LabattBlue Posted March 9, 2009 Report Posted March 9, 2009 Kind of surprised by the move. They were 5-2 in their last 7 games and just got Tanguay back form a lengthy injury.
Two or less Posted March 9, 2009 Report Posted March 9, 2009 Didn't work for the NYR, it won't work for Montreal.
FearTheReaper Posted March 9, 2009 Report Posted March 9, 2009 What a joke. I quess the habs struggling has nothing to do with the poor play of Price and Kovalev?
SabresFan526 Posted March 9, 2009 Report Posted March 9, 2009 Kind of surprising. Didn't really see that coming considering how close Gainey and Carbo are. I think the play of Price and Kovalev compounded by the tremendous amount of injuries they have been going through this year has more to do with their on ice performance than anything Carbo has or has not done. I'd say a very different situation than in NYR where I think more of the blame could be placed on Renney. Carbo really has an excuse in terms of injuries here. Just looks like the Montreal pressure cooker got to Gainey to the point where he felt he had to make a move. Oh well.
Stoner Posted March 9, 2009 Report Posted March 9, 2009 Crystal clear message. You don't win, the coach gets fired. No one is regretting it in Pittsburgh. (And thanks TW for not gloating -- yet.) We'll see if "stability" makes the playoffs.

(And thanks TW for not gloating -- yet.) We'll see if "stability" makes the playoffs. Pittsburgh is in 8th place with two of the biggest names in the sport. Sure their on a bit of a hot streak right now, but so was Buffalo just a few weeks ago and we looked safe.
R_Dudley Posted March 10, 2009 Report Posted March 10, 2009 Bottom line is they're going to have to play a step better than they are doing right now. I'm starting to wonder if you eat microphone like a hot dog and what the best condiments go with that. And another ones gone and another ones gone, another one bites the dust.... Wow didn't see that coming either, A Jack Adams winner w an overall record not that bad combined 124-83-23 however this comment caught my eye ... "There were certain games when I had a real confusion about the overall ... it showed up as effort, but I felt like it was emotional engagement to a game," said Gainey. "Our team (did) not seem to be emotionally engaged." Hmmm,,, Have I seen that kind of play before
sabresnutinphoenix Posted March 10, 2009 Report Posted March 10, 2009 Amazing...The Canadiens would make the playoffs if they were today...Will the Sabres ever consider this for Lindy?...RIght now we are in a tailspin? Why isn't anyone ever calling for Lindy to be dumped?

"Our team (did) not seem to be emotionally engaged." Hmmm,,, Have I seen that kind of play before  I've seen that kind of move by a GM before, in New Jersey. Twice. I'm really surprised by this. Montreal is talented, but that team isn't so out-of-this-world that 5th place should be a badge of shame, especially considering that with Boston playing as well as they have, Montreal can do no better than 4th (and Montreal is only 3 points out of 4th). With the 21-year-old in net, what did Gainey expect? If anything, Gainey should reconsider his own failure to deal Kovalev, who is the only player in my memory to be benched and left home for a road trip within two weeks of being named MVP of the all-star game. (Or maybe the heat between Carbonneau and Kovalev reached the boiling point, and Carbonneau lost. Not unheard of in sports.)
Buffalo Wings Posted March 10, 2009 Report Posted March 10, 2009 Does everyone try to imitate Lou Lamoriello? Fire the coach with less than 20 games left to get momentum for the playoffs? I don't know what's happening in Montreal or Pittsburgh to know if it's anything like that, but the Rangers were clearly on the downswing and probably were going to miss the playoffs, anyway.
Stoner Posted March 10, 2009 Report Posted March 10, 2009 The Canadiens were projected to win the Stanley Cup... was Buffalo? Sure they were. In 06-07, they were considered a very serious contender. Ruff didn't even get the Sabres all that close.
Two or less Posted March 10, 2009 Report Posted March 10, 2009 Sure they were. In 06-07, they were considered a very serious contender. Ruff didn't even get the Sabres all that close. They won the Presidents trophy. Montreal is fighting for a playoff spot and Carbo has lost several key players.... not sure if you read sportsnet or tsn but several players are known to be out in the party scene on game nights and the infamous picture of carey price smoking 5 cigarettes at once.... Montreal has been on life support.

Two or less Posted March 10, 2009 Report Posted March 10, 2009 Partying before or after? :) Sabres party, and they have their own infamous photo. Not sure what the point is. Don't fool yourself, Sabres don't party like this Montreal does. Players showing little respect to the organization is the point. Sabres were winning games and were way in first. Montreal enjoys the lifestyle of being legends but results are not there. It's disrespectful and they have zoned out the coach.

carpandean Posted March 10, 2009 Report Posted March 10, 2009 When were the Sabres on a "hot streak?" October?
Two or less Posted March 10, 2009 Report Posted March 10, 2009 When were the Sabres on a "hot streak?" They went 9-4 in the month of January and started pretty well in February. Obviously they could have done better, I am not debating that. But after January, they were flirting with the 4th seed in the East with Philadelphia and Montreal. They needed those teams to go cold to catch up but they were playing good hockey in the month of January. Even the loses to the Red Wings and Flames, they were in it. Red Wings they should have gotten rocked, but remained close until final minutes, and Flames was as good of a game it gets through 2 periods. After January, and then winning 5-0 vs. Toronto and beating Montreal in the first week after, Sabres looked like the playoffs were definitely in our sights.

They started January 4-0 and have been trading wins and loses since. That's not a hot streak. Maybe by this teams standard it is. The did play well against the Wings for about 50 minutes. There is no column in the standings for partial efforts or moral victories. At least not yet.
K-9 Posted March 10, 2009 Report Posted March 10, 2009 Sure they were. In 06-07, they were considered a very serious contender. Ruff didn't even get the Sabres all that close. Well, they DID reach the ECF. No it's not game 7 of the finals but it ain't exactly not having a chance to get there either. GO SABRES!!!
carpandean Posted March 10, 2009 Report Posted March 10, 2009 There is no column in the standings for partial efforts or moral victories. At least not yet. Isn't that what the OTL column is for? "The other team got the win, but you played a good game, so here's a point."
