Spudz Posted March 5, 2009 Report Posted March 5, 2009 I'm still skeptical with this team. Too many up and downs and that wont cut it this time of the year. No more losses like the islanders. They need to keep this effort against phx and continue to ottawa, then we'll see how they plan on closing. But great effort tonight. They deserved this win. Max's effort really stood out. I hope it pays out for him with some points.
FogBat Posted March 5, 2009 Report Posted March 5, 2009 Well, that sucked. Lalime deserved one, the way he's played. I can't wait for Miller to get back, but no one can say that Lalime has let the team down so far. The guy's playing like a beast! Glad we got rid of T-Bo.
SabresFan526 Posted March 5, 2009 Report Posted March 5, 2009 Man, I really wanted that shutout for Lalime. He deserved it. He was the best player on this team, especially during the first period. Anyone who is concerned about the Sabres goaltending situation with Miller out should not be concerned as Lalime has been absolutely fantastic since coming in for Miller. It's too bad the Sabres couldn't score in the first 3 games of the Lalime era. Overall, I felt the Sabres played really well tonight. People might say the Sabres came out flat out tonight, but I really didn't see that tonight. What I saw was Montreal winning all of the puck battles and just playing really well at the start, but not because the Sabres were bad, but Montreal was really good, but Lalime was one better the whole night. As for the scoring, where has this been? All of the guys who scored have been here and not injured, so it's not like they didn't have this in them. Regardless of whether he scores or not, it just seems like the Sabres are a more confident team with Vanek in the lineup than without him as you saw this output tonight. I have to say, I was really impressed with Max tonight. The turnovers were few and he was absolutely fantastic defensively. I cannot believe I said that as Max has been such a terrible minus player, but he played really well defensively tonight. I'm happy for him to get this second chance and play really well tonight. I hope it can continue for him for the rest of the season. Overall, a good 12 hours for the Sabres, let's hope they can carry the momentum forward. The Sabres started out really well after the trade deadline last year against Nashville in a blowout, but they didn't make the playoffs. Let's hope this year they carry the momentum against Phoenix and into the rest of the season.
BamBam Posted March 5, 2009 Report Posted March 5, 2009 I'm a big fan of "Attitude Reflects Leadership" and heading into the final part of the schedule I'd like to see the A's taken away from Hecht and Pommer and given to Timmy and Vanek, or Timmy and Goose.

This was a nice win coming off the weekend and the long team meeting. The question is how long will this last? Will this continue into the playoff push they need or will they come out next game flat?
PromoTheRobot Posted March 5, 2009 Report Posted March 5, 2009 Well, that sucked. Lalime deserved one, the way he's played. I can't wait for Miller to get back, but no one can say that Lalime has let the team down so far. I hope those who were declaring Lalime a bust after one game realize that goalies need playing time to get into a groove. Being a backup means a career of inconsistency. Keep that in mind the next time we feel like declaring somebody stinks after one game. PTR
rickshaw Posted March 5, 2009 Report Posted March 5, 2009 I think he was expecting a harder shot initially and he just overplayed the puck to the wrong guy. He knew it right away. He played terrific tonight as honestly, they were dominated in the first 12 mins or so. If not for Lalime, this is not a good night for Sabre fans. Congrats to Lalime for his first EVER win at HSBC.

He was a one time starter who played himself out of the league. Despite the record the Sabres have played well in front of him keeping the shots to the outside and the scoring chances to a minimum. Tonight the Habs played a horrible game and the Sabres took advantage.

