Pronger to Philly?

2. Philly gave up a lot for him -- a 20-goal forward, a top-6 young defenseman that they liked, and 2 first-rounders. However, that defenseman won't ever be half as good as Pronger, and those first-rounders will likely be in the 18-25 range. If the percentage for all first-rounders playing 200 NHL games is only 39%, the percentage for that range is probably quite a bit lower.

Sbisa is way ahead of schedule. Sabres surprised the league by moving up to get Myers, but the league had them taking Sbisa who actually played a good part of the year in Philly. Though he's not Pronger...(nobody is) at 19 he could be giving Anaheim top 4 minutes for a decade. He looked really steady in Philly for what he was asked to do. He's certainly not a throwaway part of that deal.

It's a gamble they are willing to take but i am not sure i would. A top prospect, and 2 first round picks, and Lupul, a 25yo who just scored 25 goals in the league, will only get better, is ALOT to ask for. Chris Pronger makes them a contender for sure but i am not sure if he is what it takes for them to get over the hump. The will probably be a top 2-3 seed heading to the playoffs, but as the playoffs move forward and the best of the best move on, their big weakness will still be Ray Emery in goal.

and he is almost 35. Which team without a chair will be caught when the music stops?

That old Darcy and Larry mantra about the shrinking cap and woe is them. I see why it persisits as they have been so right about the market place and this CBA the last few years.

Since Philly is now confirmed for the Winter Classic and they still need a 2nd goalie, can we just go ahead and assume they'll sign Ty Conklin?

For sure. That guy is winter classic material if there ever was "winter classic material".

That guy is leading the 21st century in outdoor minutes. He's like a backup Cal Rypkin.

I guess Boston would be a longshot possibility if they want to keep Rask down one more year.

Good luck making it to the end of that deal. That'll be a couple years of dead cap money for Philly.

7.6 the first year, the last three are only 4, then 2 times .525

That's what 275,000 to buy him out

It's still cap space that they can never get away from. Retirement won't cancel it out either.

Oh no, I agree on the dead money. But that's not a lot for a team like Philly was my point.

If the cap falls like it's supposed to, all of these long term deals with no trade clauses are going to cause a ton of headaches. We're already seeing the start of that, thank you Dany Heatley.

I don't have a calculator handy, but that would leave the one year you have missing at like $22M... me thinks something doesn't add up.

what the cap hit when you buy someone out? Like 2/3's the remaining amount on the contract over double the years left?

Not quite. The actual salary paid is 2/3 of the remaining amount (assuming the player is over 26) over double the contract years left. However, the cap hit is a funny thing. Depending on whether the contract was an increasing one or a decreasing one, you can get strange cap hits over the remaining years of the contract, including the possibility of a cap credit. After those remaining years of the original contract, the cap hit is just the buyout salary paid. As an example, I looked at Hecht and Tallinder for buyouts:

You can see some weird things with Hecht's cap hits. There are some stranger example in the CBA (see page 206.)

Here's an interesting item about the Pronger deal: looks like Philly could be pretty screwed if he retires before the 7 years are up: check it out. Bottom line is that the rules are different for contracts for players over 35.

Yikes. A solid $5MM per year in dead cap space.

Normally I don't wish ill on other teams, but I'll make an exception here. Choke on it, Philly! Clarke, Schultz, Leach, Parent -- suffer down!

Good piece........ these terms extend well beyond the CBA...I'm sure the Philly - New York -Toronto and Chicago's will try to negotiate them away somehow.
