BamBam Posted January 23, 2009 Author Report Posted January 23, 2009 The last blockbuster deal we did was LaFontaine and how many years ago was that? Darcy has always said that we would never make a trade from a position of weakness. Teams are sniffing around the sabres right now like a cheap bottle of hooch since we are down 3 d-man. If Darcy is who we think he is....then he won't trade at this time.

Patty16 Posted January 23, 2009 Report Posted January 23, 2009 Good call. When was the last time Darcy traded in a position of weakness besides Hasek and Peca? It almost never works out well. Max is hurt and a FA in june. why would anyone trade for him regardless
BamBam Posted January 24, 2009 Author Report Posted January 24, 2009 Good call. When was the last time Darcy traded in a position of weakness besides Hasek and Peca? It almost never works out well. Exactly.. What did that net us? Kozlov, Pyatt, and Timmy C.... Egh? We got hosed on those two deals.
bottlecap Posted January 24, 2009 Report Posted January 24, 2009 here's my late-breaking hunch. Just a hunch but I think Atlanta is trying to move Kovalchuk. I heard Peter Mahavolich, who's now a scout for Atlanta being interviewed at length and speak glowingly of Nathan Gerbe. Would you give up a Gerbe in a package for Kovalchuk? Would be nice to move 2-3 other players who've been just stuck for one really great one.

If Kovalchuk is available you might want to try to move Roy or Pominville as well and sign Kovalchuk to a long term deal. The problem would be not having any money left to sign a center which this team desperately needs.

The problem would be not having any money left to sign a center which this team desperately needs. If you moved Roy, then you'd need two centers and I doubt you'd find one as prolific as he is for such a reasonable cap hit. Also, I don't think Sekera is going anywhere.

Also, I don't think Sekera is going anywhere. I wouldn't move Sekera or Roy either. I was speaking in the context of a Kovalchuk deal only. I am at this point under the belief that there is not one player available that can make this team a Cup contender. This team has too many holes and is carrying too much dead weight. The more I think about it the more I can see the Sabres feeling the same way. I think they will make a minor deal or two at the deadline to make a push for the playoffs. I can't imagine they se themselves as a threat to the Cup. The went up against Detroit and Chicago and got a dose of reality.
blugold43 Posted January 26, 2009 Report Posted January 26, 2009 I'm guessing since we know Sabres fans are one of the most passionate groups; by him always mentioning the Sabres in his rumors he gets a lot of Sabres fans going to his site - even if just to see how idiotic the rumors are. That profit. your theory makes way more sense than any of his rumors.
deluca67 Posted January 26, 2009 Report Posted January 26, 2009 your theory makes way more sense than any of his rumors. Isn't that the same reason that Penguin/Sabre games seem to always be on VS.? I think it also had a hand in deciding last years Winter Classic match-up.
carpandean Posted January 27, 2009 Report Posted January 27, 2009 Another to file under "Not Gonna Happen": Julie and I are at the Montreal Airport and will be doing a special Podcast with thoughts on the All-Star Weekend and second half of the season...I will also be addressing some rumours that have come up including Bobby Ryan to Buffalo, Vinny Lecavalier and more on Jay Bouwmeester. http://www.hockeybuzz.com/blog.php?blogger_id=1 (Ryan)
SabreInFla Posted January 27, 2009 Report Posted January 27, 2009 Another to file under "Not Gonna Happen": http://www.hockeybuzz.com/blog.php?blogger_id=1 (Ryan) I had never even heard of Bobby Ryan until I just looked him up.
deluca67 Posted January 27, 2009 Report Posted January 27, 2009 Another to file under "Not Gonna Happen": http://www.hockeybuzz.com/blog.php?blogger_id=1 (Ryan) Why would the Sabres add another Right Wing? The Sabres need a center and a defenseman not another Right Wing.
carpandean Posted January 27, 2009 Report Posted January 27, 2009 I had never even heard of Bobby Ryan until I just looked him up. That's because he was drafted after Crosby (right after, #2 overall), so naturally you couldn't hear him being called over all of the Crosby talk. I was certain that Crosby was the only player drafted in 2005 ...
RayFinkle Posted January 27, 2009 Report Posted January 27, 2009 I had never even heard of Bobby Ryan until I just looked him up. FROM BOBBY RYAN BIO:Flaws: Is not an overly physical player, despite his size. Could stand to shoot the puck more often. Needs more work on his play without the puck. Sounds like a future Sabre to me!
carpandean Posted January 27, 2009 Report Posted January 27, 2009 Sounds like a future Sabre to me! 31 GP, 15 G, 15 A, 30 P, +11 ... we could use a few more Sabres like that ... No way that this deal happens, but it won't be because the Sabres couldn't use him.
BamBam Posted January 27, 2009 Author Report Posted January 27, 2009 I had never even heard of Bobby Ryan until I just looked him up. I have to agree... I never once heard this guys name ever mentioned. This is why you just need to laugh at Eck's stuff. Last week the rumor was a "BLOCKBUSTER" with the ducks. I'm sorry....but Bobby Ryan....Who? is not a blockbuster deal.
will Posted January 27, 2009 Report Posted January 27, 2009 Sounds like a future Sabre to me! especially the part in his profile that states he's not an overly physical player (even though he has good size).
LabattBlue Posted January 27, 2009 Report Posted January 27, 2009 especially the part in his profile that states he's not an overly physical player (even though he has good size). Sounds like a Regier type of player. Maybe Ek is on to something.

