Eleven Posted February 17, 2009 Report Posted February 17, 2009 We've had a couple of threads recently involving games with other Eastern Conference teams; I thought maybe we could keep it all together, rather than posting in a Toronto-Pittsburgh thread about a NYI-Pittsburgh game two days later. Maybe it'll work, maybe not. Right now: Rangers losing to the Blues (why did Versus schedule THIS game?) with less than four left. And on EDIT: The Blues held. No points for the Rangers tonight.
jwcolour Posted February 17, 2009 Report Posted February 17, 2009 In anycase, nice of them both to lose even though Pittsburgh got a point. Just watched the Bluejackets Stars shootout. Jackets really screwed that one up had Turco beat 2 times and somehow either they shot it through the crease and wide or another time he somehow got a skate blade or something on the puck even though he was already inside his own net. Not that that has anything to do with the Sabres but it was interesting.
wonderbread Posted February 17, 2009 Report Posted February 17, 2009 Nice title. I will catalog this in my "Longest Thread Names of All Time" Thread. Kidding aside I have been waiting for a general playoff thread to develop. I hope its an interesting race with some teams hopefully starting to fall off to make the trade deadline exciting also.
bob_sauve28 Posted February 17, 2009 Report Posted February 17, 2009 I'm glad Rangers lost! Nice goal there for the Blues late to win it.
wonderbread Posted February 17, 2009 Report Posted February 17, 2009 I'm glad Rangers lost! Nice goal there for the Blues late to win it. I can't wait till the Rags freefall.
bob_sauve28 Posted February 17, 2009 Report Posted February 17, 2009 I can't wait till the Rags freefall. Six in a row on the road I think they said, so your waiting might be over! I bet there is another unemployed coach soon
carpandean Posted February 17, 2009 Report Posted February 17, 2009 I'm starting to think that the Sens are a safer bet to make the playoffs than the Rags.
nfreeman Posted February 17, 2009 Report Posted February 17, 2009 The Rangers have lost 8 out of 9. check it out. here are some tidbits: the Rangers, who have lost eight of nine while scoring two or fewer goals in all but one Rangers coach Tom Renney called timeout midway through the second period. It immediately backfired when Colaiacovo roofed a shot from the point off a faceoff, only 2 seconds after play resumed, to put the Blues ahead at 10:27 of the second. Andy McDonald beat Chris Drury on the faceoff Blues D Jay McKee was a healthy scratch for the second straight game. Drury has been limited to three assists the last 12 games Moral of the story: while the Sabres have let us down again this past week, they are far from the only ones. The Devils and the Bruins are the class of the EC (and I'll say again that I really wanted us to go after Rolston last summer), the Caps may or may not belong in that upper echelon, and then there are 4-5 flawed teams jockeying for position. The Sabres are one of those teams. With some internal development and some good management, they could get into the upper echelon next year. All the "tear-them-down-and-rebuild" talk is typical hysterical overstatement. 2nd moral of the story: with very few exceptions, highly-paid UFAs almost always hurt their prior teams by leaving more than they help their new teams by arriving. McKee has been a washout with STL, and Drury has been good, but far from great, with the Rangers. But the Sabres really miss both of them. And there are very few players on the Sabres I wouldn't trade for Grier.
nfreeman Posted February 17, 2009 Report Posted February 17, 2009 Forgot to mention: the Habs are 3-10 in their last 13.
Hawerchuk Posted February 17, 2009 Report Posted February 17, 2009 I can't wait till the Rags freefall. I'll gladly second that!
Cereal Posted February 18, 2009 Report Posted February 18, 2009 Alright... Buffalo beats Toronto... been watching BOS@CAR in between. A bunch of exciting scoring chances both ways. Carolina loss would give us a 5-point cushion once again. Let's go Tim Thomas! 2-1 Boston halfway through third.
Cereal Posted February 18, 2009 Report Posted February 18, 2009 Krejci a shorty backhand past Ward to put Boston up 3-1, 3.5 minutes left. w00t. Oh, and now Carolina shorthanded for 2 minutes. sweet.
Eleven Posted February 18, 2009 Author Report Posted February 18, 2009 TSN is reporting that Montreal left Kovalev at home for its current road trip. Interesting. I'd love to see him as far away from the Northeast Division as possible.
inkman Posted February 18, 2009 Report Posted February 18, 2009 TSN is reporting that Montreal left Kovalev at home for its current road trip. Interesting. I'd love to see him as far away from the Northeast Division as possible. The Habs without Lang and Kovalev. That lineup is getting awfully not scary. Even Buffaloesque. I can't imagine what they would have to give up to get LeCavalier, but it would most cetainly deplete their depth to epic proportions.
NowDoYouBelieve Posted February 18, 2009 Report Posted February 18, 2009 We're Islanders and Capitals fans today. In their current state of injury and disarray, it's hard to imagine the Habs taking down the Caps. Hopefully, the Isles can do us a favor and beat the Rags.

In their current state of injury and disarray, it's hard to imagine the Habs taking down the Caps. Hopefully, the Isles can do us a favor and beat the Rags. We'll be asking a lot of the Islanders over the next month and a half: 2/18 - Rangers 2/19 - Hurricanes 2/25 - Penguins 2/28 - Sabres 3/5 - Rangers 3/12 - Canadiens 3/20 - Hurricanes 4/2 - Canadiens 4/7 - Hurricanes 4/9 - Penguins Besides losing to us, those games against the Canes and Pens will be huge toward the Sabres making sure that we make the playoffs. The others would be nice for position. Of course, those two categories could switch if the Rangers and/or Canadiens continue to free fall.

carpandean Posted February 18, 2009 Report Posted February 18, 2009 I hereby appoint the New York Islanders to the position of Best Team in the NHL. I won't list their schedules, but there are several teams in the East (e.g., the Caps), who play those four teams and Florida several times down the stretch that have a better chance of helping us (and also hurting us in our own games.) Those teams even play each other (no three-point games, please.) Unfortunately, for us, the Islanders will likely hold a fire sale during the next couple of weeks and make a push for the Tavares lottery. Any victories on that list, other than against us, should be considered bonuses.

Just to tag along on this one, even if the Islanders win these games they'd still be in tenth place right now. :w00t:
Derrico Posted February 22, 2009 Report Posted February 22, 2009 Well, 8 min to go in the Pens/Caps game and it's 5-2 Washington. Atleast the Pens drop yet another game back. We now have a 4 point lead and a game in hand on them. As for the other team trying to catch us, the Canes play today as well at 3 o'clock. They're hosting Colorado so let's go Av's!

I have never been a bigger Avs fan than I am today. Let's go Hejduk, Smyth, and Liles!!! Edit: Updated, Wojtek Wolski scored to make it 1-0 Colorado in the first period.
NowDoYouBelieve Posted February 22, 2009 Report Posted February 22, 2009 Game is tied 1-1 after the first. Carolina had the better period, but couldn't capitalize on 4 power plays. Come on, Avs, this would be big.

deluca67 Posted February 23, 2009 Report Posted February 23, 2009 And suddenly the Canes are one point back.
Cereal Posted February 23, 2009 Report Posted February 23, 2009 And suddenly the Canes are one point back. Could be a big one Thursday. Hopefully we can beat the Quackers Tuesday and not be trying to catch up to the Canes by the time Thursday's game rolls around.... By the way, Canes play @Ottawa Tuesday.