PTR I really liked how Stafford and Spacek were pissed when Lalime lost the shutout. That's a great sign for this team going forward with him in net. Also great to ses Max come out and play his ass off like he did. Say what you will about the guy, but he always plays that way even though the results never materialize for him.
LabattBlue Posted March 5, 2009 Report Posted March 5, 2009 Game thoughts... -Sabres with a really poor start(18-3 shots on goal at one point), but the first goal seemed to turn the game around. -Max coming back and not being "Stupid Max". Kept his shifts short, played decent without the puck, not many turnovers that I can remember and didn't overdo it in the offensive zone. How long before "Stupid Max" makes a reappearance? -Lalime with another very good effort. I am shocked at how well he has played. -That was the Gaustad everyone loved as a rookie. Doled out several big hits and chipped in with a timely goal. -The Marlboro Man looked rejuvenated. Note to Lindy...maybe it would be a good thing to rest him down the stretch every 10 days or so. -Nice job on the PK tonight after a disastrous month or so. -Paille driving to the net twice! -What happened to Cary Price the savior who was going to lead the Habs to the Cup this year? -Spacek with a solid game and a nice goal, but he was caught standing around and watching on the goal to spoil the shutout. GO SABRES!
shrader Posted March 5, 2009 Report Posted March 5, 2009 Those early struggles may have been the best thing that could have happened to this team. Lalime told them that he can take care of his part of the deal, so they have to loosen up a bit and start pushing offensively.
wonderbread Posted March 5, 2009 Report Posted March 5, 2009 But really, I have to mention that beer, pizza, and hockey, it doesn't get much better than this. Have your cake and it it to my friend! slluurrpp!
nfreeman Posted March 5, 2009 Report Posted March 5, 2009 This was a nice win coming off the weekend and the long team meeting. The question is how long will this last? Will this continue into the playoff push they need or will they come out next game flat? Good post. This has been the problem for Team Schizo all year. I doubt any decision on Lalime was made on 1 game. He was a one time starter who played himself out of the league. Despite the record the Sabres have played well in front of him keeping the shots to the outside and the scoring chances to a minimum. Tonight the Habs played a horrible game and the Sabres took advantage. Oh, for pete's sake. Give the man some credit already, and admit you were wrong about him. He's playing very, very well. Other game notes: - I'm happy for Max. He played quite well, with no awful turnovers and, yes, creating some space in the offensive zone with his speed. And that was the best game he's had on the backcheck that I can remember him having maybe ever. It sounded like the crowd gave him a big hand several times. - That was a pretty big shot Paille laid on Price with the elbow/forearm. There would be lots of calls for blood around here if our goalie caught that one. - I think the shortie was the prettiest goal I've ever seen Gaustad score. Speed and a nice deke for the finish. As another poster said, Goose had an all-around terrific game. - Also a very sweet goal by Spacek. - Stafford seems to be in a rut -- he can't seem to do anything with the puck except turn it over. Not much physical play out of him along the boards lately either. - I know the Habs lost Lang, but they look like they have no heart whatsoever. And what happened to Komisarek? He was invisible. Was he just overrated? - Not sure who sits for Moore on Friday night, but I'd guess Mair. MacArthur and Paille both looked pretty good. - Pommer and Hecht continue to struggle -- Hecht shot it wide from right in front off a sweet setup from Pommer, and Pommer fanned from the doorstep off a nice feed from Gaustad. - The boys had some bounce in their step, didn't they? They sure didn't look like they missed Kotalik. Go Sabres. That was a really good win.
tasker48b Posted March 5, 2009 Report Posted March 5, 2009 Apologies in advance - I haven't gone through the thread - but here are my comments * Gaustaud set the tone with his penalty on Plekanek in the first couple of minutes. I like that hit (the puck was sort of there and it wasn't "dirty") as it sets sends a message to the opposition. I saw Rivet destroy someone as well. The Sabres hitting ... a relevation! * Paille-Roy-Max was a really effective line. Great hustle by Paille and Max and a nice ES goal by Roy. I think Ruff reads this board ... this line was an interesting mix of different-style players.... playmaker in Roy, grinder in Paille, and whatever Max is on ... somebody from this Board suggested that the Sabres needed to move away from the "grinder-grinder-grinder" line and the "finesse-finesse-finesse" line .... Paille-Roy-Max was this concept in action * Lalime was money in the first period .... great job! * Dominic Moore might be a useful pick-up. Didn't look as though the team missed Kotalik. TO fans have highlighted Moore has the best Leaf forward this year. (Wow. That's not saying much). He should bring some energy and hustle and scoring which isn't a bad thing. * Make the playoffs Sabres.

Lalime was a rock in the first period, without him making those clutch save, who knows how this game ends up............He took the wind out of the Canadians.

I think Clarke played very poorly and has done so the majority of the year. Hecht could use some alone time in the press box as well. I know we have "5 centers" on the team right now (that could be argued as well) but I think Goose could center the 4th with Mair and Kaleta. Just my opinion, but I don't see what Mair's done to deserve being taken out of the line up. To me, he does his job, as a 4th center, and plays with energy. Who knows, though??
That Aud Smell Posted March 5, 2009 Report Posted March 5, 2009 i made it out for the game with some friends - a very good time it was. that said, when the shots read 18-3, things were not looking good. then don the sausage capitalized on a good bounce, and we were on our way. -Max coming back and not being "Stupid Max". Kept his shifts short, played decent without the puck, not many turnovers that I can remember and didn't overdo it in the offensive zone. How long before "Stupid Max" makes a reappearance? the lettuce-head did play a fairly inspired game - he back-checked effectively regularly. but as for keeping his shifts short, there were at least two instances in the latter half of the game where he clearly over-stayed his time on the ice and caused a bad change on the fly while he was doing his patented hand-raise as he coasted into the bench. a few other nits, since everyone else has really covered the waterfront: * seeing gaustad's faceoff style live had me wondering about his form and technique -- he gets himself so corkscrewed and then just about falls to the ice every time he takes a draw. seems weird. but, then, i am not a hockey player. * the price is wrong right now -- that kid is exuding no-confidence and was really fighting the puck at times. * i can't figure out which it is more: did brisebois make spacek look like paul coffey, or did spacek made brisebois look like darrien hatcher? * i can't shake the premonition that this post-trade deadline game was as decisive a win as we had against the predators the day after the deadline in 2008.
BuffalOhio Posted March 5, 2009 Report Posted March 5, 2009 * i can't shake the premonition that this post-trade deadline game was as decisive a win as we had against the predators the day after the deadline in 2008. I agree it was similar, but neither of the guys we traded for played. Hopefully, it's different this time!

I also am happy for Max and have said he deserves some respect for the time he has put in with this team even if we were going to trade him or not re-sign him this Off season. Now like the team question how long can he keep his play better/smarter? There is no doubt he opens up the ice both ways (offensively and Awful 'ensily"(e.g. giveaways) Good question , how about in for Hecht ? He certainly has struggled. Second choice the general who has not done much either - Agreed on the bounce lets see them play that way every night now and Big AL, sorry we can't afford no SO's so you won't be missed.
Mbossy Posted March 5, 2009 Report Posted March 5, 2009 Max back, yeah, he did turn it over, but just as much as other players last night. Made a nice stop on the cross ice pass.

In 2005-06 when he was with St Louis they sent him down to Peoria of the IHL. His record with St Louis was 4-18-8. His record with the Sabres? 3-11.
