tom webster Posted May 29, 2009 Report Posted May 29, 2009 Given my track record, both of these guys will be signed in about 5 minutes. In all seriousness, while both players are worthy of a chance in Portland, neither strikes me as so valuable that I will criticize DR if they aren't signed. http://www.sabresprospects.com/

shrader Posted May 29, 2009 Report Posted May 29, 2009 Just based on numbers alone Byron looks worthy of a shot but who knows... You would think that being the 4th leading scorer would mean something. I took a look at the guys who finished above him. -All 3 are 20 years old, in their last year with the league -All 3 went undrafted -All 3 didn't score much early in their careers Byron pretty much fits that same label, except he was drafted and he will be eligible for one more season next year. It really makes you wonder about the quality of the league right now. It doesn't look like there are any young standouts right now, no player from the Q went in the first round last year.

IIRC...Byron had a very strong Memorial Cup tourney last year. Do they still call the Q, Bingo?
LabattBlue Posted May 29, 2009 Report Posted May 29, 2009 I'd like see them both signed(they won't cost a lot), but if the FO feels they have no future as pros, I'll defer to them as they have seen them more than I have. That being said, if they pass on them and they make it to the NHL(does the name Wideman ring a bell), I'll be the first one to tell you they screwed up again.

I guess they must have felt better about Rad Hecl at the time, and they had Rory Fitzpatricks right hand shot.
nobody Posted May 29, 2009 Report Posted May 29, 2009 The team still has to fill out the lower level with players. Might as well sign them if the price is right.
wildcat48 Posted May 30, 2009 Report Posted May 30, 2009 Sabres get Byron under contract May 29, 2009 Portland, ME ? According to several sources including SportsJuniors.com, Buffalo Sabres prospect Paul Byron has signed a three-year entry-level deal with the NHL club. Read the rest of this entry ?

Two or less Posted June 1, 2009 Report Posted June 1, 2009 I wonder how good this kid could be? Vyacheslav Buravchikov (Buffalo Sabres) offered deal by Sabres National Hockey League (NHL) - Buffalo Sabres have once again extended an offer to the 22 year old Russian defenseman Vyacheslav Buravchikov (Buffalo Sabres). The club also reportedly offered the young defenseman an offer last summer, but at the time he was still under contract with HC Ak Bars. That contract is now over and Buravchikov is a free agent who is able to come to North America. Buravchikov has recently enjoyed several strong seasons in Russia with HC Ak Bars, this year earning the Gagarin Cup with his club. He had the misfortune of being drafted in the first year after the collapse of an agreement between the NHL and Russia. While projected to be a top two round talent who even had a chance to be picked up late in the first round, he fell to the sixth round because the Russians were largely being kept off the board. link- http://www.russianprospects.com/public/tou...amp;anchor=News

inkman Posted June 1, 2009 Report Posted June 1, 2009 Talk to me when he starts putting up the backward 3's. :wallbash: I think he played for Ак Барс Казань. Sorry it's not backward.

You forgot the pi character in between the gamma-shaped "r" and the o. But the stats are these, for '07-'08, in more familiar terms: 56 GP, 2G, 0A, 2P, 16PIM. And yeah, they think 3 is a letter over there. Not sure about backwards 3. Maybe an anti-letter. Maybe it's a number.

... Posted June 4, 2009 Report Posted June 4, 2009 http://sabres.nhl.com/team/app/?service=pa...rticleid=424608 I don't get it. Another teeny tiny dude at 5?9?, 165 lbs. Doesn't DR get it, or am I missing somerthing? WE NEED SIZE! These little guys are getting pounded out there. Once in a while you'll see a nice hit from Roy or others of his stature, but over the long haul the big guys aren't taking the little ones too seriously. It'd be one thing if he were the only small guy waiting down the pike, but, he's not. Unless DR is thinking of putting Gerbe up as trade bait.

So instead they're supposed to let a guy they believe has NHL ability go back into the draft? Whether or not he ever makes the NHL, just like anyone else at the AHL level right now, he is an asset to this team.

Nothing to lose here.... signing a 6th rounder to spend some time in the A. He just turned 20. If you have a 6th rounder worth signing, that is good news.

That's the thing, DR shouldn't be deciding if Byron can help the Sabres when choosing to sign him or not; he should be thinking about whether he can be a player in the NHL. Let's say that Byron is the next Matin St. Louis, then while we may not need another smaller player, he will have trade value. Whether it's Byron or Gerbe or even Roy, someone will have to go if they are all NHL-caliber players. However, every team can afford one small guy (even the Ducks have 5' 9" Andrew Ebett), so if they are capable, they have trade value.

So the option is sign him or throw him back to the draft and get nothing.
