San Diego Sabres Fan Posted June 9, 2009 Report Posted June 9, 2009 Has anyone heard anything out of Philly about the Flyers resigning Biron or any teams that have expressed an interst in him? I think at the right price he would be an upgrade as our back up, bottom line is that the Sabres should have never let Conklin go, this is a good example of Darcy out smarting himself! I'm sure Conklin is happy now since it looks like he is going to get his ring and his name on Lord Stanley.

inkman Posted June 9, 2009 Report Posted June 9, 2009 a) The Flyers just signed Emery. b) Conklin wasn't all that with the Sabres. c) It has nothing to do with Darcy outsmarting himself as much as Lindy extremely poor handling of back-up goalies. d) As Marty was seemingly the only back-up to thrive under Lindy, I would suggest it. Although, when Marty did have success as a back-up in Buffalo, he got way more minutes than any back-up in recent memory.
shrader Posted June 9, 2009 Report Posted June 9, 2009 This whole Conklin thing is something that never ceases to amaze me. Other than last year, what has he ever done in the NHL? His numbers are average at best. If he was this incredible goalie that some seem to think, he would've gotten more than the two one year deals he received since leaving here.

Again, I think Marty is good for the locker room but, see below He's looking beyond backup money to elite starter money. No chance, IMO. Conklin played 5 games with Buffalo, isn't that enough to see if he's good? /sarcasm. Conklin moves around because he's cheap, he got 500k with the Pens and now 750 with Detroit. How does Marty think he's getting 3.5 mill when Conklin, at 1/3 the price tag is better?
shrader Posted June 9, 2009 Report Posted June 9, 2009 He moves around a lot because he's cheap and he's cheap because he's not very good. That's a very important detail.
inkman Posted June 9, 2009 Report Posted June 9, 2009 He moves around a lot because he's cheap and he's cheap because he's not very good. Sounds like me.
nucci Posted June 9, 2009 Report Posted June 9, 2009 Philly will not re-sign Biron because they have very little space under the cap and Biron wants a raise from last year's $3.5M. They signed Emery because he is cheap and right now he is their only goalie under contract. Flyers will continue to have goaltending problems.

Don't forget that we scored over 4 goals a night for him, when he was the backup. He had a 3.04 GAA, and an .899 SV%. As a matter of fact, in his last season here, his numbers were virtually identical to Lalime's this year. Had Marty been here still, he'd be looking at 5 wins and 13 losses as well, not the other way around.
spndnchz Posted July 16, 2009 Report Posted July 16, 2009 Marty, thinking about going east to play some hockey? http://www.thehockeynews.com/articles/2721...ngs-remain.html
... Posted July 16, 2009 Report Posted July 16, 2009 I liked the meme on WGR yesterday regarding Biron. Bulldog was making the case that with Miller possibly being tied up with the Olympics, the Sabres will need better than Lalime. Not to mention the effect he would most likely have on the locker room. It would be a stretch, but I can't help but think that it'd be a positive move if the Sabres could somehow sign him.

It sounds about right though as per spndnchz's link , he priced himself out of the market.

For 2 mill a season, and around 20-25 games, I'd be happy to have Marty back in a Sabres jersey. I just don't think he'd sign for those numbers.
Eleven Posted July 16, 2009 Report Posted July 16, 2009 Philly also signed Brian Boucher who was very good for San Jose last year. He was even better for the Sabres in 2001, IIRC. Or was that Cechmanek?
inkman Posted July 17, 2009 Report Posted July 17, 2009 Isn't all this Biron talk just farting in the wind? They do have Lalime under contract for another year.

I just don't think he'd sign for those numbers. Even with the Miller injury, Lalime still only got into 24 games last year. No Sabres backup is going to get 20-25 as long as Miller is in net and healthy (and yes, I know exactly what response will be made to this by certain posters).
Two or less Posted July 17, 2009 Report Posted July 17, 2009 For 2 mill a season, and around 20-25 games, I'd be happy to have Marty back in a Sabres jersey. I just don't think he'd sign for those numbers. Sabres can't afford to pay a goalie $2 million a season to be a backup. I mean, that would mean Sabres spending $8.2 mil on just goalies, would probably make us the most expensive goaltending tandem in the league..... i didn't research it but i'm sure it'd be very close to the top.
nfreeman Posted July 17, 2009 Report Posted July 17, 2009 Isn't all this Biron talk just farting in the wind? They do have Lalime under contract for another year. correct.
Tyrannustyrannus Posted July 17, 2009 Report Posted July 17, 2009 I've always said that the turn-around from President's Trophy winners and Stanley Cup favorites to Conference finals washouts happened when we traded Marty Biron. Miller is the man, but Biron was always one of my favorite Sabres. Have we beaten him since he went to Philly? One win against Philly could have put us on the playoffs this year, but we got swept. Also, I'm not sure we have beaten Ty Conklin since we let him go. Maybe too may secrets go with our golatenders when they leave.
... Posted July 17, 2009 Report Posted July 17, 2009 correct. But if Miller does the Olympics, he's out, what a month or there abouts? Potential injuries and rest-periods aside, I think the Sabres can, or SHOULD, do better than Lalime in net and Enroth on the bench. It's not so far-fetched when you consider it in a near-vacuum. Honestly, the Lalime/Enroth tandem makes me shudder.
inkman Posted July 17, 2009 Report Posted July 17, 2009 Maybe too may secrets go with our golatenders when they leave. Maybe the Sabres can re-sign every goalie in the league that played for them at one time to prevent this.

Yeah, it might cost him a few games due to fatigue, but it won't force them at any time to go with Lalime/Enroth.

I'm imagining he will be splitting time with Thomas at the Olympics, so hopefully he won't get too worn down while he's there.
