darksabre Posted June 29, 2009 Report Posted June 29, 2009 Oh god, do it. Bring him back for the veteran minimum for all I care. Anything but another year of Tallinder.
X. Benedict Posted June 29, 2009 Report Posted June 29, 2009 http://www.stltoday.com/blogzone/morning-s...ees-final-year/ I'm not surprised. Guess we need the bring back McKee poll.
inkman Posted June 29, 2009 Report Posted June 29, 2009 Is he really better than what we got at this point? The only guy I wouldn't take over him is Hank.
nfreeman Posted June 29, 2009 Report Posted June 29, 2009 It's hard to let go. He was one of my all-time favorite Sabres. Solid as a rock. I remember watching him in '05-'06 and thinking that he was almost certainly gone as a FA, but at the same time, that they couldn't possibly let that much heart walk out the door.

I remember watching him in '05-'06 and thinking that he was almost certainly gone as a FA, but at the same time, that they couldn't possibly let that much heart walk out the door. That's why I don't think it would be a terrible move for us. He was part of the soul of the team. We're losing Teppo to age, we might as well swap for Jay if it gets someone in the locker room who leads by example. I mean hell, the guy was ready to have doctors amputate his finger just to get him on the ice quicker. Just having him in the room would make half the girls on this team feel guilty for not trying hard enough. Or bring him in as a coach?
shrader Posted June 29, 2009 Report Posted June 29, 2009 If someone were to ask me how old McKee is, there's no way I would've guessed 31. Man he's taking such a beating in a short period of time.

He was worth more to the Sabres than anyone else at the time...but that contract offer for him was ridiculous at the time, and is still a bad one today. I wouldn't mind him on a third pairing
SabresFan526 Posted June 29, 2009 Report Posted June 29, 2009 I'd bring him back. If I am correct, I believe the vet minimum for a player of his age is somewhere around $850K (Not a 100% on this, so CBA experts, please validate). He will be getting $2.67 million in his buyout from St. Louis. I don't see why the Sabres could not sign him for $1.3 million, slightly more than the vet minimum and it closes the $4 million gap he'd be owed if he was still playing for St. Louis. He's whole at $4 million, and the Sabres only have to pay him $1.3 million against their cap. He's an immediate upgrade over Tallinder. And even if you use the argument that he's older and not durable, Tallinder has missed a ton of games as well in the same timespan. McKee has played 158 games in the last 3 years while Tallinder has played 184 games during that same period. Both have missed games due to injury as well as being healthy scratches. One-for-one, I think McKee is an upgrade and all of one year older than Tallinder, McKee's 31 while Tallinder is 30. I'd make the move immediately if I were Darcy.

McKee's body is a lot older than 31 from playing human pincushion. I think his agent will be calling Darcy first.
Stoner Posted June 29, 2009 Report Posted June 29, 2009 Jay was quoted as saying he was surprised at the move given how well he thought he played last season, or toward the end of last season. Sure, he's trying to get the word out there that he still has game. Pride being what it is, I don't know that he or his agent feel he's a "minimum salary" type player yet. I'd love to see him back as he was one of my favorites. Now, is he another former Sabres who maintains a home in the area?

rickshaw Posted June 29, 2009 Report Posted June 29, 2009 I say take him at the lowest possible amount. He's a Sabre!
darksabre Posted June 29, 2009 Report Posted June 29, 2009 whew, I'm glad people here actually agree with bringing him back. I was expecting a sh*t storm of people calling me insane for wanting broken old Jay McKee. This board is a little softer in the heart than it lets on sometimes. although DeLuca hasn't chimed in yet, so we're not completely out of the woods.
VansTheMans Posted June 29, 2009 Report Posted June 29, 2009 I saw this earlier today. I'd be all for bringing him back. He could be signed for a relatively low amount, and we could certainly use the heart and experience in the back end. I haven't seen him play in a few years, so Im not completely sure where his game is.
Fronz1103 Posted June 29, 2009 Report Posted June 29, 2009 Agree on both points. Rivet-Lydman Butler-Sekera Myers-McKee extra: Weber, Paetsch OK with me. I agree, let's bring him back in. If it is true that his play improved during the last part of last season even more for it. However, my question comes in asking are they really going to split up the Rivet Butler combo that worked so well? Also, looking at that list and the extras, If Spacho Doesn't re-sign then the Sabs, if not Mckee they need another veteran player on the blueline in some form. Mckee just makes too much sense that the Organization could overlook....If they do over look this opportunity it wouldnt surprize me. :wallbash:

He could be signed for a relatively low amount, and we could certainly use the heart and experience in the back end. I haven't seen him play in a few years, so Im not completely sure where his game is. I paid quite a bit of attention to him during the playoffs this year. He looked good but with all the other players on the team, he wasn't logging as much ice time as I think he would have been suited for. The only negative that I saw was that he took some bad penalties, but all of Columbus was doing that, so it really wasn't a big deal. He definitely wasn't the reason they lost. He also seemed to have the same effect on the Blues that he did here, which was inspire everyone to block shots. He also still has his knack for good shots on net from the point, which our current roster doesn't do well. (Butler hits the net but not hard, Spach just sends em flying and occasionally gets one on net.) He took a beating, especially playing in the Western Conference. I think it would be good for him to come back East.
VansTheMans Posted June 29, 2009 Report Posted June 29, 2009 If the Sabres picked up McKee, it'd be a great pick up all around. He'd bring experience and heart to the defensive core, not to mention a level of veteran leadership this team currently lacks. He's a gritty, dependable stay at home defensive who will block shots and play well when it matters most. If the Sabres picked up McKee and Knuble (another veteran player with loads of heart and locker room leadership) in the offseason, this team would be in much better shape than it is now.

darksabre Posted June 30, 2009 Report Posted June 30, 2009 so I was looking through some Jay McKee photos on Getty Images from the 05-06 playoffs, and I noticed something I didn't remember from that season. http://www.gettyimages.com/detail/57147381...ty-Images-Sport notice anything strange about Toni?

deluca67 Posted June 30, 2009 Report Posted June 30, 2009 Jay McKee will always be one of the more popular Sabres of all-time. He's not what the Sabres need right now. The is a team in need of answers not more question marks which is what McKee would be at this stage of his career.
