They flew under my radar for years, but I recently discovered Lake Street Dive.  Anyone else like them?

By the way, you could spend an evening (and I have) listening to Lake Street Dive covering other band's songs.  They've done dozens, maybe hundreds, of covers and they're all excellent.

They changed the music on the casino floor again. Lots of good stuff so far. I've been hearing a lot of The Band, some Eagles, early No Doubt, Red Hot Chili Peppers. Lots of good stuff. But I draw the line at Cake. I first heard The Distance, 25 years ago. I hated it then, I hate it now. Their cover of I Will Survive, hate it! Short Skirt/Long Jacket, Hate! I bet I hear all 3 of them tonight. 1 down.

Update: 2 outta 3!

Nope. Worst pop tune ever.

Wrong on all accounts.

Certainly not a pop tune.  It was not stuck on there and not listed to get a hit.  The NME was doing a promo and needed a song very fast for it.  A freebee for the NME, very literally.  Mick came into the studio on the last day of the London Calling sessions and had Train in Vain for the NME.  They recorded in right then in one take.  This is not my opinion.  Mick and Paul were interviewed about it.  It's out there in the cobwebs of the interwebs.

That makes a great story, but I’m not sure I buy it. It’s a great way for them to sell out but keep their integrity by not selling out (ftr, I am not against anyone selling out, especially musicians, who usaullly never get paid enough for what they do.)

I don’t hate the Clash. I just hate that song.

I love The Clash.  I think everyone knows that.

That said, I kind of buy the notion that they sold out when they signed to CBS and ditched the small independant label that they were origionally signed to.  And Joe's grand plan to get out of the deal more quickly, by producing a double and then a triple album, backfired when they were told that they only count as one.  In the end they never fullfilled the CBS contract with new material, but with compilations.  So, there you go.

Rebuttal: Cake is groovy and hilarious.

I'm gonna pour one out for DMX tonight. Doesn't look like he's gonna make it. Definitely a major part of the playlist of my youth.

Do we have any other Arcade Fire fans in here? A pretty interesting band and about as much critical success as you can expect.

Every single studio album they’ve released has been nominated for a Grammy. The Suburbs is an all-time great album for me. And they’ve done a good amount of charity work, using their concerts to train people and raise a lot of money for Haiti relief (one of their members is Haitian).

There’s also a lot more coming from them. They’ve said they’ve got multiple albums worth of work to get to post-pandemic and have started working on the next album I believe.

RIP Shock G

Most people immediately think of The Humpty Dance or Doowutchyalike when they think of Digital Underground, but I think of this...

Yeesh, too young. Rest in peace.

(I always think of Parliament, particularly the Trombipulation album because I rarely ever listen to it, when hearing Digital Underground)

I love all the funk samples in their songs.

I listen to Shatners Hairpiece. In my head, I wrote a long and pretentious post about why it's like listening to the Grateful Dead, but I decided to spare you the details.

All I can say is that watching that little girl dance made my week.  It is soul-cleansing.

The little girl is my favorite interaction Shatner has with the Vancouver street scene, but it's not unique. There's some wonderful, and others terrible. The bickering over who gets what performing space kills me.

I have no idea who/what Shatner is.  Not really sure what's going on; I thought it was some random girl waiting for a bus with her dad.

I've got it bad for Rachael Price.  Her voice is so.... immediate.  Intimate.  In my head.  A month later and I'm still hooked on Lake Street Dive.  And it's not just her voice.  The arrangements on a lot of songs are actually pretty sparse, but every sound in there contributes.