Last week the rumor was a "BLOCKBUSTER" with the ducks. I'm sorry....but Bobby Ryan....Who? is not a blockbuster deal. I saw him play in a game in Owen Sound a few years back. He absolutely owned the ice. If I remember correctly, he has the skills but not the maturity. He seems like he'd fit in great with the Sabres. :death:
carpandean Posted January 27, 2009 Report Posted January 27, 2009 I have to agree... I never once heard this guys name ever mentioned. This is why you just need to laugh at Eck's stuff. Last week the rumor was a "BLOCKBUSTER" with the ducks. I'm sorry....but Bobby Ryan....Who? is not a blockbuster deal. He's the Ducks' #1 prospect, is getting his first real taste of the bigs right now and making the most of it. In 31 games, 16 less than our top three scorers (points), he would be fourth on the Sabres in points and third in goals. It wouldn't be a blockbuster in terms of bringing in a huge name with a proven playoff record, but it would be a blockbuster in terms of bringing in a huge prospect that is already, as a 21 year old rookie, producing as much as our top scorers. That is exactly why Anaheim wouldn't give him up. They have a huge number of FAs this summer and Ryan has one more year on his entry contract. They would be foolish to give him up for anything short of one of our big guns. If you haven't heard of him, it's because for three reasons: (1) as I said, he was drafted #2 behind Crosby; (2) he's a WC team prospect; and (3) he started the season in the AHL because of Anaheim's serious cap problem. Just remember that Vanek isn't overly physical either, but would you take another on of him on the right wing for the next season and a half at $1.922 million, including $1.1 million in performance bonuses that are only paid if he meets them? Again, it won't happen, but not because we couldn't use him.
carpandean Posted January 27, 2009 Report Posted January 27, 2009 For what it's worth (i.e., *in best Dark Helmet voice* ABSOLUTELY NOTHING!): The Sabres are looking to make a big deal, and Bobby Ryan is a definite possibility. A source has told me that a deal that would include Drew Stafford and a premier prospect is being considered. The Maple Leafs also have serious interest in Ryan. http://www.hockeybuzz.com/blog.php?blogger_id=1

Does Ryan play with Getzlaf and if so, how much of Ryan's early season success is because of playing with a true #1 center?
NUeagles2011 Posted January 27, 2009 Report Posted January 27, 2009 Bobby Ryan was drafted the same year as Crosby. He was eather the second pick or third if I recall. I would like to see him in Buffalo. Class guy, he and I are both from South Jersey and he comes home to play street hockey with the kids every once and a while. Prospect T.J. Brennan is a SJ boy too and I think he and Ryan plaied youth hockey together.
Two or less Posted January 27, 2009 Report Posted January 27, 2009 I have to agree... I never once heard this guys name ever mentioned. This is why you just need to laugh at Eck's stuff. Last week the rumor was a "BLOCKBUSTER" with the ducks. I'm sorry....but Bobby Ryan....Who? is not a blockbuster deal. If the Sabres got Bobby Ryan in any type of deal, that would be a huge blockbuster deal. Bobby Ryan is a rising star in the NHL, a premier power forward already in his rookie season. Bobby Ryan is going to be a star for years to come in this league. This rumour is stupid because no way the Ducks would trade Ryan and i'm sure every single NHL team out there would be interested in Ryan.
