San Diego Sabres Fan Posted June 11, 2009 Report Posted June 11, 2009 First move by new Dallas Star GM Joe Nieuwendyk was to fire six year head coach Dave Tippett, and replace him with the much traveled Marc Crawford. I gues it's not good enough just to get your team in the playoffs anymore? We miss the dance two years in a row but what do the Sabres do?...........................................................I am still waiting to find out?

I'll say it until my grave...just because another team fires their coach doesn't mean we have to also.

This reflects less on Tippett's ability than Joe Neiwendyk's direction as GM. Sadly for Tippet, they had more of a carnival barker than a GM in Brett Hull.

If solving the Sabres problems were as simple as changing the coach I would be all for it. The problems go much deeper and removing one the best coaches in the NHL will only hurt this franchise not only now but long term as well. You have to wonder if ownership is running the Dallas Stars or the fans are. Joe Nieuwendyk as GM? He comes in and hires a recognizable name as head coach. I will only guess he plans on filling the roster with older name players that fans will recognize.

shrader Posted June 12, 2009 Report Posted June 12, 2009 When making a statement like "I gues it's not good enough just to get your team in the playoffs anymore" it's probably best to be talking about a team that actually did make the playoffs.

The Stars made the playoffs five times in his six seasons. This factoid brought to you by FIVE OF THE LAST SEVEN? with the support of phrases like WITHOUT A TIE IN WASHINGTON ON THE LAST DAY OF THE SEASON, IT WOULD BE SIX OF THE LAST NINE?

My God, if Ruff had ever done that, there'd be lobbying here for renaming the Jack Adams in his honor.

Well if we're going to play that game, why not mention that the Sabres could have just as easily made the playoffs each of the last two seasons if one game ended differently (not sure on last season, we finished 2 points behind Boston, one more win against them would've left us tied in the wins and points column)? And I knew the two consecutive years thing would come up, but the statement I highlighted looks bad. Yes, they made the playoffs last year, but they missed miserably this year. Our fans love to complain, but we didn't have it nearly as bad as they did with the Brett Hull-Sean Avery sideshow in Dallas.

The poster's point, I think, is that if a coach can be fired after making the playoffs five out of six years, how can another be retained after missing, well, you know...

The poster's point, I think, is that if a coach can be fired after making the playoffs five out of six years, how can another be retained after missing, well, you know... Because we still have the same GM. Do you think if Darcy got fired that Lindy would stay? If it was up to him? Do you think the new GM would want to clean house and regardless of Lindy's ability show him the door? Lindy and Darcy seem pretty tight. I don't see Lindy hanging around when his friend gets fired. I think we've agreed here before that it's both or none at all. He'll turn up somewhere, I think Calgary, Minnesota and New Jersey are looking for coaches aren't they?

I'm sure that's his point, but the way it is stated is pretty weak. But if you want a real reason why some of these coaches are being fired and others aren't, take a look at the media in their respective cities. Of course, then there's the GM thing that X and chz have brought up.
SwampD Posted June 12, 2009 Report Posted June 12, 2009 Well, since there was no change at GM and no change at coach, and the same minor moves will take place in the offseason, I'll bet the Sabres go 7-9 for the third year in a row...oh...wait.

SwampD Posted June 12, 2009 Report Posted June 12, 2009 My name is Buffalo and I shall be known as Mediocre. Well, hello there Buffalo. I know you. You're the one who is really unhappy with the "status quo", yet you don't want to change anything, right?

Quick, name the 30 goal scorers in Dallas the last 5 years.
Sabre Dance Posted June 12, 2009 Report Posted June 12, 2009 Well, hello there Buffalo. I know you. You're the one who is really unhappy with the "status quo", yet you don't want to change anything, right? That statement exactly describes what's wrong with this area. My goodness, it took over a decade to figure out that it wouldn't really be feasible to re-use the Aud! What other NHL city that built a new arena didn't have a plan in place to deal with the old one (besides Buffalo)? I've said it before, but I'll chime in again. I have no doubt that Lindy Ruff is a good coach (and a heck of a nice guy). He'll land on his feet wherever he goes. Hey, Pat Quinn is a good coach too, and he's been fired by some of the most prominent teams in the league. After a while, the players get used to hearing the same old same old. A new coach equals a new approach, new interest, etc. Even Lindy Ruff stated that he keeps trying to find new ways to keep practices from becoming boring. So you have a team that goes to the finals one year. The next season, the team underperforms for the first part of the season. They fire the head coach, bring in a guys who's never coached in the NHL before and.....they take the reigning Stanley Cup champs to game 7 in the finals. Of course, I'm talking about the Penguins. I'm not saying that what they did is the way to run a ship, but the results are there. No doubt that the Sabres need better talent, better scouting and maybe also a kick in the a**. A new coach could be the kick they need.
SabresFan526 Posted June 12, 2009 Report Posted June 12, 2009 Just my opinion, but I think Tippet for Crawford is a step back. Quick, name the 30 goal scorers in Dallas the last 5 years. I agree 100%. Crawford had a loaded team with Quebec/Colorado. He had great talent in Vancouver and never did anything in the playoffs there and probably triggered the assault on Steve Moore. He did nothing in LA either. This move makes no sense to me at all. If nothing else the Stars now have the coach with the best head of hair in the NHL, but that's about all I can say. I find Crawford to be smug and classless. He was suspended when he was a player for spitting on the opposing team's coach in the minors. He's just a jerk and I can't stand him.
