I was watching a replay of the '94 Rangers' Stanley Cup win on MSG over the weekend - a guy in the stands held up a sign while Messier was skating around with the Cup - it said: "Now I can die in peace". I was 13 when the Sabres came into the NHL - I'm 52 now. That's a long time to wait. I know Chicago and Toronto have had a drought that's longer that Buffalo's but they at least have won Cups before. We're like...the 40 year-old virgin. (Which starred Steve Carell who played the news anchor in "Bruce Almighty" and in which the Sabres DID win the Cup...oh God, I'm rambling.)

I'm just a couple of years younger than you and feel the pain just as much.

One FG in SB 25, better goaltending in 74-75, no injuries to the blueline against Carolina, etc...

So close but yet so far :( .

Buffalo ownership and management ultimately can't compete with the money thrown around by the big boys. They're not smart enough or rich enough and the market can't support it. If you're an underdog you have to try harder and the Sabres keep picking players who can't or won't.

Try being a Cubs fan...

It's not a money issue. Stop using that excuse.

I think more than anything, a culture of winning, begets winning. A culture of losing, begets losing. When the Bills got on a roll toward four Superbowls, they had a swagger. A confidence. Once that was lost and the players retired, were traded, allowed to leave, or cut, they lost the mojo and never got it back. But for four glorious years, this town had it. Players wanted to play for the Bills.

The Sabres have never had it. They have had a good season or two, but nothing that lasted long enough to be engrained in the consciousness of the Buffalo fans nor the organization's players, coaches, or owners. The closest they came was the heyday of the French Connection.

I'm a firm believer that teams make their own luck, it isn't bestowed upon them. It's not money, but well spent money goes a long way too.
