tom webster Posted January 20, 2009 Report Posted January 20, 2009 McDonald was incredible for the Ducks during their Cup run. He was the Conn Smyth winner IMO. And for a little guy he is a 60% guy on draaws. So he fits the cup winning, faceoff guy. For a pivot however, he is smurfy. The Ducks won with him because they had huge wingers to skate with him (Penner, Getz, and all the other 6'3, 220 guys that club has). In Buffalo I fear a long series where he gets pounded out there. Any deal has to bring in size for the 20+ games they would have to win. No smurfs allowed. More rugged bangers with 10-15 yrs experience are needed. MacCarthur is too much like McDonald in Regier's eyes. Better off to add size and layers to the 3rd and 4th lines with Guerin types. Look at San Jose who added Claude Lemieux to their lineup today. Size and grit...wins Cups. Another guy to go after would be Fredrick Modin who is finally healthy. He is a load like Franzen -- for the Wings. When he plays hard, he is a top power forward. Again, Columbus isn't selling. They are fighting for their playoff spot ever.
deluca67 Posted January 20, 2009 Report Posted January 20, 2009 Get a player that can be here for a while. How about making an offer to the Kings for Anze Kopitar. Maybe Pominville and a prospect could get a deal done. Maybe even target a Brad Boyes.

Even Jack Edwards made me laugh yesterday (crazy, I know) when he said "Charra crushes Boyes". Is it too much to ask that Boyes could change his middle name to "Likes"?

Am I the only one that would forego a playoff run this year in order to challenge for the cup in 2 years? And BTW, I have officially decided Pominville is my new whipping boy. I can no longer take watching him skate along the boards and throw a terrible slapshot from just inside the blue line. :death:
Rico7 Posted January 20, 2009 Report Posted January 20, 2009 what we need is a butch goring down the stretch. You nailed it.

I can't, for the life of me, imagine why a rebuilding team would give up a huge 20-year-old that projects to be a first-line center and already has one 30-goal season. I would guess that it would take more than a slumping winger with big contract about to kick in and any one of our prospects. It's a nice thought and if Darcy found a way to bring him in, I'd be ecstatic, but I just don't see them giving him up. There are for more likely to move Handzus or Stoll. Both, while big, are older and have less offensive upside.

These kind of suggestions will always come up no matter how unrealistic they are.

Target a #1 center and make it the teams #1 priority to get a deal done.

Neo Posted January 21, 2009 Report Posted January 21, 2009 what we need is a butch goring down the stretch. You beat me to the POST ... Goring .... the best deadline deal ever.
Foligno's Nose Posted January 21, 2009 Report Posted January 21, 2009 You beat me to the POST ... Goring .... the best deadline deal ever. Yes. March 10, 1980: Butch Goring traded from Los Angeles to NY Islanders for Billy Harris and Dave Lewis. Who else makes the list for deadline deal successes? Immediate returns: March 4, 1991: Ron Francis, Grant Jennings and Ulf Samuelsson traded from Hartford to Pittsburgh for John Cullen, Jeff Parker and Zarley Zalapski. March 21, 1994: Tony Amonte and the rights to Matt Oates traded from NY Rangers to Chicago for Stephane Matteau and Brian Noonan. Honorable mentions: March 23, 1999 - Buffalo Sabres obtained a fifth-round pick G Ryan Miller and D Rhett Warrener from Florida Panthers for D Mike Wilson March 10, 2000 ? Buffalo Sabres obtain Doug Gilmour, J. P. Dumont and a conditional draft pick in 2001 or 2002 from the Chicago Blackhawks for Michal Grosek. - FLEECING!!! Home town deals: March 9, 2004: Washington traded RW Mike Grier to Buffalo for C Jakub Klepis. March 13, 2001: Columbus traded RW Steve Heinze to Buffalo for Buffalo's 3rd-round pick in the 2001 Entry Draft. March 18, 1997: LW Miroslav ?atan traded from Edmonton to Buffalo for LW Barrie Moore and D Craig Millar. March 9, 1992: Wayne Presley traded from San Jose to Buffalo for Dave Snuggerud. March 10, 1992: Dave Hannan traded from Toronto to Buffalo for future considerations. Hannan and Presley on the PK were worth the price of admission back then.

Not sure why you mentioned Kopitar and honestly don't care enough to look back, but if Sabres and Kings strike a deal, i hope it's for Patrick O'Sullivan. I just love his game. He's been playing LW though but has played C in the past. O'Sullivan and Vanek would be scary good!

Hawerchuk Posted January 22, 2009 Report Posted January 22, 2009 6' 3" 220 and $3 million cheaper than O'Sullivan with better offensive numbers. I'd welcome either one of these players from LA (Anze or Sully). Dustin Brown too while we're at it. But the Kings won't give him up. What about Frolov from LA?? Is he a center (too lazy to search it right now)?
Two or less Posted January 22, 2009 Report Posted January 22, 2009 6' 3" 220 and $3 million cheaper than O'Sullivan with better offensive numbers. Kopitar makes $6.8 million next year, 10/11 and 11/12. He does have much much much better numbers then O'Sullivan and that's why LA wouldn't trade him.

As much as i love his scoring touch, i am not sure he would fit well in Buffalo. I've heard many say he's really soft and a huge liability in his own end.

Hawerchuk Posted January 23, 2009 Report Posted January 23, 2009 http://www.cbssports.com/nhl/story/11286085/rss Link to the most recent update on available players. Bouwmeester would be nice! ;)
Hawerchuk Posted January 23, 2009 Report Posted January 23, 2009 What about these two? Do you think they could have any positive impact with the Sabres? Too steep for "Chuck" at $4mil??? Keith Tkachuk: The Blues' veteran left wing had a rental experience with Atlanta two years ago that was a bust, but at age 36 he is in better shape and having a productive offensive season on the worst team in the West. Tkachuk is unrestricted after the season, but in the meantime, he brings experience, the ability to get to the front of the net and to score on the power play, where he is tied for sixth in goals. His cap hit for the season is $4 million. Nik Antropov: Antropov is the kind of center teams normally salivate over because he's so big and has shown a scoring touch at different times in his career. But for the most part, the 29-year-old Russian has never quite lived up to expectations in Toronto. The Maple Leafs aren't going to make the playoffs this season, and since Antropov will be an unrestricted free agent, he'll be available to teams looking to beef up down the middle.
