BamBam Posted February 14, 2009 Report Posted February 14, 2009 Quick Hits for your morning... The Penguins are getting very serious about acquiring a winger and it looks to be down to Erik Cole as the frontrunner. At least that according to three sources. Also hearing Gaborik and Prucha. The Habs are closing in that minor deal to set up a major deal according to some sources and the player heading to Montreal is a defenseman. The Canucks have interest in Mark Recchi, Dominic Moore and Tim Connolly. The Kaberle stuff with Buffalo gains nothing but momentum. (Real Meaning...The two sides have never talked) Eck's Site ---So Lets see.. I guess Kaberle could be paired up with JBo on our blue-line, and then we could throw a line of Jokinen, Cole, and Antropov out there....Followed by Boby Crosby, Kesler, etc...etc...etc Again...according to "Eck" these deals are just minutes from taking place! RIGHT!

tom webster Posted February 14, 2009 Report Posted February 14, 2009 While I don't put much stock in Eck, Kaberle to Buffalo is something that could happen if Buffalo were to consider trading their 1st this year and a top prospect or two. Buffalo will definitely be on his list of teams that he would waive his no trade clause for and he would be a huge addition with a reasonable contract.

The question is...would Darcy be willing to pull the trigger. Also, before anyone replies with offers of Paille, MacArthur, Zagrapan, Hunter, Funk or Mancari, top prospects would be defined as Kennedy, Gerbe, Butler, Myers, Ennis, Weber, etc...

And I think Darcy would, especially because the remaining contract is what they felt comfortable paying Campbell.
nfreeman Posted February 14, 2009 Report Posted February 14, 2009 Well, I feel silly posting in an Eck thread, but I have to say that I have no desire for Kaberle. He's a decent-to-good player, but we don't need another highly-paid, smooth-skating, non-physical defenseman. I'd almost go so far as to say that we don't need another defenseman, period, but of course there is always room for a good player. Bottom line though is that I don't expect us to bring in more than one expensive player, and I want that player to be a Rivet-type player at the center position (tough, veteran, productive, leader, etc.).

Couldn't disagree more. Kaberle is a tempo changing, minutes eating, power play point playing number one defensemen that this team needs as much as anything short of a true number one center. He would be a huge upgrade over Spacek and Tallinder and wouldn't be surprised to see both of them gone at the deadline if they could acquire a true number one d-man to team with Rivet. There isn't an elite team out there that doesn't have this type of defenseman.
BamBam Posted February 14, 2009 Author Report Posted February 14, 2009 On some of the local sports shows here in Phoenix, they keep mentioning that the team will be looking to unload some vets because of the financial crisis they are in (Jokinen, Jovo, Morris, and now they have even mentioned Doan if the return package is right). According to some of these local shows, the Sabres have inquired about Derek Morris. I seem to recall his name always coming up with the sabres in the same way that Eric Daze used to with the blackhawks. What is it with former Flames defensman that the sabres like? Lydman...Now interest in Morris, and Leopold? If I had a choice between Morris and Kaberle, I think I'd take Kaberle. I believe Morris is a year or two older.
carpandean Posted February 14, 2009 Report Posted February 14, 2009 If I had a choice between Morris and Kaberle, I think I'd take Kaberle. I believe Morris is a year or two older. I don't know if age is as much of a consideration as the type of players they are. Kaberle is an average size, left-handed, puck-moving (offensive) defenseman, while Morris is bigger (23 lbs over Kaberle), more physical, right-handed and relatively defensive. Morris would help balance our defense. Edit: Morris is a FA at the end of the year, while Kaberle is under contract for two more years at $4.25 million. Edit 2: Kaberle is 30, while Morris is 29.

Have to agree with this, and he would be a great fit for Buffalo. Not sure if I would call him a true number 1....but I could see Kaberle and a slightly more seasoned Sekera giving teams absolute fits.

Well, if the proposal includes unloading Tallinder and another overpaid Sabre, fine, but if not, I don't want us to blow what little budget room we have on him. I think we have a greater need at center. And although I think he's been decent-to-good on a lousy Leafs team forever, there are quite a few #1 defensemen in the NHL I'd rather have (most of whom, admittedly, are more expensive) than him. And now we've all wasted time debating an Eck rumor.
BamBam Posted February 14, 2009 Author Report Posted February 14, 2009 I can't see DR dealing with Toronto. Just not his style. Darcy deals with west coast teams most of the time right? Now you add Brian Burke to the equation...I doubt he is going to let someone get over on him in a trade.

Or, it could have been Garret Morris. I get the two confused.

I haven't listened to much sports radio in the past month or so and usually listen to 910 am when I do listen, have never heard local sources talking about it. Not trying to be an ass, really wondering where you heard local media talking along those lines.

I'm like you and usally go back and forth between 910 and 620, but I heard these rumors on 1060 with Russ Bliss I believe his name is. Every once in awhile he'll run down 20 some topics to start his show and he has mentioned the rumors.

I wasn't too concerned while the Yotes were firmly in a playoff spot but right about now I don't know what they will do. I still don't see Doan being available or going anywhere (NMC in his contract) but at this point I can see some of the others as being possible trades - although I would still be a bit surprised by it.
X. Benedict Posted February 15, 2009 Report Posted February 15, 2009 My only serious trade concern is who will overpay for Keith Tkachuk this year. The dude is like a human yo-yo with the finger loop around the Gateway Arch.

nfreeman Posted February 18, 2009 Report Posted February 18, 2009 Stick a fork in this one. Burke said last night on VS that they aren't trading him.
wjag Posted February 18, 2009 Report Posted February 18, 2009 Stick a fork in this one. Burke said last night on VS that they aren't trading him. He was pretty clear about that. Said he'd have to replace him and didn't think he could find similar ability at market price.
shrader Posted February 18, 2009 Report Posted February 18, 2009 Stick a fork in this one. Burke said last night on VS that they aren't trading him. And with those kind of comments, the asking price for Kaberle just went up a bit.
wjag Posted February 18, 2009 Report Posted February 18, 2009 And with those kind of comments, the asking price for Kaberle just went up a bit. Chris Simpson did push him further and he said everyone was for sale. One has to wonder whose idea the interview was?
2ForTripping Posted February 18, 2009 Report Posted February 18, 2009 Chris Simpson did push him further and he said everyone was for sale. One has to wonder whose idea the interview was? No, he said on deadline day he usually has little movement, BUT this year he expects to be busy. Don't recall any outlandish statement about everyone being for sale. The only outlandish statement he made was 10 first rounders for Schenn.
