BagBoy Posted October 21, 2016 Report Posted October 21, 2016 Regarding how terrible Bob Dylan is, IMO http://pitchfork.com/news/69151-kurt-vonnegut-in-1991-bob-dylan-is-the-worst-poet-alive/ I love Vonnegut, but these are not the words of the worst poet alive: Tangled Up In Blue. Early one mornin' the sun was shinin'I was layin' in bed Wondrin' if she'd changed at all If her hair was still red Her folks they said our lives together Sure was gonna be rough They never did like Mama's homemade dress Papa's bank book wasn't big enough And I was standin' on the side of the road Rain fallin' on my shoes Heading out for the east coast Lord knows I've paid some dues Gettin' through Tangled up in blue She was married when we first metSoon to be divorced I helped her out of a jam I guess But I used a little too much force We drove that car as far as we could Abandoned it out west Split up on a dark sad night Both agreeing it was best She turned around to look at me As I was walkin' away I heard her say over my shoulder We'll meet again some day On the avenue Tangled up in blue I had a job in the great north woodsWorking as a cook for a spell But I never did like it all that much And one day the axe just fell So I drifted down to New Orleans Where I was looking for to be employed Workin' for a while on a fishin' boat Right outside of Delacroix But all the while I was alone The past was close behind I seen a lot of women But she never escaped my mind And I just grew Tangled up in blue She was workin' in a topless placeAnd I stopped in for a beer I just kept lookin' at the side of her face In the spotlight so clear And later on as the crowd thinned out I's just about to do the same She was standing there in back of my chair Said to me, Don't I know your name? I muttered somethin' under my breath She studied the lines on my face I must admit I felt a little uneasy When she bent down to tie the laces Of my shoe Tangled up in blue She lit a burner on the stoveAnd offered me a pipe I thought you'd never say hello, she said You look like the silent type Then she opened up a book of poems And handed it to me Written by an Italian poet From the thirteenth century And everyone of them words rang true And glowed like burnin' coal Pourin' off of every page Like it was written in my soul From me to you Tangled up in blue I lived with them on Montague StreetIn a basement down the stairs There was music in the cafes at night And revolution in the air Then he started into dealing with slaves And something inside of him died She had to sell everything she owned And froze up inside And when finally the bottom fell out I became withdrawn The only thing I knew how to do Was to keep on keepin' on Like a bird that flew Tangled up in blue So now I'm goin' back againI got to get to her somehow All the people we used to know They're an illusion to me now Some are mathematicians Some are carpenters' wives Don't know how it all got started I don't know what they're doin' with their lives But me, I'm still on the road Headin' for another joint We always did feel the same We just saw it from a different point Of view Tangled up in blue Quote
WildCard Posted October 21, 2016 Report Posted October 21, 2016 (edited) That's a good story, but is it good poetry? [V1] These warehouse wages kill the end's introduction Man, I shoulda' schooled it up when I was younger, shoulda' stuck to plan Always had the dreams of bein' more self-assertive And my kid's a teenager now, he needs the health insurance So break my body, break-break my soul down Just another zombie walkin' blindly through ya ghost town Pull up to the bar to politic and tap the power Ain't nobody really all that jolly at your happy hour But I don't wanna go home yet So I'ma talk to my cigarette and that television set It doesn't matter what brand or station Anything to take away from the current situation No overtime pay, no holiday Months behind on everything but the lottery Winter 'round the corner, guaranteein' that my car dies Wifey havin' trouble tryna juggle both the part-times My cup ain't close to filled up We tryna build up so we could have enough And when I finally get the color, won't be nothin' else to paint on A friend of mine tried to kill himself to the same song [V2] My better half is mad at makin' magic outta can goods My tax bracket status got her questionin' my manhood My shorty got caught smokin' weed at a concert And if I smack 'em everybody treats me like a monster My neighbors ain't doin' much better And we makin' competition instead of stickin' together Can't save no nest egg, in fact this nest is rented In fact that rent is late, wait The money ain't here, the raise ain't comin' Just me and my son and that crazy woman And those bartenders, this whole ######in' country Got everybody swallowin' that lunch meat Maybe we could speed up the process Kill me in my thirties in the name of progress Put me in the dirt and then change the topic Sometimes seems like the only way to stop it Contemplate my departure date Doesn't take a lot to get a lot of us to talk this way Take a shot at me, that's all I'm obligated for Apparently my only guarantee is a walk-away [Outro x2] The only guarantee in life Is a life worth dyin' for Cause death don't wait for no one It's sittin' on yo front doo Edited October 21, 2016 by WildCard Quote
Sabel79 Posted October 21, 2016 Report Posted October 21, 2016 Vonnegut is wrong; it's long been settled that the worst poet on Earth, nay, the galaxy, is Paula Nancy Millstone Jennings. Quote

WildCard Posted October 21, 2016 Report Posted October 21, 2016 (edited) Wild Card, those lyrics you posted are good. Who is that from? Man, I'm so happy you think so! Atmosphere is the artist, he's absolutely amazing This is what rap can be. That simply guitar in the background makes it for me. And, of course, the lyrics are amazing Edited October 21, 2016 by WildCard Quote

WildCard Posted October 21, 2016 Report Posted October 21, 2016 (edited) More, just because I love this artist so much Promise your jaw will drop at the end of this song. I haven't personally been through this situation, but it may hit home with a few of you Edited October 21, 2016 by WildCard Quote

WildCard Posted October 21, 2016 Report Posted October 21, 2016 Atmosphere isn't rap, for the record Curious then, what is he? Quote
Hoss Posted October 21, 2016 Report Posted October 21, 2016 (edited) Curious then, what is he?They're hip hop. Not a knock or anything but they're not in the rap discussion for people like Vonnegut who probably would have a different view of rap if it was all like Atmosphere.I've heard a bunch of their stuff and like it, just don't listen by choice. Glad somebody brought them up. The line between rap and hip hop is a very grey one. A lot of people classified as rappers refer to what they do as hip hop artists (Common and Tupac, for instance, both claim to be hip hop artists, not rappers; Tupac did so inconsistently tho). But Atmosphere isn't the artist Kurt is talking about, methinks. Edited October 21, 2016 by Hoss Quote

qwksndmonster Posted October 21, 2016 Report Posted October 21, 2016 I've been listening to Coloring Book by Chance the Rapper pretty much non-stop for the past 4 months. Chance is fantastic, he's got great taste, and his music is much more optimistic than a lot of rap. He's also amazing at collaborating with other artists. I like every single feature on Coloring Book, even the J Biebs one. https://soundcloud.com/chancetherapper/sets/coloring-book Quote
WildCard Posted October 21, 2016 Report Posted October 21, 2016 Chance is one ofy favorite. His entire album Acid Rap is incredible Quote

Sabre Dance Posted October 24, 2016 Report Posted October 24, 2016 Selling England by the Pound is a pretty great album. You bet! I've compared the musical complexity of early Genesis with more "modern" music and there's no comparison. (But, if anyone knows of a contemporary group that compares to Gabriel-era Genesis, please let me know.) Quote
qwksndmonster Posted October 24, 2016 Report Posted October 24, 2016 I'm OBSESSED with this song/video right now. I've played these kinds of jams before, where somebody is so good that you and the other musicians are shooting each other looks with the thoughts "How good are they? How good do we sound right now?" Vulfpeck is a good funk group. They're at their best when they have a featured musician (like Blake Mills, the slide guitar player) or a singer. All their songs with gospel singer Antwaun Stanley are great. Quote
