TheMadCap Posted May 27, 2009 Report Posted May 27, 2009 Canes washed away in four... Nice..very nice... They were overmatched by a very young, fast team that basically beat the crap out of them physically. Another large problem was that they never really adjusted to the style of play that the Pens threw at them. The Pens essentially took away the center of the ice, forcing the Hurricanes to try and use the boards too much, where they just got pounded. We will see if Pittsburg can have success against another physical team like Detroit...

wonderbread Posted May 27, 2009 Report Posted May 27, 2009 Today, just a tropical depression. nice. How about just plain Depressed.
X. Benedict Posted May 27, 2009 Report Posted May 27, 2009 It doesn't quite jive with our raping and pillaging tendencies here....but I quite like it. For fun I was checking out their message boards and the arguments seem to be which fans are worse, Pittsburgh or Buffalo? They are ohh so delicate.

This is what I'm sayin', we gotta take advantage of the hate next season to really stick it to the Canes fans.
carpandean Posted May 27, 2009 Report Posted May 27, 2009 Anyone else notice that since we lost to the 'Canes in 2006, both teams have now had 1 ECF and 2 missed playoffs?
Guest Sloth Posted May 27, 2009 Report Posted May 27, 2009 Anyone else notice that since we lost to the 'Canes in 2006, both teams have now had 1 ECF and 2 missed playoffs? I prefer to look at the present. Carolina made their ECF this year, and the Sabres couldn't even make the playoffs. Canes are doing something right. All I can think about now is the hope Darcy and company will make a massive move, if it is even possible, this summer. I really don't think they'll even attempt a major move. That is why Buffalo will continue to struggle to make it into the playoffs...

Or look at the fact that since Dominik Hasek left town, Lindy has taken two teams to the conference finals, while the Canes have made the finals twice, winning one Cup. Not sure what point carp is trying to make, but if it's that the two franchises are on the same level... no way.
Buffalo Wings Posted May 28, 2009 Report Posted May 28, 2009 Maybe so, but you have to play who you have to play, and Pittsburg has beaten some good teams to get to the finals. They completely shut down the Hurricanes who were playing some of the best hockey in the league up to that point. Pittsburg has the advantage of youth and speed on offense, and they play fantastic defense allowing very few prime scoring chances. Against the Hurricanes (I hate the shortened version "Canes", reminds me of Miami), the Pens were just too fast, and were clearly the quicker team, as evident by the nearly endless fast break opportunities in the transition game. Their guys are also very big and physical, and essentially, are everything the Sabres are not. I completely agree...I'm just saying that they were a bit fortunate. Pittsburgh did away with the Capitals (albeit in 7 games), but not having to play the Bruins or Devils helped their cause.

Carolina played in a division against the little sisters of the poor for 10 years and have only broken 90 pts 4 of those years. Which player do we take away from them? Anyway, the shame is that they are so close.
nucci Posted May 28, 2009 Report Posted May 28, 2009 What kind of schedule is this for Cup Finals? 3 games in 4 nights? http://www.cbssports.com/nhl/story/11793702

X. Benedict Posted May 28, 2009 Report Posted May 28, 2009 That division has two Stanley cups in those same 10 years. oof! I think when Tampa won it, they were the only team in the division close to a winning record.

Anyway, the shame is that they are so close. You wouldn't take Carolina's success since 2001 over the Sabres'? You wouldn't trade two conference final losses for one Cup final loss, one Cup and one conference final loss? Sure, the Canes had the worst record in hockey in 2002-03, after making the finals. I think that's a problem with a lot of Sabre fans. They're horrified of TRULY sucking. Mediocrity suits us. See Ruff, Lindy. And Regier, Darcy. Didn't faze the Canes. They went out and drafted Eric Staal and had a Stanley Cup three years later.
Stoner Posted May 28, 2009 Report Posted May 28, 2009 I think when Tampa won it, they were the only team in the division close to a winning record. Non-sequitur?
Stoner Posted May 28, 2009 Report Posted May 28, 2009 Hawks-Wings was a fabulous game last night. Who needs goals? And who needs fights? We have the debate once or twice a year. A lot of people argue that fighting is a NECESSARY part of the game. Protect the stars, release the tension to avoid true mayhem, etc. Nonsense. Fighting is all about making meaningless regular season games entertaining for the segment of the fan base that likes it. I ask again: why isn't fighting needed in the playoffs? Easy answer: the game sells itself.
X. Benedict Posted May 28, 2009 Report Posted May 28, 2009 Non-sequitur? SE Div. has been the weakest in the last 10 years top to bottom. That's my bias. It has been an easy division to come out of.

Mbossy Posted May 28, 2009 Report Posted May 28, 2009 Just like to say, man, Hossa was on fire last night. Skating and stick handling around guys like they were standing still. Of all the guys that wanted the money, he's the only one that gets his wish. Wonder where he plays next year?

But that really has nothing to do with winning a Cup eh? The suggestion that Carolina and Tampa won their division because the division was weak is destroyed by the fact they won their league!

But I think it is an advantage when you can go into the playoffs not getting beat up all year to get there. This might be way off.....but I seem to remember that Tampa's top 10 scorers missed a total of 10 games total from the start of the season to the cup.
