SDS Posted June 27, 2009 Author Report Posted June 27, 2009 And Pronger is more than likely gone after this season. That's a steep price to pay, especially when couple with whatever they're going to have to pay to unload Briere's deal. They're really going to have to sweeten any deal that involves him. So, if Briere leaves - how would you rank his deal (from the Flyers perspective) on a scale of 1-10?
shrader Posted June 27, 2009 Report Posted June 27, 2009 So, if Briere leaves - how would you rank his deal (from the Flyers perspective) on a scale of 1-10? They've done a great job rebuilding, but it has absolutely nothing to do with him. Can I give them a negative rating?
nobody Posted June 27, 2009 Report Posted June 27, 2009 On the tsn blog I think I read he will be looking for 5 year @ 6 mil per.
Chief Enabler Posted June 27, 2009 Report Posted June 27, 2009 Mrs. Pronger needs to post in here somewhere  Where are you????.....
deluca67 Posted June 27, 2009 Report Posted June 27, 2009 The idea of Timmonen and Pronger on the blue line is a really scary thought. It is a win now mentality. I'm not sure how they make it fit in the cap....but Lupal, Sbisa, and two first rounders is a lot to pay for a win now pick. Not if they win.

Darcy said he thought Philly had all its ducks in a row on that score.
Foligno's Nose Posted June 27, 2009 Report Posted June 27, 2009 The idea of Timmonen and Pronger on the blue line is a really scary thought. It is a win now mentality ? ? ? Win now? With who in goal??? Philadelphia's loooooong-time Achilles' heel. (Emery, Biron, Niittymaki, Esche, Hackett, Cechmanek, Boucher, Vanbiesbrouck (FA choice over CuJo???), Burke, Snow) Can anybody say mediocrity? The last real winner in net they had was Hextall. I don't care if they have Lidstrom, Phaneuf, Timmonen and Pronger on defense, until they get serious in goal - they are nowhere. (No offense to Biron - come home and retire a Sabre - backing-up Miller. You belong here.)

If you put the right team out there, any goalie can look like an elite player. Philly doesn't have that team though.

At least Philly has been able to make the playoffs 3 out of the last 4 years, and they have also made it to the ECF's once. Sure, Buffalo made it to the EFC's twice, but the Sabres have only made the playoffs 2 times out of the last 7 years. I wouldn't criticize Philly too much. They went from a disaster season in 06/07 to a ECF series in 07/08. Philly is doing something right. Maybe Darcy should take notes?

wjag Posted June 27, 2009 Report Posted June 27, 2009 Emery will look a lot bigger with Pronger-Timmonen in front of him. True dat.. Pronger makes them better if his body holds up.
shrader Posted June 27, 2009 Report Posted June 27, 2009 You think you might be short-shrifting Osgood a bit? No. I'm sure I could list at least 15 goalies I'd rather have before him... or Fleury too.
Hawerchuk Posted June 27, 2009 Report Posted June 27, 2009 How does Philly afford Pronger? Seems to me they are over the cap limit with this addition. Are they trying to re-do Briere's deal or shipping him out? Where do they trim $$$ or don't they have to?
bob_sauve28 Posted June 27, 2009 Report Posted June 27, 2009 that would kind of suck. I don't think so. He's there maybe one year, so what? I don't think it helps the Flyers all that much either. Ya, good player, but if he is there to deal with Crosby and Malkin, forget it. Those young studs will run all over Pronger in a seven game series. This deal doesn't get Flyers father into the playoffs, IMO
bob_sauve28 Posted June 27, 2009 Report Posted June 27, 2009 So, if Briere leaves - how would you rank his deal (from the Flyers perspective) on a scale of 1-10? Do they still have to pick up his salary in getting rid of him? That would be a huge negative of course if they did. And even if they don't you would have to rate it a 3 or maybe even less. He had one good playoffs, right?
IKnowPhysics Posted June 28, 2009 Report Posted June 28, 2009 The worst case scenario from a Sabres perspective is that Pronger signs for a long term contract and provides the last piece to their post-season puzzle. However, there are several nuances that put the screws to Philadelphia and gives us more fodder to laugh at: No Pronger: - Pronger could leave after a season. - Pronger's wife could demand a trade. - Pronger gets injured. - Pronger retires. Flyers future: - The Flyer's have given up three 1st rounders. - Their long term future of young players is trash. - They will have to buy, instead of develop, key talent. - They will always be forced to make bad decisions on July 1st. - They will always have to hump the cap in order to field a team. This seems like the losing business-as-usual we've come to expect from them. In fact, it sort of throws their bad habits in the face of their newly found good habits of developing young fast players like Carter. They've tossed away their future speed, skill, and youth in favor the big old bully, and this is exactly what has cost them every playoff series they've lost to the Sabres in the last fifteen years.
nfreeman Posted June 28, 2009 Report Posted June 28, 2009 Here's my 2 cents on this deal: 1. If I were choosing players for my team for the next 3 years, Pronger is top 5 in the NHL, and either the 1st or the 2nd defenseman I would take (Chara being the other). He is awesome. A force of nature. 2. Philly gave up a lot for him -- a 20-goal forward, a top-6 young defenseman that they liked, and 2 first-rounders. However, that defenseman won't ever be half as good as Pronger, and those first-rounders will likely be in the 18-25 range. If the percentage for all first-rounders playing 200 NHL games is only 39%, the percentage for that range is probably quite a bit lower. 3. If Philly extends him for 2-3 years after this year, it's a great trade for Philly. If he bails after this year, it's a lousy trade. 4. Philly will end up working out their cap situation, most likely by unloading Briere and/or Gagne. 5. Philly will be top 2 or 3 in the East and will be good enough to beat Pittsburgh in the playoffs. 6. If the Sabres had traded Sekera, Kotalik and 2 first-rounders for Pronger AND we had extended Pronger for 2-3 years, I would have been thrilled.
bob_sauve28 Posted June 28, 2009 Report Posted June 28, 2009 5. Philly will be top 2 or 3 in the East and will be good enough to beat Pittsburgh in the playoffs. Oh come on! Most of what you wrote I could possibly agree with, but this I really don't. Pronger won't stop Pittsburg's scoring machine. This in no way puts them over the top. In essence what you are saying is that this makes them the best team in the league. Maybe you are right, but I just don't see it.

Look what Pronger has done the last two places he has been. With their forward ranks and with him, Coburn and Timonen, they could actually win the Cup with Emery in net.
deluca67 Posted June 28, 2009 Report Posted June 28, 2009 Another team in the East gets stronger. If this doesn't get the Sabres attention then all is truly lost for this season. If this team doesn't make a move to significantly impact their roster you might as well list the playoffs right with the Stanley Cup as a unrealistic dream for 2009-10.
