carpandean Posted April 7, 2009 Report Posted April 7, 2009 Sorry, Carp, but the first period, which definitely was in the first 58 mins, featured the Sabres swarming around Osgood like bees. It was great to watch, and by 15 mins in, the Sabres had 13 SOG. Shame that nothing went in. You're right. I'll give them all props for a strong first period. Like others here, I had that feeling of "man, we needed to bury some of those, because you can't just stay even against Detroit, especially when you are outplaying them." From the second on and especially once they were down by two, I'll stand by my original reasoning.
carpandean Posted April 7, 2009 Report Posted April 7, 2009 After the start to the season Rivet had, he pretty much disappeared to until a few weeks ago. I was quite unimpressed by most of his play all year. I guess playing with and being surrounded by so many pansies will turn you into one yourself. He was, at least, one of the few guys that realized that your intensity is actually supposed to go up down the stretch.
Eleven Posted April 7, 2009 Report Posted April 7, 2009 38 seasons of loyal support from the smallest NHL market in the U.S., yet 0 Stanley Cups and loads of embarrasment in return. The hockey meccas of Anaheim, Dallas, Tampa Bay, and Carolina have all experienced Stanley Cup victories, with San Jose and Washington DC sure to follow before Buffalo ever does. It makes me fu_cking sick to my stomach. Fu_ck Larry Quinn. Fu_ck Darcy Regier. And fu_ck Gary Bettman. Maybe I'm flooded with psychological optimism after this season definitely crashed tonight, but here are some hockey hotbeds: Toronto--not in my lifetime. Minneapolis/Saint Paul--hockey mad, and never. Saint Louis--believe it or not, they LOVE them some hockey in that part of Mizzou, and never. (Seriously, Saint Louis is a great hockey city.) Vancouver--never. Quebec--never, and they lost their team! Winnipeg--see Quebec, but it's even worse. Ottawa--not in the modern era, if ever. And then, there are the bandwagoners (just among hockey cities, and I'm giving Chicago and Boston a break here): Chicago: Not in my lifetime. Boston: Barely in my lifetime. Detroit: Yep, they've won a few, but do you remember just how bad that team was in the 70s, 80s, and early 90s? And they act like they invented it? Hilarious. Philadelphia: Even funnier than Detroit, because their fans think that they're as tough as the 1975 team was. And the last time they won it, I was 4 (but I still have a ticket stub!). Calgary has consistently put good teams on the rink. But it's been 20 years. Montreal, over 15. It's not easy to win a Cup, and the best-laid plans don't always work (witness the Rangers in the late 90s, or the '07 Sabres, for that matter). This isn't the NFL. I'm okay with being a Sabres fan after writing that. And I'd be with you on cursing Bettman, but thanks to him, I don't have to go to Hamilton to watch NHL hockey, you know?
LabattBlue Posted April 7, 2009 Report Posted April 7, 2009 The crowd was uninspired tonight and I don't blame them one bit. Take Kaleta out of the line lineup and there is no hitting at all. This game didn't look any different from one played in October. No intensity, no enthusiasm, no willingness to do the little things that make a difference. What a joke.
SabreInFla Posted April 7, 2009 Report Posted April 7, 2009 He was, at least, one of the few guys that realized that your intensity is actually supposed to go up down the stretch. The two things that come to mind when I watch the guy are slow and old. I had much higher hopes for the guy. I'd rather keep Spacek.
