tom webster Posted July 17, 2009 Report Posted July 17, 2009 I've always said that the turn-around from President's Trophy winners and Stanley Cup favorites to Conference finals washouts happened when we traded Marty Biron. Miller is the man, but Biron was always one of my favorite Sabres. Have we beaten him since he went to Philly? One win against Philly could have put us on the playoffs this year, but we got swept. Also, I'm not sure we have beaten Ty Conklin since we let him go. Maybe too may secrets go with our golatenders when they leave. Philly swept Buffalo because they were the better team. The year before, Buffalo beat Biron 3 out of 4 games although 1 was in overtime.
bottlecap Posted July 17, 2009 Report Posted July 17, 2009 k But if Miller does the Olympics, he's out, what a month or there abouts? Potential injuries and rest-periods aside, I think the Sabres can, or SHOULD, do better than Lalime in net and Enroth on the bench. It's not so far-fetched when you consider it in a near-vacuum. Honestly, the Lalime/Enroth tandem makes me shudder. I think pro athletes playing in the Olympics is a joke. It's against the spirit of the amateur competition. I know it's common now, but it's very wrong. Like the WBC I see guys getting hurt, and losing time with the club that pays them the big bucks. Out a month? The Sabres shouldn't allow this nonsense. You saw what happened when Miller was out down the stretch last year. The Olympics for pro athletes is just a way to pad the resume and has nothing to do with the glory of international Olympic competition, which has died and been replaced by something fake and hollow.

Without opining on the concept of whether pro athletes should play in the olympics, I will disagree with the bolded statement. Hockey players love playing in the Olympics. It's a major point of pride for them. They would go through a wall to make their respective Olympic teams and to win games in the tournament. I think it's actually very cool that they care so much about it -- as opposed to (until recently) American NBA players, most of whom had no desire to play for their national team.
nobody Posted July 17, 2009 Report Posted July 17, 2009 Philly also signed Brian Boucher who was very good for San Jose last year. Boucher will be the #1 in Philly by Christmas.

I remember Teppo in tears when Finland lost the gold medal game. That's pretty telling.

From what I can remember, Germany didn't allow professional hockey players from their country to play for Germany when the switch was made. Germany may still practice that. I wish the U.S. would follow Germany on that one... I also wish the Olympics would go back to allowing amateurs only. Allowing professional athletes into the Olympics did take away some of the patriotism once involved. Many athletes, sports analysts, etc... have said this. As for what I put in bold, I think it is a biased opinion to say American NBA players have a smaller desire to play for their national team than American NHL players. And when I mention biased opinion, I am referring to you liking hockey more than basketball. I assume you like hockey more. You also have to factor into play the summer Olympics takes place during the NBA's offseason. The winter Olympics takes place during the NHL season. NHL players aren't sacrificing time off.
red Posted July 17, 2009 Report Posted July 17, 2009 Isn't all this Biron talk just farting in the wind? They do have Lalime under contract for another year. HEY...as long as I'm farting downwind, what's the problem with it?
sabresman17 Posted July 17, 2009 Report Posted July 17, 2009 We can't afford him as a back up besides we already got Lalime for 1 more year

I do like hockey more, but I have historically liked basketball as well. There are numerous examples of NBA stars choosing not to play for the US team. I did say (and believe) that I think this has recently shifted, with guys like Kobe and LeBron making it cool again. The point about the Olympics taking place in the offseason is an interesting one, but I think hockey players generally would go through a wall to play for their teams regardless of what time of year it is.

Many of the American NHL players who are capable of playing for the Olympic team are paid well. If they had the choice of playing between an offseason and an Olympic appearance, I am almost positive they would make the same choice many American NBA players have made. Hockey players are people too. Rest is just as important as hard work. Many players/teams that make it to the Stanley Cup do not put up the numbers they did in the previous season. I do not look down upon the American NBA players. To be honest, I don't care for basketball. When it comes to the Olympics, I'm just trying to say a difference cannot be made between the American NHL players and the American NBA players. Kobe Bryant, Lebron James, Carmelo Anthony, etc... did play in the last summer Olympics.

Two or less Posted July 22, 2009 Report Posted July 22, 2009 Marty Biron signs a 1 year, $1.4 million deal with the NY Islanders. per Darren Dreger from TSN

darksabre Posted July 22, 2009 Report Posted July 22, 2009 Rolosson and Biron.....? I wonder if there is a chance of signing Mika Norenen too? Steve Shields is coming out of retirement.
2ForTripping Posted July 22, 2009 Report Posted July 22, 2009 Chatty Cathy signed for not much more than Lalime ain't that a kick in the head?
wonderbread Posted July 22, 2009 Report Posted July 22, 2009 WTF? 1.4. Poor Marty hope he doesn't have to schlep old memorbilia with Conrad Doebler.
Taro T Posted July 22, 2009 Report Posted July 22, 2009 Rolosson and Biron.....? I wonder if there is a chance of signing Mika Norenen too? I'd hold out for Draper. He should already know the system. ;)

Can you name a single American NHL player who chose not to play in the Olympics because he preferred to have time off? As for Kobe and LeBron -- I mentioned twice that the recent trend has been towards participation, which I think is great. Previously, though, a substantial number of NBA stars (like Shaq, Karl Malone, etc.) just couldn't be bothered.
SwampD Posted July 22, 2009 Report Posted July 22, 2009 I love Olympic hockey. The Sabres aren't going to win the SC this coming year anyway. In fact, I feel that they will be lucky to even make the playoffs, so who cares if Miller gets hurt during the Olympics. It's not going to change the outcome of our season. And anything that gives me more hockey to watch, I'm for.
