carpandean Posted February 17, 2009 Report Posted February 17, 2009 if i was ruff, i would have gerbe play between mancari ( you all know that i believe this guy is a difference maker) and kaleta. a KID line can have a great inpact on a club emotionally. mair should be sat. You may want a center on that line. No, Gerbe is not one despite what he is listed as. Wasn't at BC; wasn't in Portland; isn't here. (This is a recording.)
Anzaloha Posted February 17, 2009 Report Posted February 17, 2009 Can't scoreCan't make plays Wont go into traffic unless he is the one that is following Can not beat players one on one weak shot Suprisingly not very quick considering his size. weak on the puck And by the way he is way too small for the NHL perenial AHL player Stat Overview SPLIT GP G A PTS +/- PIM SOG SPCT PPG PPA SHG SHA GWG ATOI PROD 2008-09 9 0 1 1 3 4 23 0.0 0 1 0 0 0 13:31 121:39 Projected 13 0 1 1 4 6 33 0.0 0 1 0 0 0 13:31 121:39 Career 9 0 1 1 3 4 23 0.0 0 1 0 0 0 -- -- Another bust Darcy. I agree that if you can't even spell his name right, you make yourself look like an idiot in criticizing him. 9 games in and you have him as a bust. Too funny. The closest you will get to GM is driving one. GM = Goofy Moron
cilevel Posted February 17, 2009 Report Posted February 17, 2009 I stopped reading at the line in bold print. I saw Gerbe's first game against the Lightning in person and watched the rest on TV. I am going to guess you are just following stat lines and not basing anything on actual game play. Gerbe is the most physical dwarf I have ever seen play hockey. He doesn;t play as if he knows he is a foot shorter than every one else on the ice. He took a shot in traffic the other night and bounced right back up. He is more physical at 4'4" or what ever he is than many of there Sabres that tower over him. I am far from being a Sabres apologist. There is certainly plenty about this team to dislike and bitch about. Gerbe is not one of them. I love this kids personality and mind set. I hope it is his mind set that infects the locker room and not the other way around. I agree, Gerbe actually does go into traffic and finishes his checks, albeit inconsistently at this point. It is way too early to rip on the guy. He plays with a lot more heart than just about anyone else on the roster. I see improvements in his game from his first callup and feel it will not be an overnight progression for him. Don't know how much more we can expect from a 5th round draft pick. If he eventually makes the NHL full time, that's better than a lot of 2nd rounders so while some may not have patience, he is actually ahead of the curve.

If all of the official web pages (portlandpirates.com, sabres.nhl.com, etc., etc.) would simply change how he is listed, it would help the cause so much. I'm guessing that they saw he was (a lot) under 5'10" and figured that he had to be a center based on the Sabres' history.

I'm guessing that they saw he was (a lot) under 5'10" and figured that he had to be a center based on the Sabres' history. The only thing I've heard to back it up is that he played a little center at the tryout camp for last year's World Championship. I've never seen anything concrete to actually back that up though. Before that, you'd have to go all the way back to his time with the USNTDP to find if he ever played center there because he didn't at BC. I did see that team play a couple games back in '04 and '05 when he was there, but there's no chance of me actually noticing where he was skating. I would've been paying far more attention to Kane, Kessel, Mueller, and Jack and Erik Johnson at that point.

matter2003 Posted February 18, 2009 Report Posted February 18, 2009 It's GerbE, not GerbY. If you are going to rip him a new ahole, at least get the name right. Also, how big of you to predict that he will be a bust based on 9 games at the NHL level. yes, 9 games in, and we know all there is to know about his chances at this level...
inkman Posted February 18, 2009 Report Posted February 18, 2009 Watching Nathan as much as I could last night, I think he has a long way to go. He was knocked off the puck with ease by everyone in a Leafs uni. His speed hardly made any difference and he made several bad plays with the puck. My favorite "Gerb" moment came when he was falling to the ice trying to clear the zone and missed the puck by about 2 feet. I think he is the only player in the NHL that could have missed it. It was right next to him but his midget arm and his midget stick couldn't even come close. While this says nothing to his long term future with the team, I think he'll need at least another full season in the AHL before he is close to being ready.

inkman Posted February 18, 2009 Report Posted February 18, 2009 going after gerbe is really stupid. SEE POST in this thread: Lethbridge Broncos Feb 16 2009, 08:14 PM Ok. I still think he has a long way to go. You and 'NowDoYouBelieve' are the most optimistic, Blue and Gold colored glasses wearing Sabres fans on this board. You had to wrestle those glasses away from Vanek-Man but you are proudly wearing them now. I'm just telling it like I see it. Gerbe is physically outmatched in every phase of the game. He may one day learn the nuances a player of his size needs to succeed in the NHL but for the time being he isn't there. EVERY single time he went to the boards last night, he was knocked of the puck, by the Leafs defense no less. He's just not ready.

And we're expecting this player who is not ready to suddenly get it while playing on the first line. It's a huge set back to have a guy who can't yet produce playing on the one line that is supposed to produce the most.

In the middle of the game last night, I actually caught myself thinking, "I wish Paille or MacArthur were on this line instead of Gerbe."
nfreeman Posted February 18, 2009 Report Posted February 18, 2009 He did make a pretty nifty between-the-legs pass from the boards to someone (maybe stafford) right in front of the net last night. And he's pretty fast. Overall, I agree that he's not ready for prime time. I'm sure he'll go back to Portland when Goose (or Max for that matter) gets back. But he's got potential. I remember Roy getting knocked down seemingly every time somebody touched him in '05-'06 (although some of that was probably diving). It will take time for Gerbe to adjust to the NHL, but I haven't seen anything to make me conclude that he can't get there.
