matter2003 Posted January 29, 2009 Report Posted January 29, 2009 I swear if I heard him say "THA RHEE- Bound" one more time I would have strangled someone...I kept wishing the game would go faster so I didn't have to listen to him talk anymore, or at least hope that Harry Neale would continue talking to take airtime away from him. Usually I wish Harry would just shut up when Rick is there, but this Kielback is just awful---I was reading a few other sites where people are saying he has to be the worst announcer they have ever heard and I couldn't help but laugh...How he had a job for 28 years annoying TV and radio listeners alike is beyond me---personally I would have thought it really funny if they had him doing the Coyotes game so he could go back to the building where he got fired from and announce for the visiting team.... anyway, I am so glad I don't have to listen to this guy for another year I can't even explain it...I am sure Paul Hamilton's drone like announcing and Kevin Sylvester's talk about everything but the game announcing like they do in NHL 2008 is going to be better....
deluca67 Posted January 29, 2009 Report Posted January 29, 2009 I thought he sounded really good from what I heard. He concentrated more on the game than getting into conversations with Neale. You actually knew what was going on. I think RJ spends too much time waiting for his next big call. Keep RJ on TV, it would be great to a CK on radio. He seems to be in tune and much more descriptive.
inkman Posted January 29, 2009 Report Posted January 29, 2009 I swear if I heard him say "THA RHEE- Bound" one more time... He sounded like the Swedish Chef. Listening to the home team's announcers the last few days, I realize what in depth analysis you can get from the announcers. I love RJ but he and Neale offer no insight like the stuff I've been getting the last two games.

I too am a big RJ fan, however I agree the last 2 games have been downright enjoyable to listen to..I could see the play thorugh my the radio..I actually yelled yaaaaaah when connoly scored last night ,the way it was described and how it was lead up to a the point of the goal was downright beautiful..
Foligno's Nose Posted January 30, 2009 Report Posted January 30, 2009 Kielback was more than sufficient. Anything other than RJ is going to be weird. We are spoiled. No doubt about it.

Curt was fairly solid, and I have to give him credit. I am definetly expecting a high level of crapitude over the next two games though. Another note, I watched many of the Voices series on the NHL network and it seemed to me that other pbp guys in the business do much more leg work before the games. I think RJ even had a comment like "I go in cold, it works out better that way". Maybe it's the experience he's got under his belt, but it could also explain the lack of insight.

I found the last few games kind of refreshing. I almost consider Rick to be a family member, and sometimes you just need a break even from a loved one. As for "commentators" being prepared, I like Rick's approach. Some of these guys, and some of these broadcast, present WAY too much info. Not only the voices, but the graphics on the screen. It's information overload. I don't mind the breaks in the action being uneventful. Everyone take a breath already.
wjag Posted February 1, 2009 Report Posted February 1, 2009 I have some basic requirements I need from a broadcast: 1. Pronounce players names correctly. 2. Tell me who got the penalty as soon as you figure it out. 3. Call all goals with enthusiasm for both teams. 4. Show the camera angle above the goal on all goals (provided it exists) 5. Tell me when a team loses a player to the lockerroom or injury 6. HD What I would like to see is more camera angles from behind the goal... You see so much more of the play, but they only give you a few seconds of it.
jwcolour Posted February 1, 2009 Report Posted February 1, 2009 Edit: thought i was in Game Day thread not here... Nothing to say on this.

I am with you, esp. on your first point - I cannot believe how many times I have watched an away broadcast and they buthcher the Sabres' names (i.e., Gaustad, Kotalik, Sekera) - you would think this would be the first thing an opposing teams' broadcast crew would review before a game - but no. Shows their lack of preparation & preparation. But then again, we have Sylvester with his comical "PhilaDOLPHIA"......atrocious....

PromoTheRobot Posted February 1, 2009 Report Posted February 1, 2009 I did not hear CK but I did hear Paul Hamilton's call of the Coyote game, and I thought he was surprisingly good. First off, he sounded awake, unlike his reports on WGR where he sounds like he was just woke up from a coma. In fact I had no idea it even was Hamilton until someone said his name. He sounded that different. Frankly it sounds like he enjoys PBP more. He should be a candidate to succeed RJ. PTR

Away games are just more annoying because they pronounce our guys' names wrong.
