deluca67 Posted February 23, 2009 Report Posted February 23, 2009 Could be a big one Thursday. Hopefully we can beat the Quackers Tuesday and not be trying to catch up to the Canes by the time Thursday's game rolls around.... By the way, Canes play @Ottawa Tuesday. All games are huge now. They have been since the beginning of the year. Hopefully Miller getting knocked out is the reality check this team needed. I just do see it happening. They should have been in playoff mode by now and yet they seem on most nights to be uninterested and uninspired. I honestly feel that this team is more inclined to grab the excuse of Miller being out and running with it out of the playoff picture.

The team is 5-4-1 this month against a pretty tough schedule, and largely without its leading scorer. I don't know what team you've been watching, but the only game where they seemed legitimately uninspired to me was the loss to Carolina, and we quickly repented by dominating Toronto. Look, everybody knew that the Sabres would be a middle-of-the-road team, fighting it out for the playoffs. Sure, a few guys have been seriously disappointing, but our record does not indicate that we've overperformed or underperformed this season.

The Sabres started 2009 4-0 and have been trading wins and loses since. I have to ask you a question and be honest. Are the Sabres a playoff contender because they deserve it or are they a playoff contender largely due to the failures of teams like the Habs, Rangers and Pens? I feel they have been living off of the kindness of strangers (a tip of the cap to Oscar night).

I feel they have been living off of the kindness of strangers (a tip of the cap to Oscar night). Honestly, I do think we are deserving of a 6th, 7th, or 8th seed. Eventually, teams revert back to the norm over the course of a long season. When we were 6-0-2, everybody knew we would eventually take a tumble, which we did. The Rangers and Habs are mediocre teams, just like the Sabres, and they have come crashing down to Earth like most mediocre teams that get off to good starts. If we aren't deserving of a playoff spot, then which other 8 teams are? We're currently on pace for 93 points. Last year, the 8th seed had 94 points. The year before that, 92 points. So if we finish with 93 points and in 8th place, how would you say we didn't deserve it? It's not as if the Eastern Conference has taken a giant fall this year, allowing for crappy teams to make the playoffs. I just happen to think we are the 7th or 8th best team in the East, plain and simple. As for the Penguins, I don't know what the heck happened to them, other than losing Gonchar for so long, but this season they just decided to stop playing defense. After watching them against the Caps today, I'd say 10th place is right where they belong. And yes, we've been trading wins and losses. That's what .500 teams do. And in the NHL, .500 teams make the playoffs. Would you rather see a more streaky team?

It really looks like any team that can put two solids weeks together can secure a playoff spot. The teams that don't will be on the outside looking in.
carpandean Posted February 23, 2009 Report Posted February 23, 2009 Rangers are tied 0-0 with the Leafs at the start of the third. The game is playing on yahoo sports: http://sports.yahoo.com/nhl/hockeynight/2009022213

I'm pretty sure that hes just got no life since anytime I check out the site there is always 400 new posts by the guy. He's just looking for his attention. There's no way anyone can say how disinterested the team is and how they're just looking for excuses the way they've played in 2009. Aside from the one Canes game they've been in every other game and showed alot of effort to me. I've wrote negative posts in the past when the team doesn't show up but "honestly" they've been playing about as good as they are lately. The team just isn't a stanley cup contender but they are a playoff team IMO. Update......Leafs up 2-1 against Rags in the 3rd

