I completely agree...I'm just saying that they were a bit fortunate. Pittsburgh did away with the Capitals (albeit in 7 games), but not having to play the Bruins or Devils helped their cause.

Good post, personally I saw a Canes team that really looked like it had run out of gas. Yes Pens were good but they didn't run the Guantlet the canes had to go through in 2 seven game series against devils and bruins. Washington just traded chances not hits.

Just like to say, man, Hossa was on fire last night. Skating and stick handling around guys like they were standing still. Of all the guys that wanted the money, he's the only one that gets his wish.

Wonder where he plays next year?

yes he did however did you notice he looked to have hurt himself on his last shift there in OT where he tried that one time too many.. ..

As far as next year, I say he whores himself to the highest biddder....

Interesting foot note to this story is his refusal of the pens similar offer to play for detroit and a chance for the cup... Not quite sure and don't remember if Conklins situtation was same or he actually got allot more money...

Still makes for an interesting side story especially if they don't win it with detroit and could have by just staying put...

Actually fighting in the playoffs is way up....or at least I thought I heard that yesterday.

over 30 fighting majors in the playoffs this year.

X. shoots he scores.

39 according to hockeyfights.com http://www.hockeyfights.com/leaders/players/1/pos2009/1/t

It's up significantly from last year, when the numbers were very low, 14 I think. But 07-08 appears to be an aberration when compared to previous playoffs. (Haven't dissected all the numbers.)

According to the site, there were .60 fights per game this regular season (although the site's numbers are a little confusing -- go look and see what I mean http://www.hockeyfights.com/stats/). Fighting is still down in the playoffs (about .50 per game).

P.S. The point remains that last night's game sold itself. Not once did I say, "Man, I wish someone would drop the gloves."

Regular season Buffalo is 25th (with 37) out of 30 for fighting majors. Guess who's 30th? Detroit (11). Pansies. lol

I enjoyed the game. Loved Kane's goal, Huet's save and the play was hard and clean.

Hard to say whose backhander was better, Malkin's or Kane's. They were both diabolical. I'm trying to think of a good Versus word for them... X.?

Gotta give me some time for that one.

Just for fun: So, we have a repeat. In the major North American sports, how many have there been--back-to-back? I can think of a couple, but I haven't brainstormed it and exhausted the possibilities. The two I've got, off of the top of my head, are:

NFL: Buffalo and Dallas, 1993 and 1994.

NHL: Pittsburgh and Detroit, 2008 and 2009.

There are probably a few Lakers/Celtics repeats out there from the NBA, too. What else?

NHL: Isles - Eulers '83 & '84

Moe-ray-all - Baaaston '77 & '78

There are a ton of them pre-'70.

In baseball

Yanks - Dodgers '77-'78

Detroit - pittsburgh will hold the record for the least people giving a crap, though.

Funny you say that....a year ago, this was the best thing for hockey. Now we're all tired of hearing about Crosby, Malkin, Lemieux, and anything related to the Wings.

I listed out the most recent in ever sport over on TSW earlier in the week. The last one in pro sports before this was Bulls-Jazz in something like 97 and 98. But then again, that's not a real sport, so it doesn't count.

So, I wasn't watching back when Gretzky and Mario were playing and winning cups all the time.

Did people get sick of watching them?

It was hard to get sick of watching the Oilers in their dynasty.

There just wasn't enough cable TV to get sick of them and they were simply loaded.

The Pittsburgh teams that won the cup were never dominant quite like the Oilers, they

just seemed to get on Playoff runs and rolled after making tons of deadline moves.

And by then, Barasso was still good enough at the right times.

Those Pens teams were amazing at coming back in series. They were down 3 games to 1 to the Caps in 92, IMMSMC. Among other examples...

It seems to be a knack passed down through the generations in Pittsburgh. 2001. Argh. And this year again against Washington.

Absolutely correct. In fact, one could argue that a bit of luck is ESSENTIAL for a successful cup campaign...

That was funny!

I wasn't a Jazz fan, but I did want to see a major upset in both championships. The Bulls were stacked!

I miss watching the teamplay basketball that existed prior to this decade. I do not care for the NBA anymore. It has simply turned into a "one man show."

I hope Detroit sweeps the Penguins in 4. Does anybody really want to see Satan with the Cup over his head and his name later inscribed on it?

Which brings us to the list of former Sabres who've won the Cup...

I'm never tired of watching great hockey. The posts above are somewhat right; there wasn't the 24/7 sports coverage there is now, but the finals always were on tv in Buffalo.

I want Wings in 4. 3, preferably.
