Most Buffalo fans are constantly beaten down about how they never win/their city sucks that just sounding like your team matters is enough. Want to sell tickets next year Larry? Do something unexpected like signing the Sedins.

rickshaw Posted March 24, 2009 Report Posted March 24, 2009 The Sedins aren't going to Buffalo. If they don't re-sign for Vancouver, which I believe they will at a hometown discount of $6 million each, then they are going to the man who drafted them. Brian Burke and the Leafs. The player the Sabres should look at is Mattius Ohlund. He's free to go this summer and he is still very effective, but the Canucks probably won't have enough $$ to sign him. He is nastier than anyone we currently have on our blue line. While not mean, he does what is needed.

Via a trade or letting free agents sign somewhere else and not matching, etc..

You do the addition and subtraction of players and their salaries, obviously without knowing market value of free agents this summer use last years numbers as a reference........so who do you get rid of, who do you add?2008 Buffalo Sabres Salaries Player Salary Salary Cap Number Thomas Vanek $8,000,000 $7,143,000 Jochen Hecht $3,800,000 $3,525,000 Derek Roy $3,500,000 $4,000,000 Maxim Afinogenov $3,500,000 $3,333,000 Tim Connolly $3,500,000 $2,900,000 Craig Rivet $3,500,000 $3,500,000 Ryan Miller $3,500,000 $2,667,000 Jaroslav Spacek $3,300,000 $3,333,000 Toni Lydman $3,150,000 $2,875,000 Henrik Tallinder $2,900,000 $2,562,000 Ales Kotalik $2,500,000 $2,333,000 Paul Gaustad $1,700,000 $2,300,000 Jason Pominville $1,375,000 $1,033,000 Teppo Numminen $1,100,000 $1,100,000 Patrick Lalime $1,000,000 $1,000,000 Drew Stafford $984,000 $984,000 Dan Paille $900,000 $1,125,000 Nathan Gerbe $850,000 $585,000 Nathan Paetsch $800,000 $850,000 Adam Mair $750,000 $758,000 Andrej Sekera $659,000 $675,000 Mike Weber $551,000 $16,000 Andrew Peters $550,000 $525,000 Clarke MacArthur $522,000 $522,000 Mark Mancari $522,000 $42,000 Patrick Kaleta $500,000 $492,000 Matt Ellis $475,000 $82,000 Total $54,388,000 $50,260,000 You're forgeting about the raises Pominville, Miller, and Connolly already have coming.
rickshaw Posted March 24, 2009 Report Posted March 24, 2009 Yeah, thats what we need, two more soft players. Please it will NEVER happen for salary reasons and I don't want it to happen for other reasons. They are talented, but soft and we have enough of those. The Sedins are not soft. They go to the net better than most on the current Sabres roster. They are very difficult at getting knocked off the puck. They are very durable as well. Are they bruisers? No. But they are not soft. I'd say they are medium. Not soft, not hard.
will Posted March 24, 2009 Report Posted March 24, 2009 ...But they are not soft. I'd say they are medium. Not soft, not hard. so you're saying they're semi'?
VansTheMans Posted March 24, 2009 Report Posted March 24, 2009 If Detroit fails to resign Marian Hossa, Id love for the Sabres to take a run at him in the offseason. Trade Hecht and Tallinder away to clear up space(maybe even Lydman as well), deal Connolly to Colombus if need be in return for a d-man, and land a game changing dynamic forward this summer in free agency. There's some notable veteran forwards available as reasonably cheap UFA's this summer as well. Mike Knuble (2.8 Million) and Peter Sykora (2.5 Million) come to mind.
deluca67 Posted March 24, 2009 Report Posted March 24, 2009 The only thing I expect from the front office all off-season is excuses. They have already started and I would expect it to continue through the summer. <_<

That will be followed by we are a young team, blah, blah, blah...
bleedblueandgold Posted March 24, 2009 Report Posted March 24, 2009 We all know they dont like to make free agent signings........they'll say something to the effect of, with the maturity of Sekera, Weber, Butler and a couple of the guys in Portland, and a healthy Miller next year..... our roster will be all set for next year..... :death: The only surprise we may get is we sign an average player (like when we signed Hecht, Spacek) and hope for them to overachieve in our "system". Sinking even lower into mediocrity....... :wallbash:

The guy is versatile and tough. Not to mention seems to score against the Sabres each night. Can't see how the Flyers can retain him.

Can't see how the Flyers can retain him. The Flyers will do whatever they want they have a GM not afraid to sit on his hands. They draft well and bring up good prospects. They are the "New" "New NHL" model franchise. Their only mistake was signing Briere to so much $$ but then again. He is producing for them when he plays and they still win when he is out.

inkman Posted March 24, 2009 Report Posted March 24, 2009 Isn't this thread like me asking what supermodels available?
carpandean Posted March 24, 2009 Report Posted March 24, 2009 The Flyers will do whatever they want they have a GM not afraid to sit on his hands. They draft well and bring up good prospects. They are the "New" "New NHL" model franchise. Their only mistake was signing Briere to so much $$ but then again. He is producing for them when he plays and they still win when he is out. They will be letting good talent go over the next two years because of Danny's contract. They are at the cap this year and the only contract of any real size that is expiring is Knuble's (Hatcher, too, but he's been on LTIR for a long time.) Both of their goaltenders, who were making a combine $4.75 million, are UFAs this summer, so signing one of them to a starter's contract and bringing in a backup will require an increase in cap hit. Even if they get their goaltenders for the same cost and bring up kids, they would be over the $56 million cap mark (assume Rathje doesn't come back; worse off if he does) next year without re-signing Knuble. That means that someone will have to go just to get under the cap, which is expected to be around $55 million. With a realistic starting goaltender salary, it will likely have to be somebody with a substantial contract. The year after that, the only contract with any value that comes off of their books is Jones', but Braydon Coburn will be a RFA and will likely get a big raise. As such, their cap hit will likely be close to the $55 million mark again. Problem is that the cap is expected to drop a lot, possibly to below $50 million. Unless they can sucker someone into taking Danny's contract (unlikely given cap/salary and injuries), they will be forced to trade away some of their great young players. They have a very strong core with Richards, Carter, Gagner, Hartnell and Timonen all locked up for several more years. Unfortunately, when you add in Danny's contract, they will be forced to carry a thin roster in every other spot, possibly including goaltender, and may have to trade away one or two of those guys to get under the cap in two years. Sure, they look good now, but they are in as much trouble as anyone when the cap falls. They will not be doing whatever they want and, in fact, will likely be doing a lot of things that they don't want. Without Briere, they could build a team that could be a contender for several years; with his contract, they will likely have to rip it apart.
wonderbread Posted March 24, 2009 Report Posted March 24, 2009 time will tell Carp. Either way I would like to be wrong and have you say "told you so".

Given Knuble's age and contract status--he's likely to walk. That said, yes, it is like Ink listing supermodels. The Sabres won't be in the running for him. Flyers prospects--Carter and Richards--took the next step in the NHL. Other than Vanek, the Sabres prospects have leveled off or regressed. No wondering why they sit on the outside looking in once again.