I don't mind when established posters try to run me into the boards. I don't take kindly to newbies jumping on my back. Why don't you try understanding what I post before you respond? For the record, if you think the Canes game is the only game this team seemed disinterested then you're just a garden variety excuse maker.
NowDoYouBelieve Posted February 23, 2009 Report Posted February 23, 2009 Ughhhh Rags tie it up with 40 seconds remaining. F*ck you, Maple Leafs.
carpandean Posted February 23, 2009 Report Posted February 23, 2009 :censored: Rangers tied it with about 30 second left. Going to OT. Kubina wins it in OT! Rangers just get 1.
millbank Posted February 23, 2009 Report Posted February 23, 2009 all can go to bed now happy and rested for school and work.... the Leafs in stunning and resilient fashion, overcoming adversity, moving mountains, navigating through enormous dangers have won.... oh joy, oh happiness.
NowDoYouBelieve Posted February 23, 2009 Report Posted February 23, 2009 If the Rags finish one point ahead of us, I'm blaming Toskala.
carpandean Posted February 23, 2009 Report Posted February 23, 2009 If the Rags finish one point ahead of us, I'm blaming Toskala. Nah, two of the Leafs completely screened him on the shot and the puck deflective off of one of them.
NowDoYouBelieve Posted February 23, 2009 Report Posted February 23, 2009 Nah, two of the Leafs completely screened him on the shot and the puck deflective off of one of them. I hadn't even seen the goal when I said that, I just know how bad Toskala usually sucks.
Cereal Posted February 23, 2009 Report Posted February 23, 2009 I hadn't even seen the goal when I said that, I just know how bad Toskala usually sucks. Actually, I saw most of the game, and Toskala looked pretty sharp. I thought, "Now this is the Toskala I used to know! [when he was splitting starts 50-50 with Nabokov a few years back]" He had 39 saves ast night. 'Twas a fun game to watch, lots of back and forth in the first and second periods, but 0-0 until the third. Also, Roszival changed his number to 33 and I was confused as hell for awhile. (Harry Howell's 3 got retired last night.)
carpandean Posted February 26, 2009 Report Posted February 26, 2009 Isles manage to shutout the Penguins for 57 minute and only allow one goal, but still somehow lost to the Penguins 1-0. The Penguins are now just two points behind, though we do have a game-in-hand. Toronto was able to tie the Rangers in the third and win it in a shootout. With just one point in the second straight game versus the Leafs, the Rangers remain just two point ahead of us and we have a game-in-hand, as well as the tie-breaker. Also worth noting is that the Rangers play the Panthers tomorrow, meaning that at least one team will get two points. Hopefully, it won't be a three-point game, though. Hmm, do you think tomorrow's game is important? :(

Wow, we (fans) need that not to be a three point game. And we need a Sabres win.
SwampD Posted March 1, 2009 Report Posted March 1, 2009 Not that it matters with the way we are playing, but man, I hate having to root for the Devils. Philly/Devils games are usually pretty good though.
carpandean Posted March 1, 2009 Report Posted March 1, 2009 I would like to thank the cellar-dweller Thrashers for coming back to defeat Carolina for us last night. That said, I believe that we've used up all the help that we can expect to get. From here on out, we better start winning more often that losing or we will be out of it very quickly.

I agree, watching some fo these other teams on CI what I have been seeing is teams rising to the occasion and finding that extra gear to get it done. e.g. Pens against Isles and then again in Chicago all while Sid is out injured. Florida has certainly been a team on the rise and playing some of it's best hockey. We have also seen Carolina do it. What we haven't seen is our Sabres do it. That comment from Spacek last night(Thought it would be easy sticks in my craw. The teams that get it at this point of the season play like they want it and leave it all out on the ice. If these players don't get it and can't be motivated to play like they need then the FO has all it needs to know about the roster changes they need to make.
carpandean Posted March 1, 2009 Report Posted March 1, 2009 e.g. Pens ... in Chicago Anyone else notice how Towes goal to go up 3-2 was called off due to a high stick that was similar to Crosby's OT game winner against us earlier this year?
R_Dudley Posted March 1, 2009 Report Posted March 1, 2009 Anyone else notice how Towes goal to go up 3-2 was called off due to a high stick that was similar to Crosby's OT game winner against us earlier this year? Yes Sir I did. I watch allot of Pens games here and not that I wanted to turn it into Referee's thread but I will say the Pens with the NHL poster child do get a hell of allot of favorable calls.
R_Dudley Posted March 1, 2009 Report Posted March 1, 2009 Glen Metropolit and Ossi Vaananen waived by Philly to make room for Danny Briere. per TSN. Not that it matters with the way we are playing, but man, I hate having to root for the Devils. Philly/Devils games are usually pretty good though. Yep watching this one now and NJ up 2-0 but it really is a playoff style game. Both teams know whats at stake and are playing like it. Imagine that, players that know what time of year it is and what they are playing for. Go figure
R_Dudley Posted March 1, 2009 Report Posted March 1, 2009 I'll tell you what watching these games today; NJ-PHL, PGH-DAL, FLA-WSH and how hard these teams are playing knowing whats on the line compared to what our Sabs have done last 2 games makes me  ....... PGH has us on the outside looking in after today . The Sabs do not deserve to be in the Playoffs the way they are playing....... Oh and I've come to the conclusion they won't be because this dog don't hunt and these other teams are not letting up much plus we will play some of them along the way and they know what it takes...
