FogBat Posted March 4, 2009 Report Posted March 4, 2009 They just brought up a good point on TSN. That potential Kotalik-Souray powerplay point combo in Edmonton could be very scary (in terms of SHGs too). That's if Kotalik can benefit from a change of scenery. Otherwise, given what everyone else has said on this thread, we might as well have fared much better than the Oilers. If that's the case, there's some poetic justice that can be found in all of this: considering that Darcy bit the bullet a couple of years ago and matched the offer sheet that Kevin Lowe put on Vanek, if the trade is a bust for Edmonton, our revenge will be sweet.

The potential of a Kotalik-Souray point really has nothing to do with him suddenly playing a more physical game.
FearTheReaper Posted March 4, 2009 Report Posted March 4, 2009 Thank the hockey gods!!! The sabres have just dumped 225 lbs of dead weight. Holy hell, that is better than resigning Connolly.
SabresFan526 Posted March 4, 2009 Report Posted March 4, 2009 I think I'm okay with this deal. I'm one of the few people who likes Kotalik. I'm not a huge fan, but I like what he can bring in terms of the slapshot, powerplay, and shootouts. He certainly is not an all around player, but the few things he does, he does them pretty well, but makes you wish for me. And, he doesn't cost a lot of money given what he brings. In the end, I like the fact the Sabres got something for Kotalik and received a 2nd round pick even though they gave up a 2nd round pick for Dominic Moore to Toronto. I'll take the trade of Kotalik for Dominic Moore as I think the Sabres got better in that tradeoff. I just hope that the Sabres can continue to do well on the PP and do not take any games to the shootout because they are losing a real shootout threat in Kotalik.
nucci Posted March 4, 2009 Report Posted March 4, 2009 What exactly is the problem with this move? They moved an underachieving forward - who is quickly turning into a one-trick pony - in a position of depth (winger) to get the second round pick that they used to fill a position of need (center depth). What's not to like? Don't bother . Some just need to complain. I like the moves today. A little nervous about Connolly but that's normal.
carpandean Posted March 4, 2009 Report Posted March 4, 2009 Great. Can't wait to see them miss the playoffs by 3 points :wallbash: Even if you assume that Kotalik's replacement misses every shot that Kotalik would have made and that Kotalik making it would change a loss into a win, we would have to lose (not just get into) five SOs in the last 19 games to estimate Kotalik getting us three points (he scores at roughly 60%.) Realistically, though, that one extra goal in what would have been a loss, really makes it more like 50/50 that you win (loss becomes a tie), so we'd have to lose at least 8 shootouts (more like 10, considering his replacement will score some times) before I'd say that there is any chance that not having Kotalik cost us three points. Plus, you have to assume that swapping Moore in for Kotalik doesn't increase our chances of winning in regulation/OT, which would be hard to believe.
matter2003 Posted March 4, 2009 Report Posted March 4, 2009 Or the fat kid with the thick glasses and the high water pants. Kotalik just said "like the fat girl with the glasses playing dodgeball----I'm out!"
matter2003 Posted March 4, 2009 Report Posted March 4, 2009 After letting the day stew in my head for awhile I still cant believe the players that were had for such low prices...And then I look at what we recieved and what we gave up and it boggles my mind even more..Granted the Sabres had a solid day and they addressed a couple of needs and they did ok..But they coulda had a GREAT day...Guerin and Jokinen were absolutley given away..I would even have to say that the Rangers did pretty good in getting Morris..All three could have easily been dealt here and we had more than enough to get them which is surprising to me..The lack of foresight and determination to put the best team out on the ice has me irritated to say the least.. :wallbash: Guerin still had a no trade clause that he would have had to waive---doubt he would have waived it to come to a team that missed the playoffs all together last year...
FearTheReaper Posted March 4, 2009 Report Posted March 4, 2009 I officially dont have to yell "HIT HIM" on the tv to Kotalik anymore. '' Now if we could only dump Tallinder and Max
carpandean Posted March 4, 2009 Report Posted March 4, 2009 Cap with Moore @ $2.5 million per: Assuming we bring up some kids and re-sign Sekera, Stafford and Kaleta for a total of $5.25 million. Getting rid of Talinder and replacing him with someone making ~$1 million would drop both the salary and cap to about $55 million. I don't expect the Sabres to go that high, but who knows.
Swedesessed Posted March 5, 2009 Report Posted March 5, 2009 Don't bother . Some just need to complain. I like the moves today. A little nervous about Connolly but that's normal. So I guess since I am not in love with the moves today, that means I just need to complain. Expressing displeasure = NEEDING to complain. Got it.
deluca67 Posted March 5, 2009 Report Posted March 5, 2009 Kotalik was a good a Sabre who never lived up to his big shot or fan expectations. He is a modern day Paul Cyr. Just a little bit better.
Chief Enabler Posted March 5, 2009 Report Posted March 5, 2009 Kotalik was a good a Sabre who never lived up to his big shot or fan expectations. He is a modern day Paul Cyr. Just a little bit better. I admit he was quality Sabre, living up to expectations around here are few and far between. Mostly good memories to his credit. Career stats were decent over tenure with a fair salary, IMO. Considering Mancari is a carbon copy, and hopefully we get a top 50 draft out of it, fair enough. Thanks Al!

You mean Toronto gets a top 50 pick out of it?
Chief Enabler Posted March 5, 2009 Report Posted March 5, 2009 You mean Toronto gets a top 50 pick out of it? I read that wrong? Dominic for the second rounder? Now I'm pissed. He strikes me as a poor mans Stu Barnes.....
bottlecap Posted March 5, 2009 Report Posted March 5, 2009 g'bye Take-a-Leak. That's one less one-dimensional player to sponge off this directionless organization.
X. Benedict Posted March 5, 2009 Report Posted March 5, 2009 They just brought up a good point on TSN. That potential Kotalik-Souray powerplay point combo in Edmonton could be very scary (in terms of SHGs too). that's a thought....
Taro T Posted March 5, 2009 Report Posted March 5, 2009 Kotalik was a good a Sabre who never lived up to his big shot or fan expectations. He is a modern day Paul Cyr. Just a little bit better. Ales was/is what he is; a big guy that doesn't play big very often but has a great slapper when fed (cough, cough, Connolly) and is deadly in the SO. That said, Paul Cyr was, is, and forever will be a bum. I was not sad when we got rid of that dead weight. I liked Donnelly a lot more and am impressed w/ how the draft pick swap in that trade worked out as well. Kotalik, while being no JP Dumont, is not a Paul Cyr either.
Two or less Posted March 5, 2009 Report Posted March 5, 2009 Ill only miss him on shoot outs That's the only advantage we had with Kotalik. He's been stopped two shootouts in a row so he's starting to show he's becoming useless in those too.
carpandean Posted March 6, 2009 Report Posted March 6, 2009 Kotalik is off to a fine start in Edmonton: 0G, 0A, 0P, -3 against the Sens. He does have two hits, though ...
