The Amp Energy NHL Winter Classic was honored as the 2009 Sports Event of the Year by the SportsBusiness Journal and SportsBusiness Daily. The award was presented live at a special ceremony held Thursday, May 28th at the New York Marriott Marquis in Manhattan. The Amp Energy NHL Winter Classic was recognized as part of the Sports Business Awards program, presented by Street & Smith's SportsBusiness Journal and SportsBusiness Daily, the two leading publications on the business of sports. The Sports Business Awards recognize excellence and outstanding achievement in the sports industry for 2008. The Amp Energy NHL Winter Classic was chosen from five nominees for Sports Event of the Year including, in alphabetical order, Daytona 500, MLB All-Star Game, NBA All-Star Game and the U.S. Open (Golf). As reported by the Sports Business Journal, "In a bold move, the NHL stole the limelight away from college football on New Year's Day. A record crowd of more than 71,000 at Buffalo's Ralph Wilson Stadium witnessed the historic Winter Classic, which established a blueprint for the future. Earning a 2.6 overnight rating on NBC, the Classic posted the best overnight NHL regular-season rating in more than a decade." That truly was an awesome day.
Stoner Posted May 29, 2009 Report Posted May 29, 2009 How was it the 2009 event of the year? Awesome as in eliciting awe? OK. Awesome as in "chillaxin' sweet" as a tweener such as you would define it? Nah. Sabres lost.

Does it say a lot about 2008 that the best sporting event of the year happened on the first day? It was all downhill from there.
SwampD Posted May 29, 2009 Report Posted May 29, 2009 It was the best event of the year...until Crosby scored.

And not just that, it also took place in rather poor conditions with a lot stoppage in play due to the ice needing fixing, repeatedly. Don't get me wrong. For all it's worth, I thought the idea was nice, had a lot of charm and definitely drew the attention it should, but I think it'd been a heckuva lot nicer if it had been on a clear day, and the game ended 5-5 instead. Ever seen the Swedes playing Bandy on those huge outside rinks? This is the kind of ice and weather the Winter Classic should've been treated to, but what can you do about the weather, eh? Sorry about the crappy music in the vid.

The Chicago winter classic had the right weather, but the Buffalo one was a lot more fun to be at. Can't tailgate at Wrigley--the atmosphere was off a little bit.
Stoner Posted May 30, 2009 Report Posted May 30, 2009 The News writes today that, "The outdoor hockey game held in Ralph Wilson Stadium was named the 2008 Sports Event of the Year by SportsBusiness Journal and SportsBusiness Daily." Wrong! The publications clearly identified it as the 2009 event of the year in their press release. This isn't over.
