posted June 30, 2009 Report Posted June 30, 2009 one of Jay's foot protectors. McKee invented a slew of protection equipment for shot blocking, did he not?
darksabre Posted June 30, 2009 Report Posted June 30, 2009 McKee invented a slew of protection equipment for shot blocking, did he not? Yup. And it makes me wonder why that stuff didn't catch on even after he left. I'll tell you why. These guys don't care enough to wear Jay McKee's inventions. He was obviously a positive influence while he was here. The Sabres fell in front of everything that year.
Two or less Posted June 30, 2009 Report Posted June 30, 2009 Not sure how much he has left in the tank, i guess gotta take the word of our medical staff and Darcy. If they think he can play i would like the addition but i do think it'd be risky. We could use a leader like McKee though and if the price is real cheap, i don't see why not. Although, i think Brian Burke will be after him as well. McKee showed greed once, i wonder if he'd take a bit less money from us to come back here then to Toronto who could probably offer a little extra $$.
shrader Posted June 30, 2009 Report Posted June 30, 2009 Jay McKee will always be one of the more popular Sabres of all-time. He's not what the Sabres need right now. The is a team in need of answers not more question marks which is what McKee would be at this stage of his career. One of the more popular of all time? Seriously? Have we lowered our standards that much? I liked Jay McKee, but that just sounds crazy to me.
nobody Posted June 30, 2009 Report Posted June 30, 2009 If that is the big move the Sabres make would people really be happy?
darksabre Posted June 30, 2009 Report Posted June 30, 2009 If that is the big move the Sabres make would people really be happy? No. This should never be considered a "big" move. This would be a decent supplement to a larger move or two.
Chief Enabler Posted June 30, 2009 Report Posted June 30, 2009 Could Jay be anymore of an influence than the aged Teppo? I'll be a buyer, what the hell.
deluca67 Posted June 30, 2009 Report Posted June 30, 2009 One of the more popular of all time? Seriously? Have we lowered our standards that much? I liked Jay McKee, but that just sounds crazy to me. As crazy as Rob Ray being one of the most popular Sabres of all time?
SwampD Posted June 30, 2009 Report Posted June 30, 2009 Yep, same old off-season. Either talkin' about guys still on their way up or talikin' about guys already on their way down. I'd still take a chance on him, though. I'm with shrader. I would have never thought that he was only 31 and that's young enough to risk it.
Eleven Posted June 30, 2009 Report Posted June 30, 2009 As crazy as Rob Ray being one of the most popular Sabres of all time? Rob Ray was more popular. Not as good a hockey player, but more popular. McKee is one of my all-time favorites, but he certainly wasn't as "popular," on the '06 team, as even guys like Pominville, Roy, and Campbell, not to mention Drury and Briere. (Anyone know where we can get stats on sales of customized sweaters?) That BS aside, because popularity means sh*t, I'd love to see McKee come back. He still has enough left in the tank to play regularly, and he's got a ton to teach Sekera, Weber, and Myers.
X. Benedict Posted June 30, 2009 Report Posted June 30, 2009 He blocked 185 shots this past year. That is taking away about 20 goals. He still averaged over 17 minutes and was first pairing for PK (at least in games I saw). What you won't get is skating or really much hitting; there is also the the occasional brain fart that made us want the Jumbotron to fall on his head. But sure....I'd rather have him than Paesch and he'd be a heckava lot more valuable than Nolan Pratt

I didn't see to many STL games last year but his numbers suggest he still a puck blocking machine.

It was the only thing they could do in the playoffs to give them a chance.

Stoner Posted June 30, 2009 Report Posted June 30, 2009 Hey, Rhett's a UFA. Let's reunite Cheese and Crackers. Put spndchz in there too.
DR HOLLIDAY Posted June 30, 2009 Report Posted June 30, 2009 Bring back McKee and get rid of Hank and Teppo.............
wonderbread Posted June 30, 2009 Report Posted June 30, 2009 Bring back McKee and get rid of Hank and Teppo............. There would be a big saving if that was done. Some vet.presence could be brought in to assist w/ our forwards. On the other hand what if Hanks suddenly "gets" it? Has a stellar rebound season and plays like a Norris candidate.
That Aud Smell Posted June 30, 2009 Report Posted June 30, 2009 I wouldn't mind him on a third pairing hear, hear. I believe his wife is from here. met them briefly at a summer fundraiser last year (they were being walked around by the board's chair as celebrity guests essentially) - i inferred the same. McKee showed greed once given how he has always played the game, i didn't/don't fault the guy for taking that fat contract - not one bit.
spndnchz Posted June 30, 2009 Report Posted June 30, 2009 Hey, Rhett's a UFA. Let's reunite Cheese and Crackers. Put spndchz in there too. threesome! I'd get McKee, maybe just for Portland, call up as needed.

No doubt. I mean its easy to see why and how he took the $$ and I for one do not blame him one bit. Its not like he had a bidding war (or at least that we know of). I always like Jay for his heart and determination. The Sabres could use someone like him. I usually and not nostalgistic for players to be brought back into the fold but this situ is a little different as I feel he still has something to offer to the team.
nfreeman Posted June 30, 2009 Report Posted June 30, 2009 given how he has always played the game, i didn't/don't fault the guy for taking that fat contract - not one bit. I agree, and I think "greed" is the wrong word. It was a 100% rational choice.

It makes you wonder, though, was his inspiration the reason we only had 2(1.5?) healthy Dmen going into game seven? I'd still try to get him.

I have no doubt that it is. When you put your body on the line for the game, things like this happen. We just had it worse than we should have. The Sabres that year left it all on the ice, heart and soul. It might have cost us in the end, but without it, maybe we would not have even gotten there?
