If the Sabres extend Connolly and he gets injured again Regier should be fired that same day. As they help Connolly off the ice they should be escorting Regier from the arena.

i understand this sentiment.

Let's not kid ourselves, if he gets traded tomorrow, and scores 80 points in like 79 games next season with who ever, everyone on this board will be out after Darcy for letting go a "star". Don't tell me people wouldn't...

of the available risks we have with this guy, that is the one i'd be most comfortable taking.

Why? If his contract can be insured unlike last one, he might come in at a nice price.

do we know if this deal would/could be insured? insurance would certainly help in terms of real dollars. but what about the cap hit? yeah, there'd be cap relief for a guy who goes on IR, but the idea that he might miss 50-70% of a team's games does not guarantee that he'd be on IR at any point, nor would his being on IR mean that this team's management would make a deal to bring in someone to skate as a top center (2008-2009 is proof positive of that).

the bigger point here is that there are a lot of fans, myself included, who see connolly as a siren's song of player personnel -- absolutely beautiful to behold, but you follow it to your demise.

All, let's not kid ourselves. There is no way Connolly gets $4 million/year. That was kind of a random number that Vanek-Man threw out there and if you read his post, that's just his opinion of what he thinks Connolly's value is. I don't think there is anyway the Sabres are paying him that much and I don't think there's any way he will get that kind of money on the open market, which is precisely why if he signs with Buffalo, it will be to a slight discount. This is Chicago's negotiating stance with Havlatt, and this is likely to be the case with Connolly. I'm expecting a short term deal at not more than $2.5 million on a one year deal or $3 million cap hit on a 2 year deal, maximum. There is no way the Sabres spend more than this.

As for what Connolly brings to the team, can't really argue he's talented. He has not been healthy and does not justify a big time contract, and he will not see this from either Buffalo or from the open market, and this is precisely why he's willing to sign an extension with Buffalo because I think he and his agent realize they are not going to get anything better on the open market than what they will get from Buffalo.

How you doing in that Connolly's Next Injury pool, BTW? I KNOW you took the under, I'm just wondering what it was.

GO SABRES!!!

I take it TSN staff don't read Bucky, or vice versa. Nothing like polar opposite reporting within hours. One of them is totally wrong.

Almost like being a weather person. Doesn't matter if you are right or wrong.

WGR just reported talks (with Connolly's agent) heated up last night and resumed again at 9am this morning. Am I the only one pissed off by the timing of this?

On a day when Darcy should have a phone in each ear and a third on speaker dealing with other GMs, he is tied up with Connolly's agent. Why not set an internal deadline (of say 1 week ago) to get something done with Connolly?

Why must someone or a deadline force Darcy's hand every single time? :wallbash: How many more fax machines have to break before he learns?

Could it be that there's a deal with another team contingent on Connolly signing an extension before they agree to the deal?

GO SABRES!!!

TSN just reported the Sabres tabled a deal for at least $4M per for two seasons. They also say they tried to offer a 3 year deal but the money wasn't as much as Connolly (Agent) wanted.

That's just insane unless they can get someone to take Hecht off their hands.

That is insane. $8 million for what? 50-60 games? That would cripple this team cap wise for two years. Time spent talking to Connolly's agent is time taken away from talking to GMs who can possibly execute trades to help this team.

If what Dreger is reporting is true, than that is absolutely ridiculous. If that's the money it takes to keep Connolly, then I say buh-bye. You can't be giving a pay raise to a guy that has not played 2/3 of his contract. The bad part is I'm sure the Sabres will likely get the deal done. Given the huge pay raises to Pominville and Miller next year and if you get Connolly at $4 million per, what money is there left to pay Stafford and Sekera? If history and comparables are any indication, it will take about $2.5 million/year to keep Stafford here as that was the number on the offer sheets both Backes and Bernier signed last year and Stafford has better numbers this year than both of those guys had last year. I don't know where the Sabres have the money against the cap unless they plan on spending to the ceiling, which I don't think is likely either. Bad deal if this is true for Connolly.

Here's the link to Bucky's story: linkski, in which he states that TC will almost certainly be traded.

This will actually be an interesting test of Bucky's "sources".

As for the TSN report, I'd be amazed if the Sabres gave TC $4MM per year, but crazier things have been known to happen.

Hey, a fax machine joke. Haven't heard that in while. Very original. Can't wait until your next attempt at humor.

nfw is he worth 4 million a year! In this economy the sabres would be limiting themselves for future moves.

Not only the economy, but what has he done to justify $4M/yr? Just having talent is not enough.

The part that pisses me off, is WTF is DR thinking making this kind of offer. It gives me little hope that a major shakeup is coming today or in the offseason.

Just thinking the same thing. At this point, I don't think it matters if Connolly takes the offer or not. The fact the offer was made should scare ALL Sabres fans.

1) The reference supported the point of my post.

2) The Sabres lost an asset by waiting until the last minute and a fax machine malfunctioned. That could be ridiculed in every post by everyone from here to eternity and it would not be overkill.

3) Lighten up, Francis.

Agreed, because this offer scares the :censored: outta me.

This convinces me that the Sabres need a new GM. Regier is just too much in love with his own players that he is blinded by it. I can't believe he is wasting time on a Connolly contract instead of working the phones and getting deals done to improve this hockey club for today and for the future.

Bucky called the Vermette deal.
