CallawaySabres Posted February 27, 2009 Report Posted February 27, 2009 For all I care, EVERYONE else could be traded for draft picks by the deadline and I would be fine with it. Really, the only guys who have had good to great seasons are Miller , Vanek, Spacek and Kaleta. Everyone else is so up and down....it's ridiculous. I cannot believe how useless Connolly has been since the Vanek injury...never a good sign. One more thing, if I did not have two little ones asleep last night, I would have been screaming LUDMAN you effin idiot at the top of my lungs!! Oh My Goodness!! I still think Buffalo is going to make the playoffs.......

I was just thinking last night how Connolly has really disappeared after the hot start(since he came back from the injury). No goals in 9 games and only 2 assists in the last 4 games.

No goals in 9 games and only 2 assists in the last 4 games. Could that be a conditioning issue with Connolly? I said a few weeks ago his hot start can be attributed to his fresh legs. I wonder if it is catching up with him. He doesn't seem to have the same jump in his step.

Could be, but more likely Timmy's the center of attention for the opposition's best defensive guys now, whereas it's usually Vanek's doing the honors.

I'd have to agree here. Its hard losing all those goals Vanek produced, even harder now that an opponets top D can focus on TC.

The key word there is "produced". Yeah, he scored a ton, but it was also amazing to watch how many goals he created for thie team either through his screens or the fact that the other team always had to be aware of where he was on the ice. I really wish there was some statistical way to quantify this because his numbers would be through the roof.

I'm not saying from you, just in general. I think his time out is showing people exactly how valuable he is and why the Sabres made the investment in him.

I think his time out is showing people exactly how valuable he is and why the Sabres made the investment in him. It's obvious that Vanek is extremely valuable to the team, however, I think their choice to match the offer sheet was more a kneejerk reaction in response to many of the Sabres top players departing the team. Frankly, they were being poached by teams with bigger pockets, and chose to stand their ground with Vanek. It looks like a great decision now, no arguing that, but I would say that it was still to early to tell what type of player Vanek would become at that time. In my opinion, you hand out that kind of money willingly after a player has proved that he his an all around talent (something Vanek has not acheived until this season). Look at how Ruff's insistence on turning Vanek into a two-way player has helped his value. Sure he was a scorer his first two years and had great numbers, but his game was still unpolished in other facets. Vanek has responded remarkably well to Ruff's approach, but I think at the time they matched it was still too early to say whether he'd turn into a star befitting of a $50 million dollar contract.

I'd say the same about Connolly but I'm sure you're still willing to trade him for a 5th round pick in 2050
deluca67 Posted February 28, 2009 Report Posted February 28, 2009 I'd say the same about Connolly but I'm sure you're still willing to trade him for a 5th round pick in 2050 In all due respect to Tim Connolly. He needs to put together a bit longer stretch of high level play before he gets that type of consideration. His career high in goals is still 16 and points 55.

I still think Buffalo is going to make the playoffs....... Overall I pretty much agree with your list... I'd keep Miller, Roy, Vanek, Butler, Sekera, Kaleta and Stafford as the core, and make everyone else from the big club available. Some of the rest I'm ambivalent about and can make a case for keeping, but there is way too much mentally fragile dead weight on this roster. (I'm not going to indict any of the young guys down in the minors or include them in the "dead weight" category.)
LabattBlue Posted March 1, 2009 Report Posted March 1, 2009 I'd keep Miller, Roy, Vanek, Butler, Sekera, Kaleta and Stafford as the core I'm good with this list. I'd consider adding Kaleta and Gaustad(despite his salary) only because this organization is so lacking in the skill sets they bring to the table. Kaleta more so than Gaustad. Is it really that hard to find a guy who can skate at the NHL level who is nothing more than a banger or defensive specialist or do these types of players just not interest DR?

Yeah, Gaustad really proved his value this year being a big body in front of the net . It was easy to see how much the Sabres need him up front during his latest injury. Plus he comes to play every night. I hope he can stay healthy down the stretch.

Yeah, I should have added Gaustad as well.
Peace Frog Posted March 2, 2009 Report Posted March 2, 2009 I have no problem adding Lalime to the list. He's nowhere in Miller's league, but as an affordable backup, he has kept us in games. It's the majority of the team that has let him down. I wonder if Steve Tasker can skate?
