Can't score

Can't make plays

Wont go into traffic unless he is the one that is following

Can not beat players one on one

weak shot

Suprisingly not very quick considering his size.

weak on the puck

And by the way he is way too small for the NHL perenial AHL player

It's GerbE, not GerbY. If you are going to rip him a new ahole, at least get the name right. Also, how big of you to predict that he will be a bust based on 9 games at the NHL level.

9 games? That's it??

- Leads all AHL rookies in goals, despite having played significantly less games than almost all of them.

- Ranks 3rd in the AHL (all skaters, not just rookies) in goals per game.

- Ranks 7th in the AHL (all skaters, not just rookies) in points per game.

- Selected for the AHL All-Star Game as a rookie (didn't play due to an injury.)

- Plays more physically than half of our big body skaters.

- Has little fear (probably less than he should) of going into the corners.

- Actually has a laser of a shot when he takes it.

- Is quite quick (not sure what you are watching.)

- Has played just 9 games in the NHL during his first pro season.

Obviously, he's not one of those day-1 NHL primetime-ready players, of which there are never more than a handful, but we're a long way from calling him a bust. He has tons of heart and a lot of talent. It will take time to see if he can translate that to the NHL, some never do, but two short callups during a rookie AHL-campaign are not enough to make any real conclusions. He might be ready next season or he may start again in Portland. Even then, though, it would be too soon to reach any conclusions about him. You can tell right now that he is not playing as confidently as he does in the AHL. If he gets a goal or two, you will see his confidence rise and he might take a big leap forward.

Hey, flame the regulars all you want, but to quit on a kid in his first pro season, thrown into the big club like this? Nice call.

That said, I think it's quite clear he's not NHL ready, but how can you expect him to be? Give him 2 more years, then let's see where he's at.

not for nothin', but the kid was taken 145th overall in 2005. so, basically, we took a flyer on an undersized kid at a time when the league was poised to come back as the "new (new) nhl." (and, in fact, the league did thusly return, and did in fact look like a new league for about two years (remember that?).)

that said, darcy did have a collosal bust in 2005, but his name is marek zagrapan.

I don't think Gerbe can succeed on this team as it currently is composed. Seems to me that he needs teammates who can tie up the opposition and keep them from knocking him down every six seconds. That's not this team right now.

Can't spell

We have to add that one to the list because Gerbe, in fact, can't actually spell.

I stopped reading at the line in bold print. I saw Gerbe's first game against the Lightning in person and watched the rest on TV. I am going to guess you are just following stat lines and not basing anything on actual game play. Gerbe is the most physical dwarf I have ever seen play hockey. He doesn;t play as if he knows he is a foot shorter than every one else on the ice. He took a shot in traffic the other night and bounced right back up. He is more physical at 4'4" or what ever he is than many of there Sabres that tower over him.

I am far from being a Sabres apologist. There is certainly plenty about this team to dislike and bitch about. Gerbe is not one of them. I love this kids personality and mind set. I hope it is his mind set that infects the locker room and not the other way around.

He seems more "NHL ready" then alot of the regulars

Now I don't like Darcy, and I think he is holding the team back, but even i won't say that Gerbe was a bad move by him.

You do realise he is a rookie this year?

I agree, i've seen him in traffic a number of times. I even remember saying to myself... "hmmm, well hes not much of a screen" when he was standing in front of the goaltender screening him while the D ripped a shot from the point. Never the less, he was in right in the middle of all the traffic and held his own.

You do realize that 23 shots on goal in 9 games would project to over 200 SOG in a season.

going after gerbe is really stupid. i mean. he is a green rookie -- who has played pretty well. he has finished his checks and been active. his supporting cast sucks the big one.

now, if we are going to really debate this, lets break this down:

gerbe was a 5th rounder. hardly a botched pick by DR. in fact, an awesome pick.

this kid has heart. you take a guy his size and tell him to go after a puck against a rugged elbow throwing defender -- and he will do it. his confidence is gaining and you can see him taking longer shifts and holding on to the puck more and more. he is finding his way and is about to break out.

he was the leader of his BC team. that is no small (no pun intended) task. That is a major hockey program -- by any standard. he is a legend there. he is dominating the AHL.

martin st. louis, another college player (had 3 goals in 56 games to start his career), took a few seasons of pro hockey to get used to the flow and speed. gerbe has all the tools -- he will be a solid pro.

if you have to knit pick -- he needs to getting stronger on his stick. he is getting manhandled along the wall in the defensive zone -- on his wing. he also needs to relax a little bit. he is too fast with the puck and a little jumpy. with the poor talent around him -- he is rushing things and scared or a mistake as opposed to attacking with confidence and passion.

if i was ruff, i would have gerbe play between mancari ( you all know that i believe this guy is a difference maker) and kaleta. a KID line can have a great inpact on a club emotionally. mair should be sat.
