carpandean Posted February 8, 2009 Report Posted February 8, 2009 So if Miller had lost the shutout, you would have pulled him -- because of the "risk"?I don't ever remember seeing a goalie pulled under such circumstances. Or when the game is hopelessly lost. Then again, my hockey window is pretty narrow. I rarely watch games not involving the Sabres. At just 5-1 with Lalime as our backup; maybe not. I don't recall offhand what teams they were but I have seen a backup come in for the third period of a blowout (when leading; it happens all the time when trailing.) In that case, it probably isn't as much about risk -- depending on the team that you are playing (i.e., if they are big physical guys that might run a goaltender) -- as it is about (as mentioned by others) resting the starter and getting the backup some play time. With players, the risk of injury due to a hit or an errant puck is higher. A lot of college teams will do that since many dress 3 goalies. If we're up by a lot in a game our coach will usually put in the 3rd stringer rookie to give him some playing time. I guess you could do it in the NHL too if you want your backup to get some ice time if he hasn't been playing a lot lately. Hmm ... who does that sound like? We knew Lalime would be playing shortly after a long time off. Even the Edmonton feed was talking during the intermission about whether you play Lalime in the third with a 7-1 lead. With a six goal lead, you could always pull Lalime should he let in a couple quick, leaving Miller with a four goal lead. Certainly, at 9-1 with over seven minutes left, they should have considered it.
X. Benedict Posted February 8, 2009 Report Posted February 8, 2009 The fact that Cherry was on the wrong end of Darryl Sittler's big night back exactly 33 years to the day of that particular HNIC CC's MIGHT have something to do w/ his opinion on this issue. Nice point. I guess they should also get rid of goal-differential as a tie-break....it should be the team whose stars have the least average ice time in wins. ;)

Gee Gary, the Isles and Pens are tied for 8th with 88 points each. Well, in W's, the Isles top 3 players were on the ice for 27 minutes/game each and the Pens top 3 were on the ice for 23 each, but because there are no stars ON the Isles, TIE BREAK Is-land-ers!
