tom webster Posted February 10, 2009 Report Posted February 10, 2009 They will try to get a deal but if his agent is smart, he won't sign with the Sabres and wait for another team to offer more money. Just like Vanek. I know some would have finished the statement with "ala Vanek", but I really hate that word!! Given the fact that there have only been like 4 offer sheets in 3 years, that teams are being warned of impending cap doom, the fact that most of the big spenders have their top forwards locked into long term deals and the fact that anything over $2.5 million will result in first round picks, I'd be surprised if Stafford garnered the expected interest. 4 years at around $10 million with the backend loaded sounds about right to me but it wouldn't surprise me to see Buffalo try and get him to sign for only 2 years at less then $5 million and challenge him to find a better deal.

This off-season will be interesting as we see how teams handle the possibility the cap will go down. You're right. Stafford should get $2.5M per year at the most.

Vanek > Stafford As for Horton, save Vanek/Stafford/Roy/Miller/Butler and let the Panthers choose 2 players and a #1. (Pommers, Sekera and a numero uno?) Done!
apuszczalowski Posted February 11, 2009 Report Posted February 11, 2009 Pair him up with Ellis, and Paille and you have an all Welland Line! Try to get Girardi from the Rangers and they are only short one defencemen from having all the players (besides goalie) from the same home town, 30 minutes from Buffalo
deluca67 Posted February 11, 2009 Report Posted February 11, 2009 Way more than what you are suggesting. Clarke and Jochen are garbage. It would take someone like Butler, Stafford or Sekera. Good young players, not locked into big $$ deals. How about Connolly, Stafford, Mancari and a #1?
BamBam Posted February 11, 2009 Report Posted February 11, 2009 How about Connolly, Stafford, Mancari and a #1? Don't you think with Horton's big contract that it would take someone like a Pommer or Roy being apart of the deal? Other teams don't want Jochen and Clarke.
inkman Posted February 11, 2009 Report Posted February 11, 2009 How about Connolly, Stafford, Mancari and a #1? Florida isn't going anywhere this year, why would they want an upcoming UFA like Connolly? Don't you think with Horton's big contract that it would take someone like a Pommer or Roy being apart of the deal?Other teams don't want Jochen and Clarke. As I understand it, Florida wants to unload payroll, not swap it.
