LabattBlue Posted March 5, 2006 Report Posted March 5, 2006 For a while Grier seemed to snap out of it, but I've noticed in recent games both before and after the Olympic break that he is contributing next to nothing and I'm not just talking about points. Dress him if you want, but he can't justify ice time on one of the top 3 lines. At this point, he should be on the 4th line with Gaustad and Pyatt. I don't care how big of a presence he is as a leader, you have to back up your words with your play on the ice. GO SABRES!!!

All I can figure is he provides on-ice leadership and is helpful in shutting down the oppositions top line. He doesn't contribute anything offensively. Remember Kotalik? He's disappeared on that line

I've never been a big fan of Grier - to me he seems clumsy on his skates, seems to misfire on scoring opportunities and for a big guy, doesn't take the body nearly enough for my taste. With a 5/8/13 scoring line and a -7, I have to agree that doesn't warrant a spot on one of the top three lines.
LabattBlue Posted March 7, 2006 Author Report Posted March 7, 2006 He's not great offensively. Some games this year, though, he's looked like his name should be "Selke." Selke winners don't go 15 games without a single point along with a -4 rating over that same timeframe... ;) http://sports.yahoo.com/nhl/players/1465/g...tewXXG5EHJivLYF

This is certainly something I have thought about recently. I think Grier is a good penalty killer and a good "team player" but let's be honest....he's getting (over) paid nearly $1.4 million....for what? 5 goals, 13 points?? As someone else said, it can no longer be justified that he belongs on the top 3 lines. He doesn't have the "hands" that management praised him for when he got him. He does look clumsy out there. He is one of the few guys on the team that hits, which I like, but he doesn't do it enough. At 31 years old, he isn't getting any younger. I say if Mair is coming back this year, we need to explore a trade that includes Grier. Paille or even Thorburn would probably have more points than him by now if they were consistently playing on the top 3 lines.
LabattBlue Posted March 10, 2006 Author Report Posted March 10, 2006 I bash Grier and then he comes back and plays two pretty good games and picks up 3 assists last night. Keep up the good work Mike! ;)
X. Benedict Posted March 10, 2006 Report Posted March 10, 2006 Mike Grier does something that impresses me every game. Last night there were two things that stood out. One was a blocked shot that was beatifully timed with a sliding dive, the second was the feed to Roy for the empty net goal. Do you think Miro Satan would have done that for a rookie? Grier is solid positionally, and he isn't going to score much, but he has been Buffalo's best penalty killer in the last month. He does the little things that help you win games. I love that they put Gaustad on his line with Drury.
SHAAAUGHT!!! Posted March 10, 2006 Report Posted March 10, 2006 I don't think the Sabres mind paying Grier that much because: 1: He over 30 years old 2: He knows the game inside and out; players go to him for advice 3: He is great at penalty killing 4: He can hit like a freight train He is not on the the team to score 20 goals a year. He is there as a role player. His play has been inconsistant this year for sure, but I actually thought that he has stepped up his physical play over the last 5 games. I'm not a big fan of his, but he is not suppose to be an exciting player to watch. They don't expect him to be flashy and bring fans into the seats; he is there to add another key characteristic to the team chemistry. That said I wish he would play with reckless abandon every single game, and also be able to finish some of the scoring chances (I think he missed 3 empty nets this year when the goalie was out of position).
