inkman Posted February 19, 2009 Report Posted February 19, 2009 During the Toronto game, my wife commented how the HSBC was rocking, while Foo Fighters was being played over the loud speaker. I proceeded to tell her that they were in Canada and Buffalo doesn't play music like that. Does anyone have a good answer for this?

As for HSBC, are you saying you're not a fan of Cotton Eye Joe?

No chance to talk with your friends / other fans during stoppages. I've actually talked to the guy who handles that stuff--it's not about to change.
Stoner Posted February 19, 2009 Report Posted February 19, 2009 I hope someone got the message after the Sabres tied the Sharks game that if you lay off the piped-in noise, the crowd can get into the moment. Artie Baby Boo Boo was smiling in his broadcast booth in the sky.

So the guy actually acknowledged the suckiness of the music and said it won't change? or was it denying the music sucked? I actually think they made some steps by adding Coheed & Cambria and Arcade Fire this year, but the "pump up the crowd" music is as bad as it comes.

NowDoYouBelieve Posted February 19, 2009 Report Posted February 19, 2009 I hate how they play Shippin' Up To Boston on the powerplays. It's a kickass song but shouldn't that be a Bruins thing?

And almost as annoying as corporate sponsorship of Power Plays...
inkman Posted February 19, 2009 Author Report Posted February 19, 2009 I hate how they play Shippin' Up To Boston on the powerplays. It's a kickass song but shouldn't that be a Bruins thing? ...and should 'Rock You Like a Hurricane' be their intro on MSG. Boo on all accounts.

Toronto as a whole is nuts about the Foo Fighters... they are loaded with badass pump up songs too... anyway, yeah ours sucks.
jwcolour Posted February 19, 2009 Report Posted February 19, 2009 More annoying than the old Fox glowing puck in my book. NO CHANCE. I was little when they had that and its some sort of stupid novelty I definitely would've loved, however even at a young age I understood that it made the game impossible to watch. Shots looked like meteorites burning up in the atmosphere and there was no way to see if it went in or not...blagh barf.

They can take back Sweet Caroline as well with it. Only Red Sox fans should be allowed to sing that because only they are douchey and annoying enough to pull it off without looking like posers. Plus ya know, they started it.
FearTheReaper Posted February 19, 2009 Report Posted February 19, 2009 I love when i get into an crazy, pumped up hockey mood, and then i hear something like "Hey,hey, you, you,i can be your girlfriend" in the background of our arena. Thats goes well with an agressive hockey mood, let me tell ya. Sometimes i think its the music in HSBC that made us play like crap at home for the first half.
jwcolour Posted February 19, 2009 Report Posted February 19, 2009 I would enjoy a little Jackson Browne "Running on Empty" when the boys come out looking like they are trying to throw a goose egg up on the scoreboard.
That Aud Smell Posted February 19, 2009 Report Posted February 19, 2009 i agree that the in-game music programming needs a major overhaul. has eleven responded to calls for details on how/why he knows nothing's going to change? it's strange - quinn has shown a willingness to sink some cash into improving the production value of in-game stuff (think "better days," for one) - yet something so simple as having a supervised intern with a laptop to plug in some fun/varied/new music is something they can't get right. all that said, a game at the arena is not complete for me if i don't hear the opening bars of "tom sawyer". I would enjoy a little Jackson Browne "Running on Empty" when the boys come out looking like they are trying to throw a goose egg up on the scoreboard. sorry, but those cornball efforts to dovetail a song on the p.a. system with the circumstances on the ice are probably the most annoying thing about hockey arenas in the modern era (i think they've actually cut back on this some at hsbc) -- back in 2005, they played collins/genesis' "misunderstanding" every time we took a minor. :death:
tom webster Posted February 19, 2009 Report Posted February 19, 2009 I have been told that the music played has to do with royalties and different packages of music available that cost less versus other packages. It's why the music, while not the same at every arena, is similiar at a lot of them.
inkman Posted February 19, 2009 Author Report Posted February 19, 2009 I have been told that the music played has to do with royalties... Somethings are worth the price, increasing fan entertainment has to be one.

I actually think they made some steps by adding Coheed & Cambria and Arcade Fire this year, but the "pump up the crowd" music is as bad as it comes. He acknowledged that it was loud--we weren't talking about the selection of tunes, just the volume--and basically told me that while he'd certainly take my comment back to his bosses (I'll bet he did, too; he seemed like a decent guy), all arenas these days use very loud pump-the-crowd up music, and that he doubted that HSBC would be leading the charge to change that. He also agreed that the noise-o-meter is stupid. I should clarify my first post in this thread, too. When I say "the guy who handles this stuff," I mean the techie, not the policy-maker. Sorry if there was confusion.
tom webster Posted February 19, 2009 Report Posted February 19, 2009 Somethings are worth the price, increasing fan entertainment has to be one. If you were making a list of reasons to go the arena, would the music played fall into the top 20? For the record, I'm old school and wish there was no music, but its not something I want my team spending too much time worrying about either.
That Aud Smell Posted February 19, 2009 Report Posted February 19, 2009 whatever they do, they should, like boston, be sure to pay royalties for the right to play "livin' on a prayer." <param name="movie" value=" name="allowFullScreen" value="true"><embed src=" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" allowscriptaccess="always" allowfullscreen="true" width="425" height="344">

It should be organ music.....except Lady of Spain.....never play Lady of Spain again.
jwcolour Posted February 20, 2009 Report Posted February 20, 2009 I have been told that the music played has to do with royalties and different packages of music available that cost less versus other packages. It's why the music, while not the same at every arena, is similiar at a lot of them. I'm pretty sure its the same as with any building. If i remember from my Radio TV major in college.. They have to register (and pay large money) to ASCAP, or BMI or (I forget the other smaller association)... some places only register with one or the other, some places both ASCAP and BMI. Each organization you "subscribe" if you will; gives you the rights to play certain artists that are signed up to them. These companies then track which music is played and how many times and deals out the royalties accordingly. So if say The Foo Fighters were a BMI artist and HSBC Arena is only signed up to ASCAP, it would be illegal for HSBC to play Foo Fighters music. Thats how it is with most bars and such and im assuming it'd be the same for any larger building. If you care to read more heres wikipedia stuff... I didn't bother to read it. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/ASCAP http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Broadcast_Music_Incorporated
wonderbread Posted February 20, 2009 Report Posted February 20, 2009 I heard cotton eye joe last night! HSBC isn't the only one to embrace it. Same with Mellon in Pgh. The Yinzers love that stuff

Agree 100% One place I'd encourage the Sabres to save some cash. I'd really like to be able to talk about what just happened to my buddy next to me at a break. Instead, the eardrum assault begins. Ears were ringing from last night and it wasn't from a fanatical Philly crowd. Guess I am getting too old.
