Revisiting Ruff's ultimatum

After the loss to Washington on December 30:

?We?ll take them out of the lineup. Some of them will come out. That?s not an idle threat, either. If you don?t want to compete, if Matt Ellis wants to compete harder and Adam Mair wants to compete harder, then we?ll play the guys that want to compete harder. Then they can make a decision if they want to compete hard. That?s the only fair thing to do.?

This is the night Paul Gaustad said, ?Everybody has to hold each other accountable. This is unacceptable for our team,? Paul Gaustad said. ?We are going to fix it. It?s going to start from the players. The coaches have given us the right game plan and we need to execute it. It?s on us. It?s on our shoulders. It?s the players? fault tonight.?

The next day, Lindy rearranged the deck chairs on the Titanic, rearranging the stalls in the lockerroom.

Yet another example of someone in this organisation who talks a good game, yet does little to follow it up with action.

Ruff has benched Vanek a couple of times during games, yet Train Wrecks 1 & 2 (Pommer and Hecht) have sucked up minutes as usual, without showing a shred of improvement.

That said, what can he do? It's not like he can call up Portland and play the kids instead, he's stuck with what he's got unless someone gets hurt.

He could start kneecapping his players.

Not much Lindy can do once Regier steered the Titanic into the iceberg.

If people want to say Lindy has to go that is fine. There is no way in hell he should go before Regier. I strongly believe if a new GM came in from the outside and purged about half the roster this could be a playoff team next year. Despite the recent showing they do have some pieces in place. The Sabres are like the Frankenstein monster. They have the head, body, arms and legs. They just need a new GM to come in and attach the brain, heart and balls.

I think he should have done this a while ago but better late than never... scratch Hecht, Pomminstein, Tallinder and Lydman and play Ellis, MacArthur, Numminen and Paetsch. what is the worst than can happen?... we blow a two goal lead and lose? ;)

but that won't happen... as my brother pointed out to me before, Ruff probably won't scratch a player with the C or an A on their sweater. If you remember correctly, he was scratched when he was the captain of the Sabres and that started a lot of crap and led to him leaving. I don't think he'll do that to a guy when he knows how that feels.

...and then this ultimatum was followed by the multi-hour marathon meeting that was held in the last month or so. It's not working. It doesn't matter how much anyone likes Ruff. If they miss the playoffs, Ruff and Regier should go and there needs to be a major player shakeup. When I say major, I don't mean letting the UFA's go and replacing them with Gerbe, Kennedy and Weber. There are no untradeable players when your team misses the playoffs 5 out of 7 years. Everyone is in play.

In Lindy's defense they did go on a tear in January. Unfortunately it seems every time we go through a stretch where we play well, they start to forget what they're doing right and the bad habits and laziness start to set in again. They get cute with the puck. They don't do the dirty work in the corners any more.

Obviously, the musical chairs bit didn't work. Ruff's expression in the middle of the third period was of one who was concious of his own mortality after surviving much longer than any other coach. He hasn't won a cup all this time so what's the point in continuing? Just to be a bit better than ok? The man is dignified, unlike any of the players, and if he isn't fired, I believe he will fall on his sword. Nothing will reach these guys and there has to be an overhaul with the players, coaches and management this offseason. A fresh start is needed with real leaders and much tougher players.

Interesting quote from BN after Lindy had a closed-door session with the team for 15 minutes after the game:

"The message [from Ruff] we can't really talk about right here," said defenseman Henrik Tallinder. "It was not really good words."

Can't really talk about right here? Need to play harder, can't take lazy penalties, stop being cute; these are all things that they could talk about. So, that makes me wonder what they couldn't talk about. Did Lindy say that if they continue like this, he's done at the end of the year? Did he say that players would be gone? These are the only types of things that I could see not being able to talk about.

i think you're putting a level of intellectual sophistication onto hank that just isn't there -- i suspect it was a garden variety, profanity-laced, red-in-the-face-and-scalp tirade about a lack of commitment, work ethic, intensity, etc., and that tallinder avoided talking about the issues by citing the salty language that was used.

Yeah, I just watched Tallinders interview and it's pretty clear that he was referring to the language used. My bad.

This team hasn't done any dirty work since the Ted Nolan days. The only reason they were successful in 05-06 and 06-07 was because of the wide open play in the "new" NHL.

That's the best line I think I've seen. Ever. I'm going to make it a point to use it at my 4:00 planning meeting... somehow, I'll find a way.
