Bigthuder1636 Posted April 20, 2009 Report Posted April 20, 2009 Although the Sabres, especially under Reiger have never been anything close to aggressive in the FA or trade market, I get a different feeling from the Sabres this offseason. I think with the decision to keep Reiger and Ruff that means that some significant changes will be made to the roster. My question is what would you rather see happen. The Sabres make a big time move like dumping players to open up the cap room to make a serious run at Bouwmeester or something similar or make 4 to 6 quality changes to the room in the form of solid physical players that will change the atmoshpere of the team on the ice and in the room but might not add too much more as far as points than who you got rid of? I am just kind of interested to see what you guys think. I would like to see them make a big move. Something that really shows a different tack in the way they approach the personel on the team. Let me know what you think
VansTheMans Posted April 20, 2009 Report Posted April 20, 2009 This is similar to the poll I have running right now. Id like to see the Sabres take a more balanced approach; dump some finesse players, and find some more physical forwards. Adding one or two veteran forwards would really help this team mature. Having said that, it still would be worth it for the Sabres to look into signing Bouwmeester. A big UFA signing, and roster shake up would turn this team around quick.
Two or less Posted April 20, 2009 Report Posted April 20, 2009 All these threads seem to be almost the same. The big thing is, will they have the cap space or money to pull the trigger if an offer does come available. Regier needs to start trying to trade Hecht and Tallinder and maybe somebody else and then they can start thinking moves.

Let me know what you think My take is that the Sabres have enough talent, but not nearly enough heart/competitive spirit. They will have to lose some of that talent to get the balance in heart that they need, and they can do that while still improving the team. I'm also still convinced that Toni and Hank could garner something in the market (though not much alone, in a package). You hit the magic number in the 4 to 6 range as far as acquisitions, they will need to move someone with talent to make that many changes. We only have so many free agents, and no one want junk for good, heart filled players. Darcy has his work cut out for him. But it COULD be done, atleast in theory.
apuszczalowski Posted April 21, 2009 Report Posted April 21, 2009 With Regier in charge, don't expect much. expect more of the same. they will try to sell us that some rookies are ready for the big show, guys currently on the roster just had a bad year, and maybe 1-2 second tier guys will be brought in in hopes that they improve to their "potential"
FearTheReaper Posted April 21, 2009 Report Posted April 21, 2009 Something has to give. Management needs to reckonize that the team has several players holding them down that are suppose to play key roles on the team. Imagine this, instead of: Jochen Hecht-Brooks Laich
FearTheReaper Posted April 21, 2009 Report Posted April 21, 2009 Hecht is pretty much my scape goat on this roster. But for many reasons. Hes suppose to play a 2 way shut down role on the team. The only problem is,he has either lost the heart to play up his caliber of the the past. Or he simply doesn't care enough to do so. Either way,hes suppose to be a big part of this team. I think if they trade Jochen and perhaps a pick, prospect or Tallinder, with him, for a gritty top 6 forward,it not only will make us a better team,it will shake the room up alot. Hes one of the first players managment signed long term over the past 2 years. It would send a message,"just because you got the big contract doesn't mean your untouchable".

Maybe I'm just being dense or obtuse, but again I wonder how a threat of being traded makes an NHL player better.
VansTheMans Posted April 21, 2009 Report Posted April 21, 2009 Maybe I'm just being dense or obtuse, but again I wonder how a threat of being traded makes an NHL player better. It's not so much the threat, it's more of an alarm. When team mates around you are being shipped out for inconsistent play, one would assume at the very least it would wake the other players up. Let them know that the situation is serious. Management and coaching isn't just flapping their gums anymore; they're taking action.
darksabre Posted April 21, 2009 Report Posted April 21, 2009 How many of the top players on this team wouldn't care if they got traded?
VansTheMans Posted April 21, 2009 Report Posted April 21, 2009 How many of the top players on this team wouldn't care if they got traded? This question, which is fair to ask, speaks volumes about the team.

VansTheMans Posted April 21, 2009 Report Posted April 21, 2009 Would.it.matter. It'd make me feel better anyways
darksabre Posted April 21, 2009 Report Posted April 21, 2009 It'd make me feel better anyways  This we can agree on. My issue is, if the Sabres make a big move, does it really matter? Does it really "send a message"? But at the same time, if they don't ship someone out, does that send equally as powerful a message? That ownership doesn't care? I think management has to make a trade, not only to attempt to wake this team up, no matter how futile, but also to show that management itself is awake. When doing nothing may have the same effect as doing something, there is no reason to not do something.
FearTheReaper Posted April 22, 2009 Report Posted April 22, 2009 It'd make me feel better anyways  Nice.
