Bigthuder1636 Posted February 10, 2009 Report Posted February 10, 2009 I still think that Buffalo needs skill and depth down the middle. This would be a great guy to bring in. He would help this year, he is signed for the next 4 years at about 4 mill a year which isnt bad. I dont know what hte Panthers are looking for in return but I think we might be able to swing a deal for him without giving up too much. Here is the text of the report. "Florida appears ready to trade C Nathan Horton, according to the New York Post. The Ottawa Sun previously reported the Panthers had been trying to trade Horton, 23, who is in the second year of a six-year, $24M contract. The Sun also said LW Rostislav Olesz and C Brett McLean could be obtained for a draft pick." I would post the link but it is from an ESPN Insider page so not all would be able to see it. If you want to see it just go to the ESPN NHL page and its under rumors.

Guest Sloth Posted February 10, 2009 Report Posted February 10, 2009 I wonder what Darcy would be willing to give up. Possibly a vet, one of the Portland boys and a draft pick?
Bigthuder1636 Posted February 10, 2009 Author Report Posted February 10, 2009 I would be willing to deal McArthur or Hecht plus a prospect or a pick for him. I think we would be fine if we traded a winger because we desperately need C help in my opinion
stenbaro Posted February 10, 2009 Report Posted February 10, 2009 Horton can play center along with RW..He would be a great addition to the Sabres...He can in essence replace Connolys spot next year if needed.. :wallbash: Too bad it wont happen Darcy wont make a deal...
james duncan Posted February 10, 2009 Report Posted February 10, 2009 If I am the Florida GM, I'm not making a deal with a team that is within striking distance for the playoffs (like Bflo) unless I absolutely get the better of the deal.
Bigthuder1636 Posted February 10, 2009 Author Report Posted February 10, 2009 I would agree with you but who knows where either team will be by the trade deadline. What I mean is that if Buffalo continues to climb they might not be the team that Florida is trying to beat for the 7 or 8 spot. And who knows what the Panthers would get for the Sabres for him anyways.

Way more than what you are suggesting. Clarke and Jochen are garbage. It would take someone like Butler, Stafford or Sekera. Good young players, not locked into big $$ deals.

spndnchz Posted February 10, 2009 Report Posted February 10, 2009 Horton could work. Max, Ales, Mancari. They need right wingers.
Bigthuder1636 Posted February 10, 2009 Author Report Posted February 10, 2009 I dont know what they will want but if they are looking to move him that means they are negotiating for a little bit weaker position such that they might be command nor get top dollar so to speak.
nfreeman Posted February 10, 2009 Report Posted February 10, 2009 Someone please smother this BS rumor with a pillow. This is the sum total of the substance behind it: a blurb in a NY Post column by Larry Brooks, who is a complete blowhard: Panthers, seeking help down the middle, appear willing to move Nathan Horton but not David Booth, the winger who is attracting substantial interest around the league. Why in the world would Florida, who is finally turning the corner and becoming a competitive team, trade Horton, who can score, is 23, has good size and is under contract at a reasonable $4MM cap hit? Answer: they wouldn't. It ain't happening.

Answer: they wouldn't. It ain't happening. And, as suggested, you don't trade with another team that you are competing with for one of the last playoff spots. Even if there were any merit to the rumor that they are looking to move him, it won't happen with us unless there is a substantial change in the position of the two teams in the next three weeks.

LabattBlue Posted February 10, 2009 Report Posted February 10, 2009 Way more than what you are suggesting. Clarke and Jochen are garbage. It would take someone like Butler, Stafford or Sekera. Good young players, not locked into big $$ deals. Good to see someone is being realistic. A couple of things I noticed about Horton looking at his stats. Before this season he took very few faceoffs. I am not sure if that is because he was playing on the wing or playing center and not taking the draw. This year he is taking a fair number of faceoffs and is sucking big time at slightly under 46%(298 out of 551). I'd gladly give up Stafford + a pick or a prospect for a shot at Horton. I'm not sure how his contract would fit in knowing that the Miller and Pominville contracts kick in next year. You'd probably have to get rid of Hecht in the offseason.

Possible...yes.
tom webster Posted February 10, 2009 Report Posted February 10, 2009 One of the reasons they are looking to trade Horton is that he has not worked out at center and they are desparately in search of a true number one center so that Weis can settle into his true role as a #2 center.

What kind of contract is he likely to sign this offseason?
LabattBlue Posted February 10, 2009 Report Posted February 10, 2009 Stafford? What kind of contract is he likely to sign this offseason? I was referring to how Horton's contract would fit in, not Stafford's. ;)
inkman Posted February 10, 2009 Report Posted February 10, 2009 Stafford? What kind of contract is he likely to sign this offseason? He'll be 25 in October. I'm sure someone a little more versed on the CBA could answer this better but I'll throw out: 3 years 7 million
Cereal Posted February 10, 2009 Report Posted February 10, 2009 I was referring to how Horton's contract would fit in, not Stafford's. ;) Ah yes, I understand. Still, I'm curious what are people's thoughts on Stafford after this season? How much will he be demanding? I'm not the most knowledgeable in the contracts/capspace analysis.

I'm sure someone a little more versed on the CBA could answer this better but I'll throw out: 3 years 7 million I'd say UR about right. Can't pull a number out my ars, but he's restricted, meaning we get more picks the more someone offers him, if we don't match. I'd expect him to get money like a Kobasew, Chimera, or Filppula (about same age, stats) 3 years, 8 million, or 5 years 15mill. roughly but not Lupul or Prospal money. (3.5-4's)
Bigthuder1636 Posted February 10, 2009 Author Report Posted February 10, 2009 If Stafford keeps his play up for the rest of the season, and finishes with say 25 goals do you think that he will get an offer from other teams or do you think the Sabres will try and get a deal early so that they dont have to make that decision?

They will try to get a deal but if his agent is smart, he won't sign with the Sabres and wait for another team to offer more money. Just like Vanek. I know some would have finished the statement with "ala Vanek", but I really hate that word!!
